Chapter 4

Corbin never showed his face anymore.

However, I kept getting updates about them while I was recovering in the hospital. Corbin had basically let Ingrid stay at our home indefinitely under the guise of needing Ingrid to take care of the twins for him.

They brought the twins to many places. They watched the sunset at the beach, went on the merry-go-round at the amusement park, and even caught a weekend flight to a tropical country to feed bananas to elephants.

They kept documenting their happy moments as a family.

Corbin even purposely learned how to handwash Ingrid's expensive yet delicate clothes, went to flower arrangement classes to craft bouquets for her, wore the ugly tie Ingrid knotted for him to work, ate her burnt food and praised it like it came from a Michelin-starred restaurant, and basically told her how gifted she was at everything she did.

It was everything I had ever hoped for. I had wanted that life, but Ingrid got everything I wanted without even having to lift a finger. Well, maybe not without lifting a finger.

She had designed an eight-bit music box for him and placed four tiny figurines on the merry-go-round model inside it. Each figurine was modelled after them in real life.

As soon as the design hit the shelves, the music boxes were sold out in seconds because of all the hype it generated. Stallone Group was the biggest client, purchasing ten thousand units of the toy in one go.

That wasn't all. Corbin felt sorry for everything Ingrid was doing for them. He told her not to worry about chores and stuff because I would get them done as soon as I went home anyway.

However, I wasn't going back anymore.

Corbin didn't need me to cook and clean, do the laundry, and watch the kids for him. He just needed a full-time nanny.

Even when he didn't need the nanny because he used to have me, he still never spared even a single ounce of love for me in return.

Everyone and everything had let me down. I didn't want to be a daughter, a wife, or a mother anymore. I just wanted to be myself.

I looked at the digital copy of the divorce papers in my phone that Corbin had signed, feeling as though I finally had a glimpse of the light at the end of the tunnel.

I responded with, "Thanks," and bought the next flight ticket to take me out of here.

After determining that my body had recovered enough, I asked to be discharged earlier. Yet, as the time neared for my flight, my phone suddenly started getting bombarded by angry text messages from Mom.

I felt as though I could hear her angry voice in my head as she sent me angry, vulgar text messages that actually hurt to look at.

"You fucking ungrateful bitch! Answer the fucking phone!"

"What did you do to make the Stallones agree to divorce you, you fucking ingrate!"

Calmly, I turned off my phone, retrieved the SIM card, and threw it into the trash. Then, I closed my eyes and answered her in my head, "Guess."

However, I didn't care whether Mom would eventually guess correctly or not. And even if Corbin found out about my disappearance earlier than expected, I couldn't care less about what they thought anymore.

Whatever it was, I wasn't letting them have their way any longer.

My father gave me an ultimatum: marry a man I despise or lose my entire inheritance. I chose to run, boarding a private jet with no intention of looking back. But his reach is absolute. The phone buzzed before we even left New York airspace. "Send me a picture with Sterling now," his voice barked, "or I'm calling your pilot to turn that jet around." I faked the photo and fled to Las Vegas, my last resort. My mission was simple: find my father's illegitimate son, the one secret that could break his hold over me. My only lead was a grainy picture of a ruthless fixer, a man who cleaned up my father's messes. I found him in a desolate diner, a giant of a man surrounded by a wall of guards. I gambled everything on a single coin toss for the information I needed. He saw right through my desperate bluff. He leaned in close, his voice a low, gravelly rasp. "In my city, the house always wins." I was left standing there, humiliated and defeated. But as he turned to leave, he glanced over his shoulder. "But you're lucky. Today, I'm just curious what Howard Bright's daughter is doing so far from home." He had seen me not as a threat, but as a curiosity. I had lost the battle, but I wasn't done yet. I was no longer running. I was hunting.

But on a freezing, stormy night, he forced her into a scandalous scrap of red silk and handed her over to a notorious, disgusting predator. "You aren't an escort. You're just a free gift." Ebert mocked her, using her as a disposable bargaining chip to secure a corporate funding round. When the predator humiliated her, forced high-proof vodka down her throat, and violently pinned her to the floor, Ebert simply watched with dead eyes. And when Ebert finally intervened to brutally beat the man, it wasn't out of mercy. "She is my property. Even if she is trash that I threw away, a filthy pig like you doesn't get to touch her." For five years, I was the invisible glue holding Damien Crawford together. I was the one who pulled him from a burning car until the skin melted off my back, and I was the one who donated bone marrow when he was on death's door. I even gave up a full-ride scholarship to MIT just to be his nurse. Yet, he believed his mistress, Hadley, was his savior. To him, I was just the maid's daughter who changed his bedpans—a piece of furniture he could abuse while he planned his wedding to another woman. But his cruelty didn't stop at verbal abuse. When my father suffered a massive heart attack, Damien refused to let me use the car, choosing to comfort Hadley over a fake panic attack instead. His mother even slashed the tires to ensure I couldn't leave. While my father died cold and alone, Damien stabbed a needle into my hand just to teach me a lesson about "respect," oblivious to the fact that the scars on my skin were the receipt for his life. He didn't know he was torturing the only person who had ever truly loved him. But the girl who begged for crumbs of affection died along with her father that day. I picked up my phone and dialed the number saved simply as a dot. "He's dead," I whispered to the man on the other end—Anderson Morrison, the city's most feared Don and my sworn protector. "I'm coming," he replied, his voice lethal. "And I'm bringing the army." It was time to show Damien that he hadn't just mistreated a maid; he had declared war on a Queen.
