Chapter 5

Three days later, Ms. Gable tapped a crayon drawing on the miniature classroom desk. A blue figure held a shield over a much smaller boy while black clouds crowded the top of the page.

"Theo has a wonderful imagination," she said, "but since the hospital, every picture has included someone protecting him."

"He had a severe allergic reaction. He is processing it."

"That is part of it." She pulled out a second drawing. "When the children discuss their families, he becomes defensive about Daniel. Yesterday, another student said doctors could not be real dads because they worked too much. Theo cried."

Guilt settled in my stomach. We had tried to keep the custody fight away from him, but children noticed tension even when adults whispered.

"Daniel is the only father he knows," I said. "A biological relative recently learned about Theo and wants contact. We are working with attorneys and a child therapist."

"Thank you for telling me. Until the school receives a court order, only you, Daniel, and your sister can pick him up."

The classroom door slammed against an alphabet poster.

A security guard appeared in the doorway, breathless. "Sir, you have to sign in at the office."

Ryan walked past him in a charcoal suit. Among the finger paintings and tiny plastic chairs, he looked like a threat imported from another world.

"What are you doing here?" I stood so quickly that my knees struck the desk.

"Learning about my son." He took the little yellow chair beside mine, ignoring the way it bowed beneath him. "Ryan Carter. Theo's biological father."

Ms. Gable tightened her grip on her clipboard. "Mr. Carter, you are not on Theo's contact list."

"My attorneys filed a parentage petition. The school will receive the order when the court rules."

"Until then, school policy does not permit you to visit a student without a guardian's consent."

"I am his guardian."

"No," I said. "You are a petitioner."

Ryan's gaze moved to the drawings. He lifted the picture of the blue man and shield.

"Put that down."

"Is this Daniel?"

"Outside. Now."

I took the drawing from him and pointed toward the hall. Ms. Gable quietly asked the security guard to remain by the door.

Ryan followed me past the rows of cubbies. Once we reached the empty corridor, I turned on him.

"You cannot invade his school. He needs one place untouched by this fight."

"I signed in at the main office," he said. "The guard came after me because the principal tried to keep me waiting while he called your attorney."

"That is exactly what he should have done."

"I have donated to this district for nine years."

"A donation is not a visitor's pass."

"I did not threaten anyone."

"You ignored the principal, walked into a secured kindergarten wing, and announced yourself as Theo's father before his teacher had been told the situation. You may call that persistence. To a six-year-old, it is chaos."

For a moment, he looked past me toward the classroom. Children's voices drifted through the closed art-room door, bright and oblivious. Something in his posture eased.

"I brought the school a copy of the petition," he said.

"A petition proves you filed paperwork. It does not give you parental rights."

"My attorney called yours this morning. You refused an introductory visit."

"We requested a therapist and a neutral setting. That is not refusal."

"While lawyers trade emails, he keeps drawing another man as his father."

"Because Daniel is his father in every way Theo understands."

Ryan stepped closer, then stopped when I held up a hand.

"Do not crowd me," I said. "There are cameras in this hallway."

His eyes flicked toward the black dome above the lockers. He put his hands at his sides.

"I would have read to him," he said. "I would have taught him baseball. I would have been at the hospital."

"Regret does not give you permission to frighten him."

"You think this is regret?" His voice roughened. "I found out three days ago that I have a son. Every hour since then, I have discovered something else I missed."

"Then act like someone worthy of meeting him. Follow the process."

"A process controlled by Daniel."

"By a child therapist."

"Chosen by Daniel."

Before I could answer, a small voice came from the art-room doorway.

"Mommy?"

Theo stood with a wooden drawing board clutched to his chest. His green dinosaur sneakers squeaked as he shifted his weight. His eyes moved from me to Ryan.

I crouched. "Come here, sweetheart."

Ryan's anger vanished. He lowered himself several feet away, careful not to block the hall.

"Hi, Theo," he said. "My name is Ryan."

Theo pressed against the doorframe. "I know."

The two words silenced us.

Daniel strode around the far corner carrying a white pastry box from Theo's favorite bakery. His hospital pager bounced against his belt.

"Step away from him," Daniel said.

Theo flinched.

"Stop," I told them both. "No one is arguing in front of him."

Daniel went to Theo and knelt. "I brought strawberry tarts, buddy."

Theo did not look at the box. He stared at Ryan. "Are you the man who made Mommy cry?"

Ryan's face tightened. "Yes. But I am sorry I did."

Daniel rose. "That is enough."

"Let him answer," Ryan said.

"You don't question my son in a hallway."

"Our son," Ryan corrected.

Theo backed away from the sharpness in their voices. His heel caught on a raised edge of tile, and the drawing board slipped from his fingers.

It struck the floor and slid to my shoe, face down.

A folded sheet of paper had been taped to the back.

I recognized the hospital letterhead before I picked it up. The expedited DNA comparison report opened in my hands, its result circled in black ink.

Probability of paternity: 99.99 percent.

A yellow sticky note covered the doctor's signature. The handwriting was neat and unfamiliar.

Mr. Carter said you should know the truth about who your real dad is.

My head snapped toward Ryan.

He stared at the note, and for the first time since entering the school, he looked genuinely shocked.

Theo read the words over my arm. Then he looked from Ryan to Daniel, his face crumpling.

"Does this mean Daddy isn't my dad?"
