Chapter 6

AVA

“You good?”

Caleb asked as we waited in line at the cafeteria for our lunch.

I haven't been okay since the new substitute teacher walked in, I've been feeling like something in me was trying to get up from a deep slumber.

“Yeah.” I smiled at him.

“I see you've got eyes on the sub?” He teased.

“No! why would you think such?” my voice came out a little bit sharper

“Well, I saw the way you were staring at him back in class.” He smirked.

“I wasn't staring at him okay, I just have this bad feeling about him.” I clasped my hands together in sincerity. I didn't want to hide the fact that the new sub gives me the chills, but I just had to tell someone and I still had about five more hours before I get home to talk to mom, so I just had to tell Caleb.

“Yeah, he did seemed kinda... different.”

I really need to find out really if it was just my subconscious playing a prank on me or was the New sub really my mate.

“Caleb, I'll be back. I need to check something?” I excused myself from him and ran out without waiting for his reply.

With slow strides, I walked through the hallway leading to his office. I needed to find answers. Arriving at his office, I looked through the keyhole but it was empty. He wasn't in his office.

I shouldn't go in there, it doesn't feel right, right?

“Ofcourse it does." A voice whispered in my head, “We need to know if he truly is our mate.”

“Who the fuck said that?” I whispered but nothing came forth, it must have been my subconscious.

Shakily, I twisted the doorknob and the door gave way. I walked into the office fully.

The smell of books hit my nose. Just like every teacher. But something else caught my nose.

“Basil?”

The sub likes Basil, that's really funny. A slight chuckle escaped my lips as the thought of someone like him, liking Basil lingered in my head.

I walked round his office, checking and touching anything that seemed suspicious. At the edge of the table lay a blue coloured thick file, it seemed weird and my curiosity got the best of me.

I walked over to it, my hands were trembling as I lifted it up. I flipped through the first page, then the second and third but nothing out of the ordinary seemed to be there.

Seems he was just an innocent teacher.

I kept the file back and just as I was about to take a step, I noticed a paper lying on the floor, it must have slipped out of the file. I picked it up and was about to insert it back into the file but yet I just couldn't give up on my suspicions.

...What if it contained my description or details about me, just what if...

“Really?” I voiced out after seeing the contents of the letter.

It was just a regular letter of acceptance by the school. Truly, I was just over thinking.

I held the doorknob, about to twist it when I noticed that one of his desk drawers was opened. I must have opened it while I was searching his office. I hurried back to close it, but then again something sitting comfortable inside the drawer got me.

It was just like the box I had received on my birthday but this time, it was not a box but a letter.

“What paper comes in black?” I furrowed my brows as I picked it up. I was about to open it when I heard his voice, he was approaching. I hurriedly tucked the letter into my shirt. I stood still, no escape route, beads of sweat formed on my forehead, my hands trembling. And just as the door knob twisted...

“Mr Logan.”

Someone called from outside and the door closed back.

“Thank goodness.” I breathed down, placing my hand on my chest as I felt my heart rise and fall.

I heard his retreating footsteps, I needed no one to tell me what to do, I speedily made a run.

LOGAN

I walked out from my hiding spot as I watched her leave my office. A small smile crept on my face. I had perceived her scent when I was walking back from the principal's office.

I walked into my office, observing the surrounding then my eyes fell on my opened drawer.

“Shit.”

I rushed over to it but guess I was too late, she had already taken the letter.

“Very clever of you miss Ava, I suppose it's about time I make it official.” I smirked as I stared at her picture.

“You're mine.”

I fell back on my chair.

After I had turned eighteen, I thought that finding my mate would be so easy, but as time began to pass, I thought I was not meant to have a wolf. But everything changed after I crossed path with Ava on her sixteenth birthday. I had just come out to the human world just to have a little fun when she walked into the club with the same human boy she has always being with. I followed her home and was surprised to find out that her mother was the human who was casted out from the pack.

I had to secretly follow her everywhere she went, untill a few months ago, when I made my intention known to her mother. Seems like I would be paying her a visit soon.

UNKNOWN POV

I waited carefully inside my car, I wanted for her to walk out of the school building. As the students trooped out of the building, I waited patiently. And there she was, walking gracefully as she giggled to what her friend said.

I watched her smile, it was really beautiful.

“We need her!” My wolf, Isaiah stirred like he had just woken up from a deep slumber.

“I know we want her but we just have to take our time. We wouldn't want her getting scared, would we?”

Something or should I say someone else got my attention.

It can't be, what is he doing here.

Logan Moon. What was he doing here?,

I traced his eyes and it was on her, my mate.

