Chapter 7

: The Hidden Truth of His Father

Jhi Chen was very happy when he felt such dense natural energy. He was sure he could break through.

"Is this the effect of a rank four sacred beast? But why is there something strange...?"

Jhi Chen focused on his body. "That's right, there's something strange. The natural energy from the sacred beast is not that much. Then where is this natural energy from?"

When Jhi Chen continued to observe, he finally found the source of such dense energy. It turned out it came from the broth he ate.

"Truly extraordinary. What kind of water did mother use to cook? It's truly amazing, producing such dense natural energy. I have to ask her. But now I have to quickly absorb it."

When Jhi Chen focused on absorbing, it turned out his dantian's appetite was too greedy. The energy was immediately devoured completely.

The lightning beast was very disappointed because it couldn't absorb everything. The energy had to be shared with the sun and stars.

Seeing the state of the lightning beast, Jhi Chen could only sigh helplessly.

"Your appetites are too big. Even with this much natural energy, it's still not enough to make a breakthrough even one level. I have to find my own resources. I can't keep relying on mother."

Because he didn't manage to break through, he finally turned his attention to the book given by Yan Saotian.

Jhi Chen saw the cover: Lion Dominating the Forest Fist.

When he opened the book, it was written:

Lion Dominating the Forest Fist is a noble-level technique. However, it can be cultivated by martial beginners. This is a unique technique. Its strength will increase along with the user.

However, if learned by martial beginners, this technique has very large requirements. Besides high understanding, the physical body must also be strong. If not, the risk is great.

The risk of bone fracture is only the lightest. If it's more serious, it can end in death.

However, if successful, this technique can kill opponents who are one rank stronger.

"The foreword is interesting. I want to see how difficult this technique is. With my high understanding and strong physical body, I should be able to learn it."

Two days later, Jhi Chen had mastered the Lion Dominating the Forest Fist technique.

"An interesting technique, but you have to pay a high price. Energy consumption is too large. If my energy is the same as other cultivators, it can only be used twice at most. Luckily I have abundant energy, four times that of cultivators of my level. I have to go out first. I want to test this technique. My room is too small, it could cause a commotion. And I also have to ask mother about the water she cooked with. If I can consume it more, maybe I can make another breakthrough."

When Jhi Chen came out of his private room, he saw his mother reading a book. Beside her, Krisik Ape was still focused on cultivating.

"I want to see what level that old ape can develop to. For him, the beast meat and that strange water must be more effective than for me," he muttered.

Then Jhi Chen approached his mother. He knelt down.

"The unfilial child greets mother."

Mu Xiao’er smiled warmly. "My good child, get up quickly. Mother has prepared food for you. Wait a moment, mother will get it."

Actually Jhi Chen wasn't hungry. Cultivators of his level no longer needed to eat and drink. However, he didn't want to make his mother sad. He ate heartily, knowing his mother worked very hard to provide food.

"Mother, I want to ask. Does father love us?" Jhi Chen asked with an innocent but serious face.

Mu Xiao’er turned, looking at her child gently. "Chen’er, why are you asking that? Your father loves us very much. But he has to leave us temporarily," she explained softly.

"Why does father have to leave us? Couldn't we go together?" Jhi Chen's voice sounded a little suppressed. "If father didn't leave us, mother wouldn't be this hard. Mother has to work hard to meet our needs. From now on, mother doesn't need to work hard anymore. Let me look for it. With my current strength, I can guarantee our needs. I also need a lot of resources, I don't want to trouble mother anymore."

Mu Xiao’er smiled faintly. "My good child. Mother doesn't feel troubled. You just focus on practicing," she said while stroking her child's head. "As for why your father left us? Because he has his own difficulties. If we go, it will only become a burden. So it's not that your father doesn't want to bring us, but mother doesn't want to go with him. Mother doesn't want to burden your father. Even though he can protect us, he is carrying out an important mission. If we go, his concentration will be divided. So it's not your father leaving us. Your father loves us very much. Never hate your father. When he returns, he will be happy to see his child who is good, diligent, handsome, strong, and smart like you."

"Mother, I don't hate father," Jhi Chen said while shaking his head slightly. "I just feel sorry for mother. Mother has to bear all the burdens, whereas I have a very strong father. I can see from his books, I learned a lot from the books that father left. There is no simple technique. Mother said father came from the Jhi clan. Yesterday I met someone. He said the Jhi clan is the strongest power in the entire vast martial world. Even just two people from that clan can wipe out one galaxy-ruling clan. One of them is named Jhi Tian. Whereas my father is also named Jhi Tian. Same clan, same name. I don't believe it's a coincidence. I'm sure the Jhi Tian that people are talking about is my father. Am I right?"

Mu Xiao’er was silent for a moment, then looked at her child deeply. "Chen’er, because you are smart, mother can't lie. It's true, the Jhi clan that people told you about is your father's clan. Your father's clan is very strong."

"Mother, if father's clan is very strong, why do we live in this remote place?" Jhi Chen asked with a dissatisfied tone. "Why don't we live with father's clan? Father is also called the strongest genius. Why do we have to live like this? Is it because mother is not a cultivator, so father's clan looks down on mother? Even though mother is a true physician. Very few people can match mother in treating diseases!"

