Chapter 1

I woke to the familiar ache in my legs, bruises blooming like dark flowers beneath my skin. The morning light filtered through the thin curtains of my small room at the edge of the Silvercrest Pack house—a space that had never felt like home despite the years I'd spent here. Today was my twenty-third birthday, though I doubted anyone remembered. No one ever did.

My fingers traced the marks on my calves, memories of yesterday's 'training'—Beta Gideon's excuse to enforce Marcus's displeasure after I'd accidentally dropped a tray near Victoria during dinner. The pain was a constant reminder of my place in the pack hierarchy: the last Omega of the fallen Moonstone Pack, existing only by the mercy of Alpha Marcus Sterling.

My mate. My tormentor. My salvation and my curse.

I closed my eyes, reaching for our mate bond—that fragile, damaged thread that connected us despite his countless rejections. Even broken, it pulled at me like a hook buried in my heart, a constant reminder of what the Moon Goddess had intended and what Marcus had denied.

"Emma." His voice sliced through my mind, cold and commanding. "Forest boundary. Dawn. Don't make me wait."

The mind-link severed before I could respond, leaving behind the hollow echo of his disapproval. My wolf, Lily, whimpered within me, curling deeper into the recesses of my consciousness. Once, she'd been hopeful, believing that our devotion would eventually earn his acceptance. Now, she simply endured, as broken as I was.

I dressed quickly, ignoring the protest of my battered body. A summons from Marcus was not something even a higher-ranking wolf would ignore, let alone an Omega like me. Whatever he wanted, refusing wasn't an option—not when rejection sickness already made every breath feel like inhaling glass.

The sacred forest loomed ahead as I limped across the dewy grass, its ancient trees standing sentinel at the edge of pack territory. Marcus waited at the boundary, his powerful frame silhouetted against the rising sun. The sight of him still made my heart stutter, a cruel reminder of what my wolf recognized as ours.

But he wasn't alone.

Victoria Hayes stood beside him, her perfect features arranged in a mask of concern. Her hand rested possessively on Marcus's arm, fingers curled around his bicep like she was marking her territory. Behind them stood a small gathering of pack members, including Beta Gideon, whose cold eyes tracked my approach with undisguised contempt.

"You're late," Marcus said, his voice carrying the hint of his Alpha tone—not enough to force compliance, but sufficient to make my knees weaken.

"I'm sorry, Alpha," I whispered, lowering my gaze as protocol demanded. "I came as quickly as I could."

"Not quickly enough," Victoria interjected, her voice honey-sweet with false concern. "Every moment matters when someone's life hangs in the balance."

Marcus's jaw tightened. "Victoria's condition has worsened. The pack healer says her wolf is weakening, and we're running out of options."

I swallowed hard, guilt washing over me though I'd done nothing wrong. Victoria had been 'weakening' for months now, each decline coincidentally occurring whenever Marcus showed me the slightest kindness or acknowledged our bond.

"On your knees, Omega," Marcus commanded, his Alpha tone fully present now.

My body responded before my mind could process the order, knees hitting the damp earth with a painful thud. The bruises from yesterday's punishment screamed in protest, but I bit my lip to keep from crying out.

"Today, you will crawl through the sacred forest on your knees," Marcus announced, his voice carrying to the gathered pack members. "You will pray to the Moon Goddess for Victoria's recovery with every breath. Perhaps she will listen to the pleas of a mate who has failed to fulfill her purpose."

Victoria's lips curved into a triumphant smirk, quickly hidden behind a trembling hand as she swayed dramatically against Marcus's side.

"Begin," Marcus ordered, his golden eyes cold as he stared down at me. "And don't stop until you've reached the ancient oak at the center. The pack will know if you fail."

Lily howled in anguish inside me as I lowered my hands to the ground and began to crawl forward, sharp twigs and stones immediately cutting into my palms and already injured knees. Behind me, I heard Victoria's soft, satisfied sigh.

"Happy birthday to me," I whispered, as the first tears fell to the forest floor.

The late afternoon sun cast long shadows through the human town's market square as I wandered between the stalls, breathing in the mingled scents of fresh bread and blooming flowers. Here, among humans who knew nothing of pack hierarchies or mate bonds, I could pretend to be just another woman selecting roses for her dining table. My fingers traced the velvet petals of a deep crimson rose, and for a moment, I allowed myself to imagine Ethan's face when he saw them on our table tonight. Three years together, and I still hoped for those rare moments when his cold facade would crack, revealing glimpses of the mate bond I believed lay dormant beneath. "Beautiful choice," the elderly vendor said, her weathered hands wrapping the stems in brown paper. "Someone special?" "My mate," I replied softly, the word still sending a flutter through my chest despite everything. The woman's knowing smile faltered as a chill swept through the warm evening air. The market sounds—haggling voices, children's laughter, the clink of coins—seemed to dim as four figures materialized from the crowd. Victoria Taylor stood at their center, her blonde hair catching the dying light like spun gold. Three Delta wolves flanked her, their presence turning the peaceful market into a hunting ground.
