Chapter 1

I still remember the day Joel 'saved' me in high school. Three bullies had cornered me behind the gym, and out of nowhere, Joel Brooks appeared like my personal superhero, standing up to them despite being outnumbered. That moment cemented something in my teenage heart—a belief that this boy would always protect me, always choose me.

Ten years together. Five years of marriage. One son. Countless business trips to support our family while Joel built his consulting business from home.

And now, my tenth emergency call about my husband's mysterious allergic reactions.

"Ms. Rivera?" The voice on my office phone was professionally calm. "This is Memorial Hospital calling about Joel Brooks. He's been admitted again with a severe allergic reaction."

My stomach dropped as I glanced at the London skyline outside my window. I'd only been here three days on this business trip. "Is he stable?"

"Yes, but Dr. Chen has requested you return as soon as possible."

Guilt twisted inside me as I booked the next flight home. Another crisis, another absence. I could already imagine Sofia consoling Jude, telling him mommy would be home soon, while my seven-year-old's eyes filled with disappointment. At least my best friend was there for them when I couldn't be.

Thirteen hours later, exhausted and jet-lagged, I hurried down the hospital corridor, my heels clicking against the polished floor. Dr. Chen intercepted me before I reached Joel's room.

"Mrs. Brooks—"

"Rivera," I corrected automatically. I'd kept my maiden name.

"Mrs. Rivera," she amended with a small nod. "Could we speak privately before you see your husband?"

In her office, Dr. Chen's expression was carefully neutral as she pulled up Joel's medical file.

"This is your husband's tenth admission for anaphylaxis in fourteen months," she said, her voice measured. "We've run extensive tests, and we've identified a specific trigger."

"That's good news, isn't it?"

"The reaction appears connected to certain perfume compounds." She turned her computer screen toward me, pointing to a chemical formula. "Specifically, this signature blend of notes is causing the reaction. It's found in several high-end fragrances."

Something in her tone made me pause. "I don't wear perfume, Dr. Chen. I'm allergic to most of them myself."

The doctor held my gaze a beat too long. "I see. Well, someone in close contact with your husband is wearing this specific fragrance. The residue on his skin, clothes, or even furniture at home could be triggering these episodes."

A chill ran through me, though I couldn't say why. "I'll look into it. Thank you."

That night, our house felt emptier than usual. Joel would stay overnight for observation, and Jude was sleeping at Sofia's apartment—a common arrangement during Joel's hospital stays. I wandered from room to room, unable to settle, before finally collapsing onto our bed with my phone.

I scrolled mindlessly through social media, seeking distraction. Sofia's Instagram feed appeared—my best friend since college, the one constant in our chaotic lives. She'd posted a selfie earlier today with the caption: "Taking care of my favorite little man while daddy gets better! #BestAuntieEver"

I smiled at Jude's chocolate-smeared face beside her, then continued scrolling through her previous posts. A photo from last Thursday caught my eye—when I'd been in Paris for meetings. Sofia lounging on a bed, champagne glass in hand, wearing a silky robe. "Thursday me-time is the best time," the caption read.

Something about the image nagged at me. I zoomed in, studying the background. In the mirror's reflection behind her, I could make out a distinctive blue and gold wallpaper pattern.

The exact wallpaper we'd chosen for our guest bedroom two years ago.

My hands began to shake as I scrolled further back. More photos during my business trips. Sofia in various states of relaxation, always with that expensive perfume bottle visible on the nightstand—the same brand she'd worn daily for years.

The perfume Dr. Chen had just identified as Joel's allergen.

I took screenshots mechanically, my mind refusing to fully process what my heart already knew. The timestamps, the locations, the intimate settings—all while I was away working to support our family.

The next morning, I texted Sofia to meet at our usual coffee shop. She arrived wearing her signature scent, which now seemed to choke me as she slid into the booth across from me.

"How's Joel?" she asked, stirring her latte.

Without a word, I placed my phone on the table, the screenshots displayed in a neat row. "Your perfume is what's been sending my husband to the hospital," I said, my voice surprisingly steady. "The one you're wearing right now. The one in all these photos—taken in my house, in my absence."

I expected shock, denial, perhaps tears. Instead, Sofia's expression shifted from surprise to something cold and amused. She leaned back, a smile playing at her lips.

"Took you long enough," she said, taking a deliberate sip of her coffee. "You've been too blind and too busy climbing the corporate ladder to notice what's happening in your own home."

The world seemed to tilt beneath me. "How long?"

"Years," she replied with casual cruelty. "And you know what? Joel isn't the only one who prefers me. Jude lights up when I enter the room in a way he never does for you. He told me last week he wishes you would just stay in London."

The coffee shop continued its morning bustle around us, oblivious to the fact that my entire life had just shattered into irretrievable pieces.
