Chapter 19

The discovery of a traitor changed everything.

For the first time since the corporate war between Carter Group and Kingsley Corporation had begun, Sophia Carter felt something close to uncertainty.

Not fear.

Never fear.

But caution.

Because betrayal from within was always more dangerous than attacks from outside.

Sophia sat in her office late that evening, reviewing the internal transaction Daniel had discovered earlier. The numbers were precise, deliberate, and hidden beneath layers of legitimate financial movement.

Whoever had approved the Helios Capital transaction had been extremely careful.

Which meant one thing.

They knew exactly what they were doing.

Daniel stood near the desk, arms crossed as he watched her analyze the data.

"You've been staring at that report for thirty minutes," he said.

Sophia didn't look up.

"Because it doesn't make sense."

Daniel frowned slightly.

"What part?"

Sophia finally turned the tablet toward him.

"The approval code."

Daniel leaned closer.

"That belongs to someone in senior management."

Sophia nodded.

"Yes."

Daniel studied the code again.

"Only five people in the company have this level of authorization."

Sophia stood and walked toward the window.

"Then our suspect list is very small."

Daniel sighed.

"Unfortunately, all five of them are people we trust."

Sophia stared out at the dark skyline.

"Someone betrayed that trust."

Daniel hesitated before speaking again.

"Do you want to tell Alexander?"

Sophia paused.

Her instinct was to say no.

But their alliance meant information had to flow both ways.

"Not yet," she said quietly.

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

"You don't trust him either."

Sophia didn't deny it.

"I trust him more than the person inside this building."

Daniel rubbed the back of his neck.

"That's somehow both reassuring and terrifying."

Sophia almost smiled.

Across the city, Alexander Kingsley was also reviewing troubling information.

His private intelligence team had spent the entire afternoon analyzing Helios Capital's investment patterns.

What they found disturbed him.

Victoria Laurent entered his office carrying a file.

"You look like someone who just discovered a problem," she said.

Alexander didn't look up from the report.

"I discovered two."

Victoria walked closer.

"Let me guess. Helios Capital isn't the only player involved."

Alexander finally glanced at her.

"You're getting good at this."

Victoria smirked.

"I've worked with you long enough."

She opened the file and placed it on the desk.

"We've identified one of the shell companies Helios Capital is using."

Alexander studied the document.

"And?"

Victoria leaned forward.

"It was registered only three months ago."

Alexander frowned slightly.

"That's recent."

Victoria nodded.

"And the person who authorized the registration has connections to Carter Group."

Alexander's expression darkened.

"You're telling me someone inside Sophia's company is helping them."

Victoria nodded.

"Yes."

Alexander leaned back in his chair.

He already suspected as much.

But confirmation made the situation far more dangerous.

Victoria studied his reaction carefully.

"You're worried about her."

Alexander's eyes narrowed slightly.

"I'm worried about the plan."

Victoria smiled knowingly.

"Of course you are."

Alexander ignored the comment.

"Keep digging," he said.

Victoria nodded.

"But you should warn Sophia."

Alexander hesitated.

Because warning Sophia would force him to admit something he didn't like.

He cared about her safety.

More than he should.

Later that night, Sophia left Carter Group headquarters.

The building had finally grown quiet as employees went home, exhausted after another chaotic day in the financial markets.

Sophia stepped into the underground parking garage, her heels echoing softly across the concrete floor.

She reached her car and paused.

Something felt wrong.

A strange silence hung in the air.

Then she heard footsteps.

Sophia turned sharply.

A man stepped out from behind a pillar.

She didn't recognize him.

But his expression made her instantly cautious.

"Ms. Carter," he said politely.

Sophia's voice remained calm.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Someone who wants to discuss Helios Capital."

Sophia's eyes narrowed.

"How do you know about that?"

The man stepped closer.

"Because my employers are very interested in your war with Kingsley Corporation."

Sophia's mind raced.

This was no coincidence.

"Your employers," she repeated.

The man nodded.

"Yes."

Sophia's voice hardened.

"And who would that be?"

The man's smile faded.

"People far more powerful than you or Alexander Kingsley."

Sophia felt her pulse quicken slightly.

But she didn't show it.

"What do they want?"

The man tilted his head.

"Your cooperation."

Sophia laughed softly.

"That's not going to happen."

The man sighed.

"I was hoping you'd say that."

Before Sophia could react, he reached into his jacket.

Sophia's instincts screamed danger.

She stepped back quickly.

But suddenly another voice echoed through the garage.

"That's far enough."

Both Sophia and the stranger turned.

Alexander Kingsley stood at the entrance to the garage.

His expression was colder than Sophia had ever seen.

The stranger frowned slightly.

"You weren't part of the plan."

Alexander walked forward slowly.

"You should have planned better."

The man glanced between them.

Then he laughed quietly.

"So the rumors are true."

Sophia frowned.

"What rumors?"

The stranger smirked.

"That you two still care about each other."

Alexander's voice turned deadly calm.

"Leave."

The man shrugged.

"Not tonight."

He suddenly moved again.

But Alexander reacted faster.

Within seconds the man was forced backward, clearly realizing the situation had turned against him.

"You're making a mistake," the stranger warned.

Alexander stepped closer.

"No."

His voice dropped.

"You did."

The man hesitated.

Then he turned and disappeared into the shadows of the garage exit.

The silence that followed felt heavy.

Sophia slowly turned toward Alexander.

"You followed me."

Alexander crossed his arms.

"I had a feeling something like this might happen."

Sophia frowned.

"How?"

Alexander hesitated.

"Because Helios Capital doesn't usually reveal themselves this early."

Sophia studied him carefully.

"And you didn't think to mention that earlier?"

Alexander shrugged slightly.

"I suspected they'd approach one of us eventually."

Sophia shook her head.

"You're unbelievable."

Alexander smiled faintly.

"And you're welcome."

Sophia sighed.

"You didn't have to come."

Alexander's voice softened slightly.

"Yes, I did."

For a moment neither of them spoke.

The tension between them had shifted again.

Not just rivalry.

Not just alliance.

Something deeper.

Something far more dangerous.

Sophia finally broke the silence.

"They wanted my cooperation."

Alexander nodded.

"Of course they did."

Sophia crossed her arms.

"They think they can control this war."

Alexander stepped closer.

"They can't."

Sophia looked at him carefully.

"You seem very confident."

Alexander's eyes locked onto hers.

"Because now they've made a mistake."

Sophia raised an eyebrow.

"What mistake?"

Alexander's voice dropped slightly.

"They threatened you."

Sophia felt a strange warmth rise in her chest.

"You're not my bodyguard."

Alexander smiled.

"No."

He paused.

"But I might be the only person in this city who understands how dangerous this game really is."

Sophia hesitated.

For the first time in a long while, she allowed herself to relax slightly in his presence.

Alexander noticed.

"You're tired."

Sophia rolled her eyes.

"I've been running a corporate war."

Alexander chuckled softly.

"Fair point."

Another quiet moment passed between them.

The air felt strangely intimate.

Sophia suddenly realized how close they were standing.

She took a small step back.

Alexander didn't move.

"You should go home," he said gently.

Sophia nodded.

"You too."

But neither of them moved.

For a brief moment, the world seemed to shrink to the space between them.

Then Sophia cleared her throat.

"Goodnight, Alexander."

She opened her car door and got inside.

Alexander watched her drive away.

Only when the car disappeared did he allow himself to exhale slowly.

Because the truth was becoming harder to ignore.

The war with Helios Capital was dangerous.

But the real danger...

Was the way he still felt whenever Sophia Carter was near him.
