Chapter 3

The dark ribbon of the coastal highway unspooled before Aurora's headlights. She drove a simple grey sedan—a car her biological mother would have considered trash, which was precisely why she had chosen it. The salt wind whipped through the open window, tangling her dark hair. For the first time in five years, her lungs felt clear.

Her phone buzzed on the passenger seat. A text message.

It was from Ivy.

Aurora didn't even need to open it to know what it was. But she glanced down anyway.

The screen displayed a high-definition photo. Ivy's slender hand, wearing a brilliant pigeon-blood ruby ring, was linked intimately with Collin's arm. Below the image was a single line:

"Thanks for making my dream come true, sister."

No apology. No guilt. Just pure, poisonous condescension wrapped in sweet gratitude.

Aurora's green eyes went dead cold. She tossed the phone back onto the seat without typing a single word. Ivy thought she had won a prize, entirely unaware that she had merely inherited a spineless coward.

Then, her gaze fell upon her own hand resting on the steering wheel.

A plain silver band glinted in the dashboard light. It wasn't the three-carat engagement ring she had thrown on the lawn earlier tonight. This was an ancient Foley heirloom—a ring Collin's mother had pressed onto her finger six months ago to seal her as their future bride.

A wave of pure nausea hit her throat.

Aurora pulled the sedan onto an emergency turnout overlooking the Pacific cliffs. She killed the engine, stepped out into the freezing wind, and yanked the silver band from her finger.

Without a second of hesitation, she drew her arm back and hurled the ring into the black ocean below. It caught the moonlight for one suspended instant before vanishing into the thrashing waves.

The final physical tie to the Foley family was broken.

She turned to get back into the car.

And froze.

The air shifted. The distant roar of the surf suddenly felt muted. Her pulse, slow and steady a moment before, instantly locked into high alert.

These were the survival instincts honed during her ten lost years in the dark—years where a single missed shadow meant death. Long before her biological family brought her back to play their meek heiress, Aurora had learned how predators moved.

Two black, heavy SUVs materialized from the darkness without headlights. One blocked her car from the front; the other sealed the road behind her. Perfect tactical box.

The doors slid open in unison. Four tall men wearing tactical gear, heavy boots, and balaclavas stepped out. Each carried a collapsible steel baton.

The leader stepped forward, flexing his gloved hands. "Miss Beaumont. Someone didn't like your tweet tonight. She paid us handsomely to make sure you never type another word."

She.

Ivy couldn't even wait until morning.

Aurora leaned back against her sedan. Her shoulders curled inward, her body trembling slightly, her eyes widening in feigned terror. She let her voice come out high and thin.

"Who are you? Do you want money?" she whimpered, backing against the driver's door. "My family is rich! Please, don't hurt my face!"

Her performance was flawless. The men chuckled, their posture relaxing instantly. To them, she was just another fragile, terrified rich girl who had never seen blood.

"We don't want your money, sweet face," the leader sneered, stepping into her personal space. "We just want your hands."

He reached out to grab her hair.

The instant his fingers brushed her skin, the terror in Aurora's eyes vanished.

It didn't fade; it ceased to exist. In its place was something that made the leader's breath hitch in his throat—the lethal, dead focus of a seasoned killer.

Aurora dropped.

Her center of gravity plunged instantly below his reach. Before he could process her movement, her right elbow snapped upward with terrifying, military-grade speed, driving directly into the underside of his jaw.

CRACK.

A wet, solid crunch split the night air. His eyes rolled back, and his heavy body collapsed onto the gravel, unconscious before he hit the ground.

The remaining three men froze, their brains failing to comprehend the sudden shift.

Aurora gave them no time. She snatched the fallen steel baton from the gravel. With a sharp flick of her wrist, the metal extended with a crisp shink.

She advanced.

The second attacker swung his baton in a wide, aggressive arc. Aurora sidestepped effortlessly—the weapon whistling past her ear—and cracked her steel rod directly across his wrist. He dropped his weapon with a howl. A low, sweeping kick swept his legs out from under him, dropping him hard on his back.

The third and fourth men charged simultaneously from both sides. Aurora used her car as a pivot, ducking one wild swing, her baton lashing out like a striking viper. It smashed into the third man's knee joint. The knee buckled sideways, and he crumpled with a blood-curdling scream.

The last man's nerve completely shattered. He dropped his weapon, turned, and sprinted back toward the SUV.

Aurora closed the distance in three long strides. She kicked the back of his knee, forcing him to his joints, and brought the heavy butt of the baton down across the nape of his neck. He pitched forward into the dirt, limp.

It was over in forty-five seconds. Four trained mercenaries lay broken on the gravel.

Aurora stood in the middle of the road, her breathing barely elevated. The wind whipped her hair across her face, but her eyes held only a terrifying, arctic calm.

She walked back to the leader, nudged his ribs with the toe of her boot until he groaned awake, and crouched down over his trembling form.

She pressed the cold, sharp metal tip of the baton directly against his windpipe.

"Tell me," Aurora whispered, her voice devoid of any warmth. "Did Ivy Beaumont give you cash, or a wire transfer?"