I gritted my teeth and huffed out as I whispered

“She is mine”

Brenda’s Second Life Novel Cover

I died during the winter of my fiftieth wedding anniversary. In the ICU, the monitors screamed a relentless, piercing alarm. Through the glass, I saw the man I’d spent half a century with—Gabriel. Once hailed as the most promising engineer at the machinery plant, he now had hair gone stark white. Beside him stood our son, Joseph. A doctor was speaking to them. I read the man’s lips: “…there’s no point anymore.” Gabriel nodded without hesitation. In that moment, I felt no pain, no cold—just a vast, hollow absurdity. I watched him pick up a pen to sign the DNR form. He paused, brow furrowed, as if wrestling with some monumental problem. Finally, with a look of impatience and utter confusion, he turned to our son. “What… what was your mother’s name again?” … What was my name? My name was Brenda. A name he’d never carried in his heart, a name he’d replaced for fifty years with “hey” or “the boy’s mother.” As my soul finally tore free, I saw him—prompted by our son—tremble as he finally wrote those three characters. And beside him, Sophia—the “girl next door” he’d spent a lifetime tending to—gently patted his back in silent comfort. How utterly pathetic. My whole life, I’d kept his house and cooked his meals. I’d abandoned my family’s legacy for him, endured the sneers for marrying beneath my station, borne his children, and kept his home for half a century. And in the end, in his heart, I was nobody. A nameless ghost. If there is a next life… no. I don’t want a next life. Let it all end. Let it be swallowed by this endless dark. The sharp scent of disinfectant flooded my nostrils. I jolted, eyes flying open. Above me hung a mottled, yellowing ceiling; an ancient ceiling fan squeaked in persistent rhythm. This wasn’t the ICU. I sat up sharply. A dull ache radiated from my lower abdomen—a raw reminder of the birth I’d just endured. Looking down at my own body, weak yet vibrantly alive, my mind went blank. “You’re awake? Good. Get up. Gabriel’s been waiting outside forever. Need to go register the baby.” That sharp, familiar voice cut through the silence. My mother-in-law. The woman who’d never offered me a kind look or word. Gabriel… Gabriel. I turned my head stiffly, eyes finding the calendar by the bed. July 12, 1981. I was back. I had come back to the third day after giving birth to my son, Joseph—back to another pivotal moment in my tragic life. My heart hammered against my ribs, not with joy, but with a tidal wave of hatred and dread. The scene from my deathbed—my husband’s voice asking, *What was your mother’s name again?*—remained, a poisoned blade twisted in my soul.

I woke with a gasp, my body suddenly on fire. A searing pain radiated from my chest, spreading through my limbs like molten silver. My hands clutched at the sheets as I struggled to breathe through the agony. *Madison, I'm back.* The voice—that familiar, fierce voice I hadn't heard in three years—growled through my mind. I froze, afraid to hope, afraid to believe. "Lyra?" I whispered into the darkness of my bedroom. "Is that really you?" *Who else would it be? I've been fighting to reach you for so long.* Tears sprang to my eyes as I felt my bones ache with a different kind of pain—the forgotten sensation of my wolf stirring beneath my skin. For three years, I'd been hollow, incomplete, a werewolf without her wolf. The doctors had called it trauma-induced suppression after the rogue attack.

Leo's tiny fingers curled around mine as he nursed, his eyes drifting closed in that perfect, trusting way that made my chest ache. The afternoon light filtered through the nursery curtains, painting everything in soft gold. For once, the pack house was quiet. For once, I could just be his mother. The door opened without a knock. Levi filled the doorway, his Alpha presence sucking the warmth from the room. His eyes swept over us—me in the rocking chair, Leo at my breast—and his jaw tightened. "You look overwhelmed," he said. I wasn't. I'd been calm for the first time in days.

The war room smelled of coffee and ambition. I stood over the massive oak table, my fingers tracing the contours of the Northern Valley map I'd spent three days perfecting. The territory was rich with resources—lumber, water, game—everything our pack needed to thrive. But taking it would require precision. "The key is here," I said, pointing to a narrow pass between two mountains. "If we position scouts here and here, we can monitor the enemy's movements without being detected. Then we send a small team to secure the eastern ridge while the main force—" "Estella." Damien's voice cut through my explanation like a blade. He leaned against the doorframe, arms crossed over his broad chest, his Alpha aura filling the room. "You're overthinking this." I swallowed my frustration. "With respect, Alpha, the supply lines are vulnerable if we don't—" "Enough." He straightened, his jaw tightening.
