Chapter 1

Morning light filtered through the tall, arched windows of the palace library, glinting off the frost that clung stubbornly to the windowpanes. It was a chill that spoke of something older than any winter she had ever felt, a lingering magic that made her fingers tingle. She rubbed them briskly and glanced at the fire blazing in the hearth - its flames stubbornly warm, refusing to be tamed.

She had always believed her life was ordinary. Forgotten by the world, even by her own bloodline, she lived quietly among the palace servants and scholars. And yet, ever since she could remember, she felt... different. Magic pulsed faintly under her skin, like a rhythm only she could hear, a whisper beneath her heartbeat that promised more than a simple life.

A sound made her freeze. Footsteps - deliberate, heavy, echoing in a way that made the floor beneath her hum. And then he appeared.

Tall. Dark. Immortal. Louis.

His eyes, sharp and deep as obsidian, took her in, and a shiver ran down her spine that had nothing to do with the frost. His presence carried centuries of power and restraint, and yet beneath it all, a flicker of something else - curiosity, amusement, a thread of desire barely contained.

"You walk as though this palace is yours," he said, his voice a low rumble, teasing, dangerous. "But I've been asleep long enough to know when something... unfamiliar enters my domain."

Ella's heart fluttered, caught between awe and fear. "I... I live here," she stammered, though the words sounded small and fragile even to her own ears. "My name... is Ella."

Louis smiled - dark, knowing, almost predatory. "Ella," he echoed. "A name that burns and freezes alike. I think... I will remember it."

Something in her chest tightened. That smile, that voice, that presence - it stirred something primal and terrifying. Magic flared faintly beneath her skin, and she realized with a start that the palace itself responded, walls humming with recognition, the frost around the windows twisting subtly as though acknowledging his return.

Louis' POV

Centuries of slumber had dulled nothing. The dark king's senses awoke with the pulse of the palace beneath him - the faint echo of Old Winter stirring, the subtle hum of magic, and the heartbeat of a young woman he had not yet met but who already drew him inescapably close.

He moved toward her, deliberate, shadowed, power thrumming with each step. The air around him darkened, a subtle chill mixed with heat, the duality of centuries of restraint and desire.

"You are... different," he said softly, studying her. Her eyes did not betray fear, only curiosity and a faint defiance. He had met many mortals, many who had wielded magic poorly or weakly, but she - she held something raw, untamed, yet balanced.

His hand twitched almost instinctively, longing to reach out, to test, to claim - but restraint won. For now.

"This is... going to be interesting," he murmured, barely audible, almost a whisper for himself. And yet, the palace seemed to lean in, to listen, as though the walls themselves awaited the collision of flame and frost that would soon come.

Ella's POV

Louis stepped closer. The air around him carried warmth and shadow, light and dark. Her pulse accelerated, a blend of fear, fascination, and an unexpected thrill. She realized, suddenly, that the pulse of her own magic resonated with his presence. Flame and frost stirred beneath her skin, responding to the rhythm of him - centuries of restraint meeting the purity of her untested power.

"Why... are you here?" she whispered.

"To see," he said, voice softening, teasing now, almost flirtatious, "what the world has produced while I slept... and perhaps... to see what burns brighter than fire itself."

Her cheeks flushed, not from shame, but from the undeniable pull she felt - toward power, toward danger, toward a dark immortal who challenged every sense of caution she had ever known.

And in that moment, the palace held its breath. Flame and frost shimmered faintly around her, responding to the quiet hum of destiny. She did not yet know it, but her life, and the fate of kingdoms, was about to shift forever.

Louis' POV

He studied her, a slow smile curving his lips, shadowed and dangerous. Desire was rising, a flame he had not felt in centuries. Yet beneath the hunger was something else - curiosity, fascination, and an undeniable connection that prickled at the edges of his long-dormant heart.

"You will remember me," he said softly, leaning just close enough that the scent of her, faintly sweet and impossibly alive, reached him. "And I will remember you, Ella... forever."

The first sparks of flame met the first threads of frost. And somewhere deep beneath Valerith Palace, the Old Winter stirred, whispering that the convergence had begun.
