Chapter 2

The word hung in the air like a death sentence.

“How old is the child?”

Daniel Thompson didn’t even blink. He stood there in the luxurious hotel suite, shirt collar open, looking every bit the composed businessman who had just been interrupted during a minor inconvenience. Behind him, Sophia watched with folded arms, her lips curved in a small, knowing smile. The boy, Liam, had been ushered into the adjoining room, but his innocent voice still echoed in Elena’s ears.

“Fourteen,” Daniel answered flatly. His tone carried no shame, no hesitation. Just facts.

Fourteen.

Their marriage was twelve years old.

The realization crashed over Elena like icy water. He had fathered a child with her best friend two years before he had even proposed to her. While she had been planning their future, sacrificing her career, and building a home for him, he had already built another family in secret.

“You…” Her voice cracked, barely above a whisper. “You had a whole family before you married me?”

Daniel sighed, running a hand through his perfectly styled hair. He closed the door behind her with deliberate calm, as if sealing them inside this nightmare. “Elena, let’s not turn this into a melodrama. You weren’t supposed to find out this way, but since you’re here…”

He walked over to the minibar, poured himself a glass of whiskey, and took a slow sip. Sophia moved closer to him, placing a possessive hand on his arm. The gesture was intimate, comfortable, like they had done it a thousand times before. Because they had.

“I loved Sophia long before you came into the picture,” Daniel continued, his voice steady and emotionless. “She’s always been the one I wanted. But my family… they had expectations. They needed a certain type of wife. Someone presentable. Someone who wouldn’t cause problems or demand too much.”

Elena felt her knees weaken. She gripped the back of a chair for support, the silk of her anniversary dress suddenly feeling like chains around her body.

“You were the easiest choice,” he said, delivering the blow with clinical precision. “Obedient. Quiet. You never questioned me. You gave up your career without a fight. You handled the house, the social events, everything I needed, without ever asking for anything in return. You made my family happy. You were… convenient.”

The word landed like a slap.

Convenient.

Not loved. Not cherished. Just convenient.

Tears burned in Elena’s eyes, but she forced them back. “Twelve years, Daniel. I gave you twelve years of my life. I defended you to my family when they warned me. I ignored every late night, every canceled plan, every time you looked at me like I was… nothing. And all this time, you were with her?”

Sophia let out a soft, almost pitying laugh. She stepped forward, her designer heels clicking against the marble floor. Her beauty had always been striking, but tonight it felt like a weapon.

“Oh, Elena,” Sophia said, her voice dripping with false sympathy laced with arrogance. “You were never his type. Too plain, too eager to please. You should’ve known. I was always there, through every ‘business trip,’ every late night at the office. While you were playing the perfect little housewife, I was the one he actually wanted in his bed. You were just the placeholder.”

The female rivalry hit harder than Elena expected. This wasn’t just betrayal by her husband. This was her best friend, someone she had trusted with her deepest insecurities, twisting the knife with a smug superiority.

Elena’s mind flashed with painful memories. Snippets of their life together played like cruel highlights:

The time she had planned a weekend getaway for their fifth anniversary, only for Daniel to cancel at the last minute because of “work.” Sophia had been oddly understanding when Elena cried to her about it the next day.

The countless nights she waited up, reheating dinner, while he came home smelling faintly of another woman’s perfume. Sophia had always been the one to comfort her, saying, “Men like Daniel have pressures. Just be patient.”

Even the way Sophia had encouraged her to quit her job: “You’re so lucky to have a man who can provide. Why stress yourself with a career when you can focus on being the wife he deserves?”

All those red flags she had ignored, all the times she had defended him to others… it had all been part of their game.

“You planned this,” Elena whispered, her voice trembling with rage and heartbreak. “Both of you. While I was sacrificing everything, ”

“Exactly,” Daniel cut in, setting his glass down with a sharp clink. He pulled out a thick envelope from the drawer of the nearby desk and tossed it onto the coffee table. Divorce papers. Already prepared. “I’ve had these drawn up for months. You get nothing, Elena. The prenup was ironclad, my family made sure of that. The house, the cars, the accounts… all in my name. You walked away from your career for me. That was your choice.”

He smiled then, a cold, calculated smile that shattered whatever remnants of love she still clung to.

“And soon, I’ll announce my relationship with Sophia publicly. The wedding will be grand. Liam deserves to have his father and mother together without hiding anymore. My family already approves. They always liked Sophia better anyway.”

The humiliation burned deep. Not only had he replaced her, but he was planning to parade his mistress, her former best friend, as the new Mrs. Thompson in front of the same social circle that had watched her play the devoted wife for twelve years.

Elena stared at the papers, her hands shaking as she picked them up. The words blurred through unshed tears. She had given up everything for this man. Her dreams, her independence, her dignity. And in return, he had treated her like a disposable accessory.

“Why?” she choked out, the question tearing from her soul. “Did you ever love me? Even for a moment?”

Daniel looked at her for a long second, his eyes devoid of any warmth. The silence stretched, heavy and cruel.

“Never,” he said finally, his voice flat and final. “I tolerated you. That’s all.”

The word “tolerated” echoed in her mind, louder than any shout could have been.

Sophia smirked, leaning against Daniel’s side. “Sign the papers, Elena. It’ll be easier for everyone. You can go back to whatever little life you had before. Maybe find a nice, simple man who matches your level. Daniel and I… we belong in this world. You never did.”

Elena’s chest heaved with suppressed sobs. The pain was so overwhelming it felt physical, like her heart was being ripped out while she was forced to watch. She had believed in their marriage. She had built her entire identity around being his wife. And now it was all crumbling because she had been nothing more than a convenient tool.

Her fingers tightened around the divorce papers. Part of her wanted to scream, to throw the papers in his face, to demand justice. But another part, the broken, exhausted part, wondered if fighting was even worth it.

Daniel crossed his arms, his patience clearly wearing thin. “Sign the papers, Elena.”
