Chapter 3

"Let him in," I told the head of security through the wall unit. "Open the outer gate."

The guard paused. "Ma'am, Mr. Vandermeer said—"

"I said open it."

I took the stairs down two at a time. By the time I reached the grand foyer, the front double doors slammed open.

Kai stood on the threshold. His hair was a wild mess, tie ripped away, his shirt unbuttoned to mid-chest.

Right behind him, clutching his forearm like a frightened fawn, was Marnie.

She wore an oversized cream sweater that hung off one shoulder, her makeup soft, eyes wide and rimmed with faint red. The picture of an innocent girl swept into someone else's storm.

"Lira," Kai breathed, taking three hurried strides across the marble floor. "Thank God. You're actually here."

I kept five feet of cold stone between us. "You rammed your car into the front gate, Kai. Did you forget where you were, or just lose your mind entirely?"

"I lost my mind because of you!" he shouted, his voice cracking before he dropped it to a wounded murmur. "Look at me, Lira. Please. Last night was... it was a nightmare. A panic attack before the biggest day of our lives."

"A panic attack," I repeated flatly. "Is that what we're calling your assistant riding you on our wedding bed?"

Marnie shrank back against his arm, biting her bottom lip.

"I tried to stop him, Miss Caldwell," Marnie said softly, her voice small and trembling. "Kai was drinking. He was terrified about the merger. I was just trying to calm him down, and things got out of hand. If anyone is to blame, it's me. Don't punish Kai for my weakness."

I almost laughed. "Save the audition, Marnie. You looked quite awake when you were scratching his back and staring into my eyes."

Marnie blinked, tears welling on cue. "I was terrified of you. I froze."

"Shut up, Marnie," Kai muttered, waving her off. He locked his gaze onto me, stepping closer. "Lira, listen to reason. My uncle fed you lies in the rain. He saw a frightened girl and seized an opportunity to steal my leverage. You know what Silas is. He's a machine. He doesn't love you. He doesn't even see you as human."

"And you do?"

"Yes!" Kai reached into his pocket and pulled out the velvet jeweler's box, thrusting it toward me. "The papers Silas had you sign aren't bulletproof. Our lawyers can void an emergency registry wedding on grounds of emotional distress. We go downtown right now. We file the annulment. We get married by sunset."

I folded my arms across my chest. "Why would I ever do that?"

"Because we belong together," he pressed, his words coming faster, slipping into that slick, persuasive cadence he used on hesitant board members. "Think about your father. Silas is going to swallow Caldwell Shipping the second he finishes utilizing you. But you and me? If we combine our assets, we control the entire western corridor. Together, we can push Silas out of the conglomerate for good. You save your father, I take the chairman seat, and we run this city side by side."

A chill ran down my spine.

He didn't want me. He didn't even care that he'd humiliated me. He was terrified because Silas held the shears, and he needed my blood to buy his way back to the table.

"You really believe your own pitch, don't you?" I whispered.

Kai's brows knitted. "I'm offering you a lifeline, Lira! Stop being so stubborn. You've always had this ridiculous pride. You make rash decisions when your feelings get bruised, and now you're playing house with a monster who will discard you in six months."

Marnie tilted her head, her tone sweet as poison. "Kai is just trying to protect you, Lira. Everyone in the city is already laughing at you. They're calling you an opportunist who traded the nephew for the billionaire. If you stay here, your reputation is finished. At least with Kai, people will just think you had pre-wedding nerves."

"My reputation?" I took one step toward her. Marnie took half a step back. "You crawled out of my bed twelve hours ago, Marnie. If I were you, I would worry about your employment contract, not my reputation."

"Don't threaten her!" Kai snapped.

His face darkened, the mask of repentance shattering completely. He lunged forward and grabbed my right wrist in an iron grip.

"You're done throwing tantrums," Kai snarled, yanking me toward the open entrance. "You're coming with me. We're going to the lawyer's office, and you're signing the annulment petition before the evening markets close!"

"Let go of me!" I jerked back, digging my heels into the polished floor.

"Stop fighting me, Lira!" Kai barked, veins bulging in his neck. "You're ruining everything!"

"She told you to remove your hands."

The voice wasn't loud. It didn't need to be.

It cut through the high vaulted foyer like a blade through silk.

Kai froze.

