My Daughter Fired Her Cheating Dad, Then Interviewed a Billionaire to Replace Him
Chapter 4
The heavy emerald silk of the gown brushed against my ankles as I stepped into the grand ballroom of the St. Regis.
For six years, my wardrobe had consisted of faded cotton shirts, aprons stained with pasta sauce, and sensible flat shoes bought on sale. Tonight, the custom-tailored dress fit like a second skin, paired with diamond teardrop earrings pulled straight from the Whitmore family vault.
Beside me, Sophie held my hand tightly. She wore a cream velvet dress with satin ribbons tied neatly in her hair, her shiny black shoes tapping softly against the polished marble floor.
"Mommy," she whispered, looking around at the towering crystal chandeliers and golden arches. "Is this a castle?"
"Something like that, baby," I replied, squeezing her small fingers.
Near the center of the hall, standing beside a tall champagne tower, was Ethan.
He was dressed in a tailored tuxedo, holding a flute of vintage sparkling wine. Clinging to his arm was Vanessa, wearing a glittering crimson gown that showed off the diamond bracelet Ethan had bought with our family savings. They were laughing with two regional executives, Ethan’s chest puffed out as he played the role of an ambitious rising star.
Then Ethan looked toward the entrance.
His laughter died instantly. His hand went limp, nearly spilling wine down his lapel as his eyes locked onto me.
For a second, confusion washed over his face, quickly replaced by a smug, condescending sneer. He whispered something to Vanessa, handed his glass to a passing waiter, and walked straight toward us with long, confident strides. Vanessa followed closely behind, a mocking smile curling on her lips.
"Claire?" Ethan asked, stopping three feet in front of me, his eyes sweeping over my dress with open amusement. "How on earth did you get in here? Did you borrow a fake pass just to track me down?"
"I don't need a pass, Ethan," I said, my voice dead calm.
Vanessa let out a soft, breathy chuckle. "Claire, sweetie, this is the annual Whitmore Capital Gala. Entry requires a private asset verification. Standing around in a rented dress won't make you belong here. You really should leave before security escorts you out in front of your daughter."
"I told you yesterday, didn't I?" Ethan muttered, shaking his head in mock pity. "You can't survive without me. You're so desperate that you crashed an elite networking event just to make a scene. Take Sophie home before you embarrass yourself further."
Before I could answer, the room fell completely silent.
The low hum of conversations died out as the double doors at the top of the grand curved staircase swung wide open.
Marcus Whitmore stepped onto the landing.
At sixty-two, the Chairman of Whitmore Capital commanded the entire room with an effortless, regal authority. Heads bowed slightly as dozens of billionaires and corporate titans parted to clear his path.
Ethan immediately straightened his posture, adjusting his cufflinks with eager anticipation. "Vanessa, look. That's Chairman Whitmore. If we can introduce our regional project to him tonight, our company will secure ten million in funding."
Marcus didn't glance at the executives waiting on either side of the carpet.
He walked down the marble steps with a steady stride, his eyes fixed entirely on the entrance. He bypassed the city’s top investors, brushed past Ethan and Vanessa without a single glance, and stopped directly in front of me.
The stern line of his face softened into genuine warmth.
"You kept me waiting six years, Claire," Marcus said, his voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom.
He pulled me into a gentle, protective embrace, kissing the side of my head before bending down to scoop Sophie up into his arms. Sophie blinked at his silver hair, resting her small hand curiously against his lapel.
Marcus turned to face the hundreds of stunned guests watching in breathless shock.
"Thank you all for coming tonight," Marcus announced, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Allow me to formally introduce my daughter and the sole successor to Whitmore Capital, Claire Whitmore."
A collective gasp rippled through the hall.
Ethan stood frozen in place. The color drained from his face until he was completely pale. His mouth hung open, his knees visibly shaking as he stared at me, then at the billionaire chairman holding his daughter.
"Claire... Whitmore?" Ethan choked out, his voice cracking. "No. That's impossible. You're an orphan. You didn't have any family..."
Vanessa looked as if she had been slapped across the face. Her smug expression shattered into pure horror, her gaze darting frantically between my diamond earrings and Marcus Whitmore's proud smile. The woman she had mocked as an unemployed, penniless housewife was the sole heir to the wealthiest conglomerate in the country.
I met Ethan's terrified eyes for a split second, feeling neither anger nor pity.
"You never asked about my family, Ethan," I said quietly. "You only cared about what I could do for you."
Marcus handed Sophie back down to me, turning his attention to the approaching board members.
While the entire room buzzed with chaotic whispers about the Whitmore succession, Sophie didn't care about the billions of dollars being discussed around her.
She reached into the small beaded purse hanging from her shoulder.
With great care, she pulled out a crumpled, folded sheet of white paper covered in purple crayon strokes. She pressed the creases flat against her thigh, her brown eyes scanning the crowd of men in tailored tuxedos with sharp, serious concentration.
Beside us, a group of wealthy heirs and young tech founders were trying to catch my eye, adjusting their ties and offering polite smiles. Sophie glanced at each of them, shaking her head softly before moving her gaze along the hall.
Suddenly, a heavy hush rolled across the foyer.
The guests near the entrance parted instantly, clearing a wide lane down the center aisle.
Adrian Blackwood walked into the ballroom.
As the ruthless head of Blackwood Enterprises, Adrian was a legend in the business world. He controlled shipping lanes, international tech firms, and private banking networks that rivaled small nations. He was notorious for rejecting all media interviews, avoiding every high-society matchmaking attempt, and despising frivolous social gatherings. Above all, everyone knew he had zero tolerance for distractions and disliked children.
He wore a bespoke black suit that emphasized his broad shoulders and commanding presence, his sharp jaw and deep-set gray eyes radiating an icy, untouchable aura.
Sophie stopped scanning the room.
She stared at Adrian for ten full seconds without blinking.
She looked down at the crumpled *New Daddy Checklist* in her hand. Then she peeked at the cover of a luxury business magazine resting on a nearby cocktail table that featured Adrian's face under the headline *The Most Elusive Trillionaire*. She looked back up at the real man standing twenty feet away.
Without a word of hesitation, Sophie let go of my dress.
"Sophie, wait," I called softly, but she was already marching across the polished floor with purposeful steps.
The entire room seemed to hold its breath. Guests stared in sheer terror as a five-year-old girl in a cream velvet dress walked directly into the path of the most feared man in the city.
Two of Adrian's bodyguards moved forward to block her, but Adrian raised a single gloved hand, stopping them in their tracks.
He paused, looking down at the little girl standing directly in front of his polished leather shoes.
Sophie held her paper in one hand and a stubby purple crayon in the other. She tilted her chin up, looking straight into Adrian's intimidating gray eyes without a trace of fear.
"Mister," Sophie asked, her clear, sweet voice echoing in the dead-silent ballroom. "Are you richer than my daddy?"
A collective shudder ran through the surrounding crowd. People braced for Adrian's cold dismissal.
Instead, Adrian’s sharp gaze softened almost imperceptibly.
He lowered his tall frame, crouching down until he was at eye level with the five-year-old girl.
"Much richer," Adrian answered in a low, smooth baritone.
Sophie nodded approvingly. She lifted her crayon and drew a firm, decisive checkmark inside the first square box on her paper.
Then she leaned in slightly, studying his striking jaw and sharp features with serious evaluation.
"You're more handsome too," Sophie declared, tapping the second box with the tip of her crayon. "So there are only two questions left."
She met his gaze with absolute gravity.
"Mister, do you want an interview?"
