Chapter 4

"Take a seat, Elena Sofia Valenti."

The surname struck harder than the crash. I stopped halfway across the concrete floor of the Indiana safe house.

"My name is Elena."

"Not tonight," Miriam replied.

My lawyer stood beside the only barred window. Her courtroom blazer was gone, replaced by a dark trench coat and a holstered pistol. She set an iron lockbox on the steel table.

I dropped my overnight bag onto the linoleum. My shoulder still throbbed from the highway ambush. The torn silk at my collar hung open where Luca had ripped away the Rizzo crest.

"Bianca's men tried to run my cab into a ditch," I said. "Dante gave me a deadline and a bullet. That marriage is over."

"Is it?"

"I crossed the state line."

Miriam rested one hand on the lockbox. "You called the number behind the wax seal. That means you are invoking the Valenti blood marker."

"I am asking for protection, not another cage."

"The Valenti family does not deal in half-measures."

"Then they can learn." I pointed at the box. "I will not pledge myself to a syndicate I have not seen in twenty-six years."

Miriam studied me without sympathy. I did not want any.

She opened the box and slid a faded photograph across the table. A young woman with dark eyes and sharp cheekbones stared up at me.

My mother.

"Arturo is dead," Miriam said.

"I do not know who that is."

"Your uncle. He held the New York seat after Isabella disappeared." Miriam tapped the photograph. "Five capos control the territory now. Blood alone will not make them kneel. You need the succession documents, the trust codes, and enough support to survive the first vote."

"Good. I am not asking for a crown."

I reached into my bag, pulled out the scratched titanium signature key, and set it beside my mother's picture.

"Have this independently examined. Someone copied my authorization through a physical terminal. I also want the truth about Isabella. Did she leave willingly, or did your people drive her out?"

Miriam glanced at the damaged casing. "You want to clear your name in Chicago before you claim New York."

"I want facts before I make another decision that can get me killed."

"A jet is waiting at Gary Regional. We can be in New York before dawn. You present yourself to the capos and demand the seat."

"No."

Her eyebrow lifted.

"I will not arrive as Dante Rizzo's discarded wife begging strangers for soldiers," I said. "That makes me a liability, not a leader."

Miriam paced toward the window. "You spent eight years building the Rizzo family. You protected Dante's son. You doubled their territory. How do I know you will not run back the second your husband regrets what he did?"

"Dante does not make mistakes. He makes calculations." I kept my voice level. "He weighed my life against his authority and decided I was expendable. I do not return to ledgers that write me off as a loss."

"And Luca?"

I touched the torn edge of my dress. "He removed the crest himself."

Miriam leaned across the table. "If you plan to borrow Valenti soldiers for revenge, say it now. We will not bleed because a scorned wife wants to punish her husband."

"I left twelve million dollars in Dante's accounts. I revoked my access instead of draining them. If revenge were my goal, Chicago would already be bankrupt."

Her gaze dropped to my hands. They were steady.

"I want the person who forged the manifest," I continued. "I want the people who ordered the highway attack. I do not want every Rizzo foot soldier caught in the blast."

"Taking the jet would still be the fastest move."

"Fast is not the same as smart. Verify the trust. Examine the key. Tell me what happened to my mother. Then I decide whether I want the seat."

Miriam went quiet. Finally, she drew a thick envelope from the lockbox. A red wax seal stamped with a V closed the flap.

"Forty-eight hours," she said. "You get two days of Valenti protection here. After that, the capos will decide whether you are an heir or a problem."

"Which capos oppose me?"

"Rocco and Silas. They control the ports and the union contracts. They back an internal successor who will not question the missing inventory from Arturo's final years."

"And the other three?"

"Leo controls collections and internal discipline. He respected your mother, but he will not vote from nostalgia. Victor oversees security contracts. He supports whoever keeps his crews paid. Dominic Marinelli holds the transport seat and has avoided every succession meeting since Arturo became ill."

"Avoided, or disappeared?"

Miriam's expression tightened. "That is one of the questions waiting in New York. His office continues issuing routine approvals, but no one outside his personal staff has seen him in six days."

I looked at the scratched signature key. An absent transport capo, missing inventory, and a forged route built from old Valenti codes were no longer separate problems. They were pieces of the same board.

"Freeze the archived access logs before anyone hears I am coming," I said.

"I cannot order that without temporary authority."

"Then preserve whatever you can without announcing why. If the records disappear tonight, we learn who was watching."

"So they are stealing from their own house."

"They call it protecting their interests. Your return threatens those interests."

"Let them be threatened. I built Chicago's logistics network from nothing. I can read theirs before they finish lying about it."

"Confidence does not stop bullets."

"Neither does obedience."

Miriam gave a slow nod. Not agreement. Recognition.

She placed the sealed envelope between us. "Arturo wrote a recall directive before his final stroke. We assumed it contained the legal steps for your return."

"Open it."

She took a brass letter opener from the box and cut through the wax. The seal cracked, scattering red fragments across the steel.

Miriam unfolded a single sheet of heavy paper.

There were no trust codes. No succession stamps. No instructions for the capos.

Only one line, written in black ink.

If she is exiled by the Rizzos, investigate our own people first.