Silas stood at the bottom of the west corridor. He wore no jacket, only a dark gray vest over a crisp white shirt, his sleeves rolled neatly to his forearms.

Four armed security men stepped silently into position behind him.

Silas walked forward without haste. He didn't look at Kai's face; his eyes pinned the fingers wrapped around my wrist.

"Silas," Kai said, his voice instantly losing its bravado, though his fingers stayed locked on my skin. "Stay out of this. This is between me and my fiancé."

Silas stopped eighteen inches away. The air turned freezing.

"She is not your fiancé," Silas said, each syllable carved from granite. "She is Mrs. Vandermeer. My lawful wife. And you are trespassing on private property."

"She married you under duress!" Kai yelled, his knuckles whitening. "You ambushed her outside my gates!"

Silas stepped directly between us. His shoulder bumped Kai's chest, breaking his balance. With a quick, brutal twist of his left hand, Silas wrenched Kai's fingers off my wrist and shoved him back three paces.

I stumbled slightly, but Silas's right arm came up behind my waist, steadying me without a word. His palm felt hot through my silk blouse.

"Hear me once, Kai," Silas said, his voice dropping into a register that made the hair on the back of my neck rise. "Touch my wife again, and I won't just pull your credit line. I will call a shareholder vote at dawn, declare your logistics division insolvent, and dump your remaining personal debt into public receivership. You will leave this city with nothing but the clothes on your back."

Kai’s chest heaved. He stared at his uncle, terror warring with fury behind his eyes.

"You're bluffing," Kai whispered. "Grandfather's trust—"

"Your grandfather gave me sole executive discretion over family trust defaults," Silas interrupted smoothly. "Would you like to test whether I'll pull that trigger?"

Silence smothered the foyer.

Marnie gripped Kai's sleeve, tugging him toward the door. "Kai... let's go. Please. Let's just leave."

Kai swallowed hard. His face burned crimson under the scrutiny of the six household staff members standing along the perimeter.

"You think you've won?" Kai hissed at Silas, then darted his venomous glare to me. "He's using you, Lira! When he crushes me, you're next! You're nothing to him!"

"Get out," Silas ordered.

Kai spun on his heel and stormed out into the daylight, Marnie scurrying after him like a stray dog.

The heavy iron doors banged shut behind them.

The foyer fell completely quiet.

Silas removed his hand from my waist. The warmth vanished instantly.

"Are you injured?" he asked, not looking at my face. His gaze lingered briefly on the faint red mark where Kai's fingers had dug into my wrist.

"I'm fine," I said, rubbing the spot. "He's desperate."

"He's finished," Silas corrected, turning back toward his study. "Stay inside today. The press will be circling the perimeter until midnight."

He walked away without another word, his footsteps fading down the long hallway.

By nine o'clock that evening, the media frenzy had reached a fever pitch.

I sat on the edge of the bed in the east wing, staring at the screen of my phone.

Every major business and gossip outlet had picked up the story.

*‘The Caldwell Ambition: Did Lira Orchestrate the Uncle-Nephew War?’*

*‘Insiders Claim Lira Caldwell Abandoned Altar to Seduce Conglomerate Boss.’*

*‘A Family Torn Apart: Sources Reveal Heiress Plotted Coup for Months.’*

My father had called twice. Both times, his voice sounded fractured, strained under the pressure of twenty board members demanding answers before trading began tomorrow. I had promised him everything was under control.

It was a lie. I had traded one cage for another, and the entire world was throwing stones at the bars.

The air inside the suite felt suffocating.

I pulled open the glass doors and walked out onto the stone terrace overlooking the dark estate grounds. The ocean breeze blew inland, sharp and biting against my bare arms.

I gripped the cold limestone railing.

My knuckles turned white.

A single tear slipped down my cheek, hot and stinging against the cold wind. Then another.

I buried my face in my hands, my shoulders shaking as the tears finally came. All the fear, the betrayal, the suffocating humiliation of the past twenty-four hours poured out into the dark. I wasn't a ruthless heiress playing corporate chess. I was a daughter fighting to keep her family from drowning, completely alone in a fortress that belonged to a stranger.

A dry branch snapped somewhere down the stone corridor.

I lowered my hands, wiping my cheeks furiously.

Twenty feet away, half-hidden by the shadows of the arched stone colonnade, stood Silas.

He didn't move. He held a glass of dark amber liquor in one hand, completely motionless in the dark, watching me cry.
