Ex's Bet on Reconciliation Fails
Chapter 2
Colten Rice was more confident than ever. He had this extraordinary knack for predicting outcomes, and whatever he said seemed to come true. Before he was even born, when his mother Katie was pregnant, his father Donald Rice was deceived by friends and went bankrupt. With the little money he had left, he went to Las Vegas to try his luck. Just as he received the news that Katie had given birth, he hit the jackpot. Overcome with emotion, Donald wept and declared that Colten was his lucky charm. With those winnings, he rebuilt his fortune.
When I first met Colten, I was sitting on the sidewalk, crying my eyes out. My dad had become infatuated with another woman, as if bewitched. Not only did he want to divorce my mom, but he also used underhanded tactics to leave her destitute. My mom loved him deeply, which led to her severe depression. I tried pleading with my dad to remember their past and not destroy us completely, but he coldly pushed me to the ground.
Colten extended his hand and said, "A fortune teller once told me I'm like a walking good luck charm. Take my hand, and you'll find fortune. Betrayers soon face their karma." Amazingly, his words came true. Just two days later, my dad died in a car accident. His pregnant mistress lost the baby due to shock. My mom and I became the sole heirs to my dad’s estate. She even took legal action and reclaimed the assets he had given to his mistress. At that moment, I saw Colten as a guardian angel.
He would later gently ruffle my hair and say with a smile, "Melina, stick with me, and you'll live a life of peace and prosperity." I became his constant companion. I went everywhere he did. His many friends all wanted to bask in his supposed good fortune. Colten referred to me as his sister, and his friends treated me like family.
I had to admit, Colten’s presence was a beacon during my turbulent adolescence. From then on, there were no more fights around me, no more disillusionment, and no more fear of being left behind. At the age of 20, Colten and I got engaged. Donald and Katie were thrilled with me. My mom hired a professional manager to run my dad's company and, with her sharp investment skills, kept our family assets firmly among the city's elite. Being an only child, the future inheritance was all mine.
