Chapter 1

After getting engaged to Alec, he still kept things hot and heavy with the intern at his company.

Until he brought her back to our home, getting intimate and cozy in our bedroom.

Daisy the intern asked pitifully, "CEO, if your wife finds out, won't she be angry?"

His tone was utterly indifferent: "Even if I lose her, it's no great loss."

This time, I didn't linger. I swiftly packed my things and hopped into his uncle's luxury car to make my getaway.

Later, he found me in a frenzy, begging me to come back to him.

But I touched my belly, smiling tenderly:

"I'm sorry, but my morning sickness has been awful lately. I'm afraid I can't go back with you.

"Why don't you come say hello to your uncle instead?"

He broke down on the spot.

I sat alone on the empty living room couch, clutching my phone tightly. The familiar number kept flashing on the screen over and over.

But there was no answer from the other end, as if mocking my hopes and disappointments.

I tried to reassure myself that maybe he was just too busy to notice my call.

But today, we had just gotten engaged. Why did I have to endure such cold treatment? With tears shamefully sliding down the back of my hand, my heart felt like it was being torn apart.

I had always believed that once I got engaged to Alec, everything would get better.

During college, my friends repeatedly warned me, saying Alec wasn't truly sincere towards me and didn't know how to respect me.

But I was in the prime of my youth, filled with endless passion and devotion for love. How could I easily believe what others said? Wherever he was, my shadow would surely be right by his side.

They mocked me as a lowly pursuer, but I didn't care.

Whenever someone asked why I was so obsessed with him, I would just smile faintly, hiding in my heart that sun-drenched afternoon, that image that illuminated both the boy and the girl's heart.

Doing good things for him unconsciously became a part of my life.

I knew that the only reason he tolerated me by his side was because I strongly resembled his pure love.

After the woman he once deeply loved got married, he held me and cried all night.

After that night, he decided to get engaged to me. I thought he had finally realized I was the one worth cherishing, I thought our days would become beautiful because of this.

However, reality dealt me a merciless blow. Our engagement ceremony was simple and low-key, attended only by a few close friends, our parents, and a handful of relatives. Compared to others' lively celebrations, it felt somewhat quiet and subdued.

He said he didn't like too much commotion, but that wasn't really what I wanted.

Seeing the annoyance flicker across his brow, I swallowed my heart's desires silently.

On the first night after our engagement, he claimed to be swamped with work at the office and didn't spend it with me. We didn't even have dinner together.

The truth was, he spent the entire night with the new intern.

I had naively believed that once we were engaged, he would see the depth of my feelings for him. But now I realize I was wrong, completely wrong.

The phone still goes unanswered. I stare blankly at the teacup in my hand, the now-cold tea as frigid and biting as my current mood.

The light from Alec's office spills through the window into the dark night, while I can only keep a lonely vigil in this quiet home, my heart full of pain and resentment.

The next day, I decided to go to his office myself. On the way, friends I encountered gave me puzzled and sympathetic looks, asking, "Melody, why are you here in person? Where's Alec?"

"Didn't you two just get engaged? How come Alec isn't with you?"I smiled forcefully and replied, "He's very busy. I just came to see him."

The moment I pushed open his office door, I saw Alec intently explaining work to that intern. Their interaction was natural and intimate.

Colleagues around whispered, their eyes filled with surprise and pity.

Hearing my voice, Alec looked up, briefly startled before regaining composure.

"Why are you here?" He stood and walked towards me, his tone so flat it chilled me to the bone.

I took a deep breath, desperately holding back tears as I looked him in the eye, "I want to know, why didn't you come home last night? And you and this intern..."

The intern immediately put on an innocent expression and clarified, "Sister, there's really nothing between us. Please don't misunderstand."