Mu Xiao’er sighed long. "Chen’er, it's not as simple as you think," she replied calmly. "Although your father is very strong and respected in the Jhi clan, there are still those who hate him. There are always people jealous of his talent, and they are people with high positions. If we go there, they will make it difficult for us. That's why your father placed us here. Besides being safe, this place is also special. Many rare spirit plants help mother in medicine."

A LADY FOR A DUKE Novel Cover

The Duke was standing in the middle of the room, his hands in his pockets, his head tilted to one side. It was a relaxed, casual pose, and yet the way he looked at her was anything but casual. The deep midnight of his eyes burned and he radiated a subtle, sensual energy that made the air around him crackle. He looked like a man who'd never heard the word 'no' in all his life. Unluckily for him, 'no' was the only word she had. "There's no reason why I should stay," Anna clasped her shaking hands together in an effort to still them. "I'm not marrying you." His gaze flickered, his mouth curving slightly, and she had the disturbing thought that far from putting him off, her insistence was only inciting him further. "But you haven't heard my proposal yet," he said mildly. "Isn't that why you're here?" "I don't need to hear it. I already know that my answer will be no." "Of course. But you can hardly tell your father that you heard me out when you haven't, in fact, heard me out.... Anna."

In the high-pressure world of The Metropolitan, she's the youngest senior journalist ever hired-an achievement built on ruthless discipline, flawless execution, and a reputation that makes even seasoned reporters double-check their facts before speaking to her. She is sharp. Unshakeable. Precise to the bone. Her life runs on deadlines, color-coded calendars, and emotional walls tall enough to withstand anything. ‎ ‎Dean Mercer is everything she isn't-and everything she doesn't have time for. A wildly successful illustrator whose comic series Love Is a Mess has a cult following online, Dean lives in a world where structure is optional and inspiration is everything. His apartment is chaos. His sleep schedule is chaos. His heart is chaos. He creates brilliance in messy strokes but hides his deepest truths behind humor, charm, and a smile that masks more wounds than he lets on. ‎ ‎So when the magazine pairs them for a high-stakes project-a revolutionary feature blending investigative journalism with illustrated storytelling-everyone expects disaster. Sophia expects worse. ‎ ‎Their assignment: explore modern love through real stories across the city. Raw, unfiltered, unpredictable love. ‎ ‎Exactly the kind of assignment that makes Sophia want to run. ‎ ‎Dean arrives late to their first meeting with coffee stains and excuses. Sophia arrives with a binder thick enough to double as a weapon. Dean studies her timeline like it's written in a foreign language. Sophia studies Dean like he's a problem she needs to solve before he derails everything she's built. ‎ ‎Their partnership begins in sparks-sharp, heated, dangerous sparks. ‎Arguments disguised as discussions. ‎Discussions disguised as power struggles. ‎Power struggles disguised as creative differences. ‎ ‎But tension has a habit of twisting into something else when the nights grow long. ‎ ‎As they dive into the city-interviewing strangers whose love stories survived decades, storms, heartbreaks, second chances-something shifts between them. Slowly. Quietly. Against both of their wills. ‎ ‎Sophia begins to see past Dean's easy humor to the man underneath-the one who fears failing the people he cares about, who draws comics because it's the only way he knows how to tell the truth. And Dean sees the cracks in Sophia's armor-the vulnerability she protects like a secret, the softness she doesn't show, the fire in her that the world misunderstands as coldness. ‎ ‎Their conversations deepen. Their arguments soften. Their laughter blends. ‎And the chemistry-the kind they both pretend not to notice-tightens around them like an invisible thread. ‎ ‎But the closer they get, the heavier the air becomes. Because both of them are hiding something. ‎ ‎Sophia hides her fear of losing control. ‎Dean hides his fear of being the reason someone gets hurt. ‎ ‎And the feature they're creating-meant to uncover the truth about modern love-begins exposing truths they never meant to reveal. About each other. About themselves. ‎ ‎Their late-night work sessions grow intimate, electric. Their stories blur with the stories they're collecting. Dean sketches Sophia without meaning to-capturing expressions she never lets the world see. Sophia writes notes about him she can't bring herself to delete. Something real starts forming in the space between them, fragile but undeniable. ‎ ‎Until the past they both buried finds them. ‎ ‎A mistake from Dean's life-one he thought he'd left behind-reaches the editorial floor at the worst possible time. A detail with enough weight to derail the feature, shatter their progress, and wound the one person who finally saw him clearly. ‎ ‎Sophia's instinct is survival. Run before she gets hurt. Seal her heart before it cracks open. Dean's instinct is retreat. Protect her from the version of himself he fears is still true. ‎ ‎Deadlines tighten. Trust fractures. ‎Their work stalls, their communication splinters, and the connection they've been dancing around threatens to snap under the strain. ‎ ‎But desire doesn't listen to logic. ‎And hearts don't obey deadlines. ‎ ‎Even as they pull away, they keep orbiting each other-drawn back together by an ache neither can extinguish. Their arguments deepen into something rawer, heavier. Their silence holds more meaning than their words. ‎ ‎They must choose: ‎fight for the story that could define their careers... ‎or fight for the connection that could rewrite their futures. ‎ ‎And when an unexpected message, a truth revealed too late, and one irreversible decision collide, they're forced to confront the question their feature was meant to answer: ‎ ‎What does love look like today- ‎and can two people living at opposite rhythms find it before it slips through their fingers? ‎ ‎On the edge of losing their partnership... ‎their second chance... ‎and each other... ‎ ‎
