Chapter 3

Luca Noir was out of touch for half a month.

But his updates on the encrypted social channel were spectacular.

The sun-kissed golden peaks of the Alps, the brilliant auroras of Iceland, the vast white snowfields of Alaska…

Photos of them holding hands, embracing, kissing.

It was just like his irrepressible passion when I was twenty and had first agreed to be his woman.

Back then, he would post dozens of updates a day, flaunting our love, desperate for the whole world to know I was his.

When people called him a mad dog, he would just grin foolishly in response.

All the dreams of faraway places we had once promised each other were shelved because we had no money and no time.

Now that he was rich, he was making them all come true with another girl.

I clutched my chest, feeling only a hollow ache.

All this time, I had been waiting for him to come back to me.

And I had been waiting for my heart to finally give up.

It turned out not to be so difficult after all.

Three days later, I received a long-awaited call from Luca Noir.

Sophia Lune wanted to have the pasta sauce I made last time.

Since I was about to leave, I didn't want any more trouble.

When I delivered the sauce to Moon Bay, Luca Noir was leaning over the railing of the shooting range, his eyes gentle as he taught Sophia Lune how to shoot.

“Don't be afraid, I'm here.”

The sight was a dagger, cracking through the numbness that had settled deep in my bones.

Once, he had taught me to use a gun just like that, hand over hand.

His eyes had been impossibly gentle.

He had soothed my clumsy nervousness over and over. “Don't be afraid, I'm here.”

Now, he was saying the same words to another girl.

Sophia Lune bit her lip. “I've barely used a gun before. This one of yours is so expensive, what if I break it?”

Luca Noir roared with laughter.

“Don't worry, baby. This gun is just for you to practice with. Use it however you want. Never mind breaking it, even if it misfires and you kill someone, I'll take the fall.”

Sophia Lune blushed and pushed him away. “Stop being so improper. I'm not as bad as you make me out to be.”

“Alright, alright, it's all my fault. My baby is the best.”

“Hmph. Step away. I'm about to start shooting.”

She lifted her eyes, and her gaze met mine.

My eyelid twitched, and a sudden dread washed over me.

I had barely taken two steps back when she pulled the trigger. A shot rang out, the bullet speeding toward me.

A searing pain ripped through my arm. I collapsed, the agony so intense it stole my breath.

Blood soaked through my sleeve. Through my blurry vision, I saw Luca Noir's face drain of color as he rushed over.

But he wasn't running toward me. He pulled Sophia Lune aside and wrapped the trembling girl in his arms.

“Don't be scared, baby, I'm here. Are you hurt?”

He swept her up into his arms and sped toward the family's private clinic, not sparing me a single glance.

I lay in a pool of my own blood, my trembling hand reaching out, only to fall limply as the car disappeared into the distance.

When I opened my eyes again, Luca Noir was standing by my bed.

His expression was indifferent. “I thought you'd learned your lesson, but it seems you were saving your big move for this. Deliberately running in front of Sophia's target? What, you wanted to die and frame her?”

I opened my mouth, but the pain made my voice hoarse. Yet, his false accusation made me laugh. “Are you reporting this to the Consigliere, or should I?”

Perhaps realizing how absurd his words sounded, a flicker of unease crossed his face. “Sophia didn't do it on purpose. She's just learning to shoot; it's natural for her to be nervous. You're not seriously injured. There's no need to make a big deal out of this.”

I squeezed the words out through gritted teeth. “She did it on purpose!”

Just as I finished, the door was pushed open by Sophia Lune.

She was wearing Luca Noir's white shirt, showing not a hint of guilt in front of me, the Madre of the family.

She brazenly flaunted the fresh marks of their lovemaking on her body.

Her brazen righteousness made me feel like the guilty one, a creature of the shadows.

I stared at her, my eyes wide with disbelief.

They had actually found time for that in the clinic, while my life hung in the balance.

Sophia Lune, acting as if nothing had happened, condemned me with self-righteous indignation.

“Mrs. Noir, I'm not some mistress your husband keeps. Don't expect me to flatter and fawn over you. You deliberately tried to get yourself shot to frame me because you're afraid I'll take your position, aren't you?”

“Let me tell you, if the expert Luca Noir found hadn't saved my father, I wouldn't have given him a second glance. I sleep with him purely out of gratitude. I'm not like you, full of schemes and plots. My body may be unclean, but my soul is pure.”

“But I'm a person with integrity, kind and generous. Even though you schemed against me, it was ultimately me who hurt you. So, I've already agreed to let your husband sleep with me five more times a month as compensation.”
