Chapter 2

The morning sun had barely cleared the trees when the heavy double doors of the foyer swung open.

Ethan walked in with his chest puffed out, holding a silver tournament duffel over one shoulder. Sarah walked right beside him in a beige cashmere sweater, her fingers resting lightly on his arm. Next to them stood Leo, dressed head-to-toe in designer athletic gear, holding his gold trophy like a scepter.

There was no apology in Ethan's eyes. No guilt for leaving his daughter waiting in an empty restaurant until midnight.

My mother-in-law, Evelyn, bustled out of the kitchen with a beaming smile, completely ignoring Lily and me as we sat at the breakfast table.

"There's my little champion!" Evelyn cooed, rushing over to pull Leo into a suffocating hug. "I saw the pictures online. You were simply magnificent last night."

"He swept the entire bracket, Mom," Ethan said, a proud grin spreading across his face. "Never doubted him for a second."

Sarah smiled softly, looking around the expansive marble hallway. "Thank you for letting us stay, Evelyn. Moving back to the city has been so overwhelming, and Leo really needs a calm, nurturing environment before the national qualifiers."

"Of course, darling," Evelyn replied, patting Sarah's hand warmly. She then looked straight up the grand staircase. "I've already decided. The corner bedroom on the second floor—the one with the south-facing bay windows and all that wonderful morning sunlight—will be Leo's from now on."

Lily dropped her silver spoon into her oatmeal. The clatter echoed against the quiet walls.

"Mommy..." Lily’s voice trembled as she tugged at my sleeve. "That's my room."

Before I could answer, two estate workers appeared in the hallway carrying stacks of flat-packed cardboard boxes and rolls of heavy brown packing tape.

"Get moving upstairs," Evelyn ordered the workers without even glancing our way. "Clear out everything. Pack the toys into the garage for now."

Lily sprang out of her chair, her tiny legs carrying her up the stairs as fast as she could go. I followed closely behind her, my steps calm and silent.

Upstairs, the workers were already peeling down the hand-painted fairy lights I had strung across Lily's ceiling. A loud, screeching sound ripped through the hallway as a worker dragged a strip of packing tape across a box filled with Lily's picture books.

"Stop!" Lily cried, her small hands grabbing the edge of a moving box. "Don't touch my things! Daddy, tell them to stop!"

Leo ran past her into the room, kicking aside a plush bear on the floor. He hopped onto the pink velvet window seat, pointing at the antique glass display case against the wall.

"Mom, look at those!" Leo shouted, his eyes gleaming with greedy excitement. "Look at those porcelain dolls with the lace dresses! Those are my spoils of war! I won the tournament, so everything in this room is mine!"

He reached out and snatched a delicate, hand-crafted porcelain fairy from the top shelf, swinging it by its arm.

"Give it back!" Lily shrieked, rushing forward with tears streaming down her face. "Grandma gave that to me! That's mine!"

Ethan stepped into the doorway, his brow furrowing into a deep, furious scowl. He grabbed Lily roughly by the forearm, yanking her back so hard she nearly stumbled onto the hardwood floor.

"Stop this ridiculous screaming right now, Lily!" Ethan snapped, his voice booming through the corridor. "Look at you, throwing a disgraceful tantrum in front of our guests!"

Lily buried her face in her hands, her tiny shoulders shaking with sobs. "Daddy, please... it's my birthday room..."

"It's just a room!" Ethan barked, his face tightening with disgust. He turned his glare onto me, his jaw clenched. "You've spoiled her completely rotten, Chloe. Look at her behavior. She doesn't have an ounce of manners or discipline, and it is entirely your fault."

Sarah stepped up beside Ethan, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder while giving me a look of practiced pity.

"Ethan, please don't be too hard on her," Sarah murmured softly, though her eyes lingered smugly on the spacious master suite next door. "I don't want Chloe to feel like we're taking over. If Lily really can't bear to share, Leo and I can always stay in the guest cottage out back..."

"You will do no such thing," Ethan cut in firmly, his voice leaving no room for discussion.

He turned toward me, crossing his arms over his chest and looking down his nose with an arrogant sneer.

"Sarah and Leo just returned to the city," Ethan said, his tone thick with condescension. "Leo has been through a massive transition, and he is extremely sensitive to stress right now. He needs the best room in this house to focus on his training."

I didn't blink. I stood beside Lily, holding her trembling hand in mine, feeling the cold air circulating between us.

"Lily has had that room to herself for five years," Ethan continued, stepping closer to emphasize his authority. "Why can't she share her space with her new brother? Leo is an elite athlete who actually brings honor and prestige to this family. What does Lily do besides whine?"

He scoffed, shaking his head.

"As my wife, you should be more accommodating," he added, his lip curling. "A proper woman would welcome my family with open arms instead of standing there with that sour expression on your face. Learn your place, Chloe."

Sarah offered a faint, triumphant smile from behind his shoulder, while Leo tossed Lily's porcelain doll into an open cardboard box like a piece of trash.

I looked at Ethan.

I looked at the husband I had supported in silence for half a decade, the man who believed his entire empire was built on his own genius. I saw the cheap arrogance in his eyes, the hollow pride, and the pitiful greed oozing from the woman beside him.

A slow, freezing smile formed on my lips.

I didn't shout. I didn't cry. I didn't waste a single breath arguing with him.

"You're right, Ethan," I said, my voice eerily calm and pleasant. "Take whatever you want."

Ethan blinked, momentarily caught off guard by my total lack of resistance. He cleared his throat, trying to regain his dominant stance. "Good. At least you have some sense left."

I bent down, lifted Lily into my arms, and wiped the wet tears from her cheeks.

"Come on, sweetheart," I whispered softly into her ear. "Let them have it. You won't be needing any of this junk where we're going."

I carried Lily downstairs and set her up in the kitchen with a fresh glass of orange juice. Leaving her under the care of the trusted nanny I had hired years ago, I walked out to the secluded stone terrace behind the manor.

The crisp morning wind brushed against my face.

I pulled the encrypted black phone from my pocket and unlocked the screen.

I dialed a direct, secure extension. It picked up on the very first ring.

"Counselor Vance," I spoke into the receiver, my voice steady as steel.

"Good morning, Mrs. Sterling," the chief corporate counsel replied with razor-sharp efficiency. "We have been monitoring the network since your midnight directive."

"I want the secondary phase executed immediately," I said, watching the leaves swirl across the manicured lawn. "Freeze all off-book transfers connected to Ethan's holding accounts. Secure every single ledger detailing his corporate embezzlement and the insider trading transactions from the third quarter."

"Everything is already backed up to our private offshore servers," Vance confirmed. "His financial signatures are completely locked in. He won't be able to erase a single trace."

"Good," I said, a dangerous chill settling behind my eyes. "And the family law firm?"

"Marcus & Cole has reserved their entire senior partner suite for you at two o'clock this afternoon," Vance stated. "The petition for sole custody and the emergency asset injunction are drafted and awaiting your signature."

I glanced up at the second-floor bay window. Leo was leaning against the glass, making faces at the garden below, while Ethan and Sarah stood side by side, admiring their new kingdom.

"I'll be there at two," I said quietly, ending the call.

A silent countdown began in my chest. Ethan had no idea that the empire he was so proud of was about to burn to the ground before sunset.
