Divorcing The Billionaire: My Spectacular Comeback

Haley believed her icy marriage to billionaire Ernst Winters was finally melting after one intimate night. Instead, he accused her of drugging him to trap him and tossed a check in her face. When she confronted her adoptive mother, the woman knelt before Ernst, spinning a false tale of past deception and urging him to choose Keely. Thrown out into the rain, Haley was struck by Ernst's car and abandoned in a hospital while her family celebrated Keely's return. Determined to rebuild, she applied to a top design firm—only to be publicly branded a plagiarist. The real thief? Keely, who had stolen Haley's graduation portfolio. Now, with her original sketches hidden in an attic, Haley vows to reclaim her life and destroy their perfect world.

Chapter 3

The moment Dottie Zamora opened the door and saw Ernst Winters standing behind Haley, her face went through a rapid series of expressions: surprise, then a flicker of panic, and finally, a wide, sycophantic smile.

"Ernst! What a wonderful surprise! Please, come in, come in," she gushed, completely ignoring Haley as if she were invisible.

The family's housekeeper, a woman who had known Haley since she was a child, rushed forward, her face alight with awe. "Mr. Winters, can I get you something? Coffee? Tea?"

Haley watched the performance, a cold pit forming in her stomach. The way they fawned over him, the way they looked right through her, confirmed her worst fears. She wasn't a daughter here; she was a commodity.

Ernst stepped into the cramped living room, his expensive suit and imposing presence making the modest furniture look cheap and worn. He remained standing, his expression unreadable, and gave a slight nod in Haley's direction. "She has something to ask you."

But his voice held no curiosity—only the flat, detached tone of a man who already knew the answer. He was here as a spectator, waiting for the show to begin.

Haley's throat tightened. She could feel his eyes on her, waiting for her to betray herself. But there was nothing left to betray. She turned to Dottie, her voice quieter than she intended.

"Dottie. Two nights ago, you came to my room. Did you touch the glass of water on the nightstand?"

Dottie's smile faltered for a second. "What are you talking about, dear? Of course not. And what a way to speak to your mother. You're upsetting our guest." She shot a nervous glance at Ernst.

"Don't lie to me," Haley pressed, her voice rising, trembling despite her effort. "You were standing right there. You were the only other person in the room. Did you put something in his water?"

Seeing that a simple denial wouldn't work, Dottie's strategy shifted. Her eyes filled with tears, her face crumpling into a mask of maternal grief. She turned away from Haley and addressed Ernst directly, her voice choked with manufactured sobs.

"Oh, Ernst, I'm so sorry. You have to forgive her," she cried, dabbing at her dry eyes with the back of her hand. "She's just so desperate. She did this once before, you know. To get you to marry her in the first place. She put something in your drink... she was so afraid you wouldn't notice her otherwise."

The words hit Haley with the force of a physical blow. It was a lie. A monstrous, calculated lie. She felt the blood drain from her face. She looked at Ernst, and saw his jaw tighten, his eyes narrow into slits. Dottie's fabrication was the perfect confirmation for every dark suspicion he already held.

"That's not true," Haley whispered, her voice trembling. "That never happened."

But her denial was lost in the storm of Dottie's performance. Dottie clung to Ernst's arm, looking up at him with pleading eyes.

"And now... now Keely is coming home from Europe," Dottie continued, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "We can't let Haley stand in the way of your happiness any longer, Ernst. It's not fair to you. It's not fair to Keely."

She delivered the final, devastating blow. "You two should get a divorce. For everyone's sake. It's time for Keely to come home."

In that single moment, Haley's world fractured. It all made sense now. The coldness, the distance, the sham of a marriage. She wasn't the bride. She was just the stand-in. A placeholder to keep the seat warm until the real star of the show—her perfect, beloved cousin Keely—was ready to take the stage. The entire marriage had been a lie, orchestrated by the woman she called "mother."

She stared at Dottie, at the woman who had raised her, and saw a complete stranger. A cold, calculating monster wearing her mother's face.

Even Ernst seemed taken aback by this turn of events. He had expected Dottie to argue for a larger settlement, to defend her daughter. He hadn't expected her to so eagerly throw Haley under the bus and push for a divorce herself. He looked from Dottie to Haley, a flicker of confusion in his cold eyes—but his contempt for Haley didn't lessen. If anything, being caught in the middle of this ugly spectacle only deepened his disgust.

Haley's body was trembling with a cold that had nothing to do with the temperature in the room. "Why?" she asked, the word tearing from her throat. "Why would you do this to me?"

Dottie finally dropped the act. The fake tears vanished. She looked at Haley, and for the first time, Haley saw her for what she truly was. Her eyes were hard, her expression utterly devoid of affection.

"It's what you owe Keely," Dottie said, her voice flat and cold.

The words were a poisoned dagger, twisting in the deepest wound of Haley's heart. You owe Keely. It was the story of her life. The better clothes, the better school, the praise, the love—it all went to Keely. Haley only ever got the leftovers. She finally understood. She had never been part of this family. She was just a tool to be used for Keely's benefit.

Ernst watched the ugly family drama unfold, his face a mask of disgust for all of them. He had seen enough.

Dottie, misinterpreting his silence as agreement, pressed her advantage. She turned back to Haley, her voice dripping with false sympathy. She took Haley's hand, her touch feeling like a spider's crawl. "This is for your own good, too, dear. You'll be much happier once you're free from all this pressure."

Haley snatched her hand back as if she'd been burned. The last shred of love or obligation she felt for this woman, for this family, disintegrated into dust.

She was utterly, terrifyingly alone. Her husband believed she was a manipulative schemer. Her mother had just confessed—not in words, but in every action—to orchestrating her ruin. There was no one on her side. No one to believe her.

A suffocating sense of despair closed in around her. Looking at Dottie's triumphant, greedy face, she had the sickening feeling that this was only the beginning. But what hurt most wasn't the plot itself—it was the knowledge that she had never mattered to them at all. To Dottie, she was a tool. To Ernst, she was an accusation waiting to be proven.

And Keely, Haley thought, the name tasting like ash in her mouth. The cousin who had always been held up as the ideal—the one who could do no wrong. The one for whom Haley had been sacrificed even before she was born. Now Keely was coming home to claim what had always been meant for her: Ernst's name, his fortune, his life.

And I am supposed to just step aside.

But there, in the pit of her despair, a single, unwanted thought surfaced—not of defiance, not of revenge, but of survival. She had nothing left. No husband, no mother, no home. But she still had her hands. She still had her design. The thought flickered and died, smothered by the weight of exhaustion. But it had been there. For a moment.
