Chapter 1

The ghost showed up at our third-anniversary party.

Not a real ghost, of course. That would have been too simple, too tasteless for the Hamptons estate my husband, Alexander Sterling, had rented for the occasion. No, this ghost was very much alive. Her name was Cecilia, and she was brought by my mother-in-law, Eleanor.

The party was a masterpiece of curated perfection—the kind Alex excelled at. Soft light from a thousand candles glimmered off the infinity pool, which seemed to spill into the Atlantic. Champagne flowed like tap water. Everyone who was anyone in New York’s old-money and new-tech circles was here, laughing with just the right volume, their designer clothes looking effortless. I stood beside Alex, my hand lightly on his arm, playing my part: Amelia Sterling, the elegant, supportive wife. The former artist who’d traded her paint-splattered jeans for couture and found a different kind of canvas in philanthropy and hosting.

I felt a familiar, hollow ache beneath my ribs. A year ago today, my parents had been on their way to surprise me for my birthday. They never arrived. A truck, a rain-slicked highway… Alex had held me at the funeral, his voice thick with grief. "It was just a terrible accident, my love. A horrible, senseless accident."

I pushed the memory down, smiling at a venture capitalist’s wife. Then I saw Eleanor gliding through the crowd, a strange, serene smile on her face. Beside her was a woman I’d never seen before. Cecilia was all wrong for this party. While every other woman was sheathed in silk or minimalist linen, she wore a flowing, embroidered dress that looked like it came from a flea market. Her hair was long and wavy, with tiny crystals braided into it. She looked ethereal, fragile… and completely out of place.

A cold trickle of dread dripped down my spine.

Eleanor clinked a fork against her champagne flute. The chatter died down. All eyes turned to her.

"Dear friends, family," she began, her voice carrying the weight of generations of Sterling authority. "Thank you for celebrating Alexander and Amelia. Three years is a milestone." She paused, her gaze sweeping the crowd, landing on me with an icy precision. "As you know, the Sterling family takes its legacy—and its protections—very seriously. Recent… setbacks in our investments have been concerning."

Alex’s arm tensed under my hand. I knew about the "setbacks." A failed biotech venture, a hedge fund underperformance. Normal market fluctuations, but to the Sterlings, any dip was a personal affront.

"So," Eleanor continued, "I undertook a spiritual audit of our family’s energy field. I consulted the renowned intuitive, Cecilia." She gestured to the woman beside her, who offered a beatific, close-lipped smile. "The findings are… profound. And they concern Amelia."

The air vanished from my lungs. A hundred pairs of eyes swiveled to me. I kept my smile frozen in place, a mask of polite curiosity.

"Cecilia has confirmed," Eleanor announced, her voice dropping to a dramatic, hushed tone that still carried to the back, "that Amelia’s energy signature is fundamentally incompatible with the Sterling lineage. It creates a dissonance, a… curse, if you will, that is directly responsible for our recent misfortunes."

A collective gasp rippled through the crowd. My cheeks burned. I felt Alex go utterly still beside me.

"There is, however, a solution," Eleanor said, her eyes gleaming with triumph. "A purification. The birth of a ‘bridge child,’ conceived between Alexander and the woman whose soul is harmonically aligned with our family’s destiny—Cecilia. This child will restore the balance."

The silence that followed was absolute, broken only by the distant crash of waves. I couldn’t breathe. I looked at Alex, my eyes screaming, *Do something! Say something!*

He stared straight ahead, his jaw a hard line. He said nothing. Not a word in my defense.

The world tilted. The polite murmurs that started up sounded like they were coming from underwater. I saw smirks, pitying glances, avid curiosity. I was a spectacle. The cursed wife.

"Excuse me," I heard myself say, my voice surprisingly steady. I turned and walked, one foot in front of the other, through the blur of faces, toward the house. I made it to the nearest powder room, locked the door, and crumpled onto the cold marble floor.

Tears came then, hot and silent. Not for the public humiliation, but for the look on Alex’s face. The silent acquiescence. A year of grief, of leaning on him, of believing we were a team against the world… and he’d just let his mother eviscerate me with New Age nonsense to explain a stock dip.

I splashed water on my face, watching the mascara run. *Get it together, Amelia. You can’t hide in here forever.* I had to go back out there. I had to face them.

I straightened my spine, repaired my makeup as best I could, and opened the door. The party noise washed over me. I moved through the house, a ghost in my own life, heading for the terrace doors.

And then I saw them. On the balcony, half-hidden by a potted olive tree. Alex and Cecilia. He was standing close, too close. His head was bent toward hers. And his hand—the hand that had worn my wedding ring—was resting on the small of her back, his fingers pressing gently into the cheap fabric of her dress.

My stomach twisted. At that moment, my phone buzzed in my clutch. A text from an unknown number.

Unknown: *Is the passcode to his UES apartment still your birthday? You should check.*
