Chapter 2

Caleb didn't go to Ellie. He didn't drop to his knees to comfort her. Instead, his gaze darted down the corridor toward the grand lobby, his jaw working as if he were calculating liability on a spreadsheet.

"Take the service exit down the hall," he said, keeping his voice strictly lowered. "There are photographers from three different business journals near the front doors. Vanessa doesn't need this kind of embarrassment on her wedding day."

The words hit me like a slap to the face.

"Vanessa doesn't need the embarrassment?" My voice trembled with pure disbelief. "What about your daughter, Caleb? What about us?"

"You're making a scene in private, which is fine, but we are not doing this in front of investors," he said, checking his silver watch with an impatient flick of his wrist. "Go through the back. Don't go all the way home yet, either. Take Ellie to the café across the square. Once the vows and the first toast are over, I can slip out for twenty minutes to see her."

He was already penciling us into the margins of his schedule. We were a ten-minute break between champagne flutes and press photos.

Before I could speak, sharp footfalls echoed against the marble floor.

Linda Foster stepped around the corner, looking every bit the mother of a rising tech billionaire in her champagne silk gown and diamond pendant. Her eyes swept over my plain knit sweater and Ellie’s pink dress with total, unvarnished disdain.

"I see you got my message," Linda said smoothly.

"You sent that text on purpose," I said, cold fury replacing the shock in my veins. "You wanted me to come here."

"Of course I did," Linda replied, without a shred of shame. She didn't blink. She didn't hesitate. "You’ve spent seven years clinging to Caleb while he dragged you along out of habit. You needed to see this with your own eyes, Maya. You always knew Caleb needed someone suitable eventually."

*Someone suitable.*

The address hadn't been a mistake. The message hadn't been an olive branch. Linda had lured me into this hotel just to force me to watch Caleb marry another woman, ensuring I finally understood my place at the bottom of his priorities.

"He promised me," I whispered, the weight of seven years crashing down on my chest. "He promised we would build a life together."

"And you have a house and an allowance," Linda dismissed, waving a manicured hand. "A sensible woman would take the money and be grateful. Caleb has a global company to run, and that requires an alliance, not a college sweetheart who stopped growing when she got pregnant."

"Mother, that's enough," Caleb muttered, though there was no real heat in his defense. He was already adjusting his lapel again.

Linda ignored him, turning her sharp gaze down toward Ellie. Ellie was still pressed against the wall, clutching the crumpled purple card against her chest, her big brown eyes filled with silent panic.

"And keep that child quiet," Linda said, pointing a finger toward the lobby. "The Whitmore family is greeting guests right on the other side of those doors. If anyone hears her calling Caleb 'Daddy,' it will create an unnecessary scandal before the contracts are even finalized. Do not let her speak."

Ellie shrank back even further, her small shoulders rising up toward her ears. Her chin quivered, and two fat tears spilled down her cheeks, leaving dark streaks on her pink collar.

"Mommy?" Ellie’s voice broke into a terrified whisper. She reached out and grabbed a fistful of my coat. "Why can't I say Daddy's name? Did I do something bad? Am I not being a good girl?"

Something inside me fractured, sharp and final.

Seven years of quiet compromises. Seven years of packing his bags, ironed shirts, reheating dinners at midnight, and keeping our daughter quiet so he could take conference calls. I had swallowed every insult, every dismissive comment from his mother, all because I believed we were working toward a shared horizon.

I dropped to my knees on the cold floor, pulled Ellie into my arms, and held her face between my hands.

"Look at me, Ellie," I said, my voice steady, loud enough for Caleb and his mother to hear every syllable. "You did nothing wrong. You are good, you are smart, and you are loved. Do you hear me? You are not a secret, and you never have to hide."

"Maya, stop," Caleb hissed, taking a step toward us, looking frantically over his shoulder. "Keep your voice down. You're upsetting her for no reason."

"I am not hiding her for your comfort ever again," I said, rising to my feet and shielding Ellie behind me. "You don't get to have a billionaire's wedding out front and keep us like dirty laundry in the back."

"Get them out of here, Caleb," Linda said coldly, her lips pressed into a thin line. "Call security if she refuses to walk."

"That won't be necessary," a deep, composed voice cut through the corridor.

We all turned.

Adrian Vale stepped fully into the hallway. Standing well over six feet in a tailored charcoal suit, he carried an air of absolute authority that instantly shrank the space around him. The gold hotel pin gleamed on his lapel.

He didn't look at Caleb or Linda. He looked directly at me, his sharp gray eyes assessing the situation with quiet clarity before shifting his focus to the hotel staff member standing near the service doors.

"Marcus," Adrian said calmly. "Key the private elevator. Have the black sedan pulled around to the south executive bay immediately. Make sure the exit is clear of all media."

"Yes, Mr. Vale," the employee answered without hesitation, tapping his radio and moving instantly.

Linda scoffed, stepping forward with her chin raised. "Mr. Vale, this is an internal family matter. We are paying a fortune to host this event in your ballroom today. I suggest you let our security handle our guests."

Adrian finally turned his gaze toward her. His expression remained entirely polite, but his eyes were like winter ice.

"Mrs. Foster, you rented the grand ballroom," Adrian said, his tone smooth and unyielding. "You did not purchase the hallways, and you certainly do not dictate how guests are treated on my property."

Caleb bristled, his face reddening. "Vale, this is between me and the mother of my child. Stay out of it."

Adrian looked Caleb up and down, taking in the pristine tuxedo, the white gardenia, and the child hiding behind my coat.

"Then perhaps you shouldn't have turned your family into a hotel problem, Mr. Foster," Adrian replied cleanly.

Caleb’s mouth snapped shut. He looked as though he wanted to swing, but he stayed glued to the floor. Adrian Vale’s reputation—and the fact that the Whitmore Group did major hospitality business through the Vale Group—gave him plenty of reason not to cause a scene.

Adrian turned back to me, extending a hand toward the private elevator at the end of the hall. "The car will take you wherever you need to go, Ms. Foster."

"It's just Maya," I said, my voice clear and firm. "Maya Lin."

Adrian gave a single, respectful nod. "This way, Ms. Lin."

I took Ellie’s trembling hand and began walking down the corridor, keeping my back straight and my head held high.

"Maya, wait!" Caleb called out behind us, taking two rushed steps forward. "We need to talk about the trust! We need to settle the house!"

From the grand ballroom, the heavy brass doors parted. A wedding coordinator’s frantic voice drifted through the air. "Groom to the aisle, please! Mr. Foster, five minutes to the processional! The bride is ready!"

Caleb froze.

I stopped at the elevator doors and looked back one last time.

He stood stranded in the blinding chandelier light, caught between the life he had thrown away and the gold-plated cage he had bought. His hands twitched at his sides, but he didn't take another step toward us. He couldn't. His fifty-million-dollar bride was waiting, and his ambitions owned every single inch of him.

The elevator chimed, the mirrored doors sliding open.

Ellie looked down at the mangled piece of paper in her hand—the drawing of our little family, crushed beyond repair. Without a word, she reached out and dropped it squarely into the stainless steel trash can beside the elevator.

She stepped inside and wrapped both of her small hands around my fingers, looking up at me.

"Mommy," she whispered softly as the doors began to slide shut. "Are we still waiting for him?"

Through the narrowing gap, I watched Caleb turn his back on us and walk toward the altar.

"No," I said, watching the digital floor numbers begin their descent. "We’re done waiting."
