Chapter 2

Houston's long strides ate up the corridor as he closed in on the bridal suite. Arthur Salinas's drunken scheming still clawed at his skull. By the time he reached the heavy wooden door, his breathing had turned ragged, his pulse a war drum.

He drove his shoe against the lock plate. The door exploded inward.

Inside, Claire spun around from the vanity, her hazel eyes wide. Her fingers had just closed around her small silk wristlet—the delicate champagne-colored pouch that held her phone, her lipstick, and the tiny St. Christopher medal her mother had pressed into her palm years ago.

Houston filled the doorway, his tuxedo jacket gone, his white dress shirt half-untucked. The mask of cold indifference he had worn at the altar had shattered. His dark eyes burned with feverish, unfocused chaos.

Claire took a step backward, her hand tightening around the wristlet. "What are you doing?"

He crossed the room in three strides and seized her bare wrist. His large fingers clamped around her delicate bones like a steel trap. She could feel the unnatural heat radiating off his palm.

"Let go of me." She kept her voice steady, refusing to let the terror bleed through.

He didn't answer. His gaze was fixed on some point beyond the walls. He dragged her toward the door. Her heels skidded uselessly against the thick carpet. "Where are you taking me?" She threw her weight backward. It was like fighting a moving wall.

He pulled her stumbling body down the hallway to the private VIP elevator. When the doors slid open, he shoved her inside. She stumbled against the mirrored back wall. He swiped his keycard and pressed the penthouse button.

As the elevator ascended, Claire pushed herself upright. She opened her mouth to demand an explanation—and stopped.

Houston had slumped against the handrail. His chest was heaving with ragged gasps. A thin sheen of sweat glistened on his forehead. His dark eyes were glassy, pupils blown wide, and a violent flush was climbing up his neck.

The anger inside her cooled into something sharper. The man before her wasn't just angry. He was breaking.

"Are you ill?" she asked, her voice low and careful. "Houston. Look at me."

His head snapped up. For one suspended second, his burning eyes met hers. And then he lunged.

His hands slammed into her shoulders and pinned her hard against the cold glass. The dead, frozen stare from the altar had been incinerated. In its place was a maelstrom of chaotic lust and primal rage. Arthur's greedy voice had triggered a catastrophic cascade in his PTSD-riddled brain—the phantom smell of gasoline, his mother's screams, the terror of being used and trapped. The woman pinned beneath him became indistinguishable from the faceless figures who had once tried to destroy his family.

Claire watched the humanity drain from his eyes, replaced by something wounded and feral. Before she could speak, the elevator dinged.

The doors slid open onto the dark penthouse foyer.

Houston dragged her across the threshold, past the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a glittering, indifferent Manhattan. He kicked open the master bedroom door and threw her forward.

Claire hit the king-sized bed, the wristlet flying from her hand to land on the nightstand. She scrambled backward, her spine colliding with the tufted leather headboard. For the first time, true, ice-cold fear sliced through her composure.

He tore off his suit jacket. He ripped the bowtie from his neck. Every ounce of Wall Street control had been stripped away, leaving only a raw, bleeding wound in the shape of a man. His movements were jerky, driven by a rage he couldn't direct anywhere but at her.

"Whatever you think you know," Claire said, her voice trembling but defiant, "you're wrong."

Before Houston could respond, a loud ringtone pierced the air.

Claire's cell phone vibrated inside the silk wristlet on the nightstand. The screen glowed through the delicate fabric. Arthur Salinas.

Houston's feverish eyes locked onto the name. The greedy voice from the balcony flooded his mind all over again. His vision tunneled.

He snatched the wristlet, ripped the phone free, and dropped it onto the hardwood floor. He brought the heel of his shoe down with brutal force. Once. Twice. The glass shattered. The ringing died.

"What is wrong with you?" Claire screamed. "That was my only phone!"

"Calling your father for instructions?" Houston's voice was a gravelly rasp. He sneered, a grotesque mask of the cold, controlled man from the wedding. "You cheap, scheming little gold digger. Did you think I wouldn't find out?"

Claire's blood ran cold. "What are you talking about?"

He climbed onto the bed. The mattress dipped deeply as he caged her body beneath his heavy, muscular frame. The heat rolling off him was suffocating. She could smell cigarette smoke and something acrid, as if his very body was burning from the inside out.

Panic seized her throat. She fought—twisting beneath him, her nails raking across his shoulder, aiming a knee at his ribs.

Houston didn't flinch. He captured both her wrists in one massive hand and slammed them down above her head. A thin, red welt circled her left wrist where the gold chain had bitten into her skin.

He forced his mouth onto hers.

It wasn't a kiss. It was a brutal assertion of dominance. His teeth clashed against hers. She tasted copper as her bottom lip split open. Hot tears spilled over her lashes and soaked into the pillows.

Claire stopped fighting. The man above her was no longer present—lost in a nightmare she couldn't reach. She went still, her eyes squeezed shut, whispering her mother's name like a prayer. Mama. I'm sorry.

Hours later, the penthouse was silent.

Houston opened his eyes. The burning fog of his PTSD episode had cleared, leaving behind a pounding headache. He lay still, his mind slowly reassembling the shattered fragments of the last few hours.

Then he heard it. Soft, ragged breathing. Shivering.

He turned his head on the pillow.

Claire was curled into a tight ball on the far edge of the bed, wrapped entirely in the white sheet like a shield. He could see the violent tremor running through her body and the dark purple bruise blooming on her wrist—the shape of his fingers unmistakable.

A sharp flicker of guilt pierced his chest, cold and foreign. He had lost control. He had become the very thing he had spent a lifetime learning to contain.

He sat up slowly, found his trousers, and pulled them on. His gaze drifted to the shattered remains of Claire's phone scattered on the floor like tiny, accusing stars.

He crouched down, caught the device's serial number etched into the inner casing, and walked into his private office.

In the dark, he opened his secure tablet and sent an encrypted command to the Pierce Group's elite cybersecurity division. Within five minutes, they had pulled the final cloud backup from Claire's destroyed phone.

The screen populated with data. Five unread texts from Arthur Salinas, timestamped throughout the wedding and reception.

Remember the plan, Claire.

Tonight has to be a success.

Don't forget your mission. The trust fund depends on it.

You owe me. Don't screw this up.

Make it happen or Rosa pays the price.

Houston stared at the glowing blue text bubbles. The flicker of guilt that had stirred in his chest didn't just vanish—it froze over, crystallizing into absolute, terrifying resolve.

The woman in his bed was an instrument of a scheme designed to bleed his family's legacy dry. And schemes like that were met with one thing in the Pierce empire: total annihilation.

He closed the tablet. The office remained dark. But in the reflected glow of the city lights, Houston's expression was a mask of ice—and behind it, a quiet, lethal plan was already taking shape.
