Chapter 3

"You can’t stay locked in this cage forever, Odessa."

Joe’s text had arrived at dawn on the burner phone Anson gave me.

*I know Marcus set up my father. If you want the real ledger before Anson gets raided, meet me at the pier warehouse. Come alone, or I burn the files.*

Four days of being shadowed by Walter’s stone-faced guards had driven me out of my mind. Every meal was watched. Every hallway had a guard. When the pantry delivery van pulled into the estate courtyard at noon, I squeezed through the service gate while the kitchen staff unloaded crates.

Two buses and a frantic taxi ride later, I stood inside the damp cavern of Warehouse 9.

"Joe?" My voice echoed off corrugated iron walls. "I'm here. Show me the papers."

Footsteps crunched over broken glass.

Joe stepped out from behind a rusted shipping container. He wore a fresh wool coat, hands casually shoved in his pockets. A thin, mocking grin spread across his face.

"You really are pathetic," Joe said.

My stomach dropped. "Where is the ledger?"

"There is no ledger, Odessa." He pulled out his phone, tapping the screen once. "Did you honestly think I wanted to clear your family's name?"

"You said Marcus set up your father—"

"Marcus did," Joe replied smoothly. "And your father signed the execution order. Both of them deserve to rot. But you? You're the easiest lever to pull."

A sudden glare of high-beam headlights flooded the warehouse doors.

Engines revved, and three vans screeched to a halt across the entrance, blocking the sunlight. Doors slammed open. A dozen men poured out into the dirt aisle—half of them carrying heavy video rigs, the other half rough-looking thugs with brass knuckles tucked into their jackets.

"Look who crawled out of hiding," a reporter shouted, pushing a lens straight toward my face. "Odessa Vance meeting the man who exposed her family! Are you offering hush money, Miss Vance?"

"Step back!" I shouted, holding my bag up to block the flashing bulbs.

Two burly men stepped behind me, cutting off my retreat. One caught my wrist in an iron grip.

"Hold still, sweetheart," the man grunted. "Smile for the camera. Let the city see how low the Vance heiress will sink."

"Get your hands off me!" I kicked at his knee, but he barely flinched, twisting my arm behind my back.

Joe watched from ten feet away, tilting his head with cold amusement. "Don't fight it, Odessa. Tomorrow morning, your face will be on the front page of every paper in the state. 'Fugitive Vance Heiress Caught Soliciting Criminals.' Let's see your brother salvage his reputation after this."

"You coward," I spat, struggling against the man's grip. "You complete coward!"

The sound of shattering metal violently ripped through the room.

A black SUV smashed straight through the warehouse's side loading door, tearing the corrugated siding off its frame. Wood splintered. Metal screeched against concrete.

Before the dust even settled, four men in tactical jackets jumped out, clearing the space with drawn batons.

Then came Walter.

He didn't walk with his usual calm poise. He moved with brutal speed, stripping off his suit jacket and tossing it to the ground. His tie was loosened, his eyes burning with a fury I had never seen before.

The gentleman was gone.

In two strides, Walter closed the distance to the man gripping my arm. He grabbed the thug by the throat, driving his thumb straight into the man's windpipe. With a sickening crack, Walter slammed the man's head into the corrugated wall.

The thug slumped down, unconscious.

Walter grabbed my waist and dragged me behind his back, placing his wide frame between me and the crowd.

Silence slammed down on the warehouse. The reporters froze, their cameras lowering.

Walter's knuckles were split, red drops falling onto the dusty floor. His gaze swept the room, freezing every man in place.

"Before you touch her," Walter said, his voice dropping to a deadly, gravelly whisper, "you'd better think twice about whether you can bear the consequences."

No one moved. Even the reporters seemed terrified to exhale.

Joe took a step forward, his jaw tight. "Walter Cross. What is a billionaire like you doing playing bodyguard for a ruined heiress? Did Anson sell his sister to pay off his debts?"

Walter didn't flinch. He walked straight toward Joe until their chests were inches apart.

"Joe Gallagher," Walter said, every syllable dripping with icy disdain. "You think you're playing chess with Marcus. You think you're clever. But if you mention her name again, I will buy every loan note your bankrupt company holds and dismantle you down to your shoes."

Joe's eyes flared with anger. "This is family business. It has nothing to do with you."

"Everything she touches has to do with me," Walter replied softly.

He didn't wait for Joe's response. Walter turned around, caught my hand in his firm, warm grip, and pulled me toward his SUV.

"Get in," he ordered.

I climbed into the passenger seat without a word.

My pulse was racing, hammering in my ears. I sat with my hands tucked between my knees, glancing sideways at his profile as he gripped the steering wheel and sped out onto the highway.

His jaw was set in stone. Blood smeared against the black leather of the wheel from his knuckles, but he didn't wipe it off.

He had torn down that warehouse door for me. He had thrown away his pristine reputation in front of flashing cameras just to rip that man's hands off my skin.

A strange, unfamiliar thrum stirred in the center of my chest.

For three years, Joe had claimed he loved me, yet he threw me to the wolves the second it served his purpose. Walter had claimed I was nothing more than an obligation to my brother, yet he had stood like an iron wall between me and total ruin.

***

We returned to the estate in total silence.

Walter didn't yell. He didn't scold me for running away. He simply climbed out of the car, barked an order to double the gate perimeter, and disappeared into the west wing.

By midnight, the manor was completely still.

I couldn't sleep. The smell of dust and the echo of Joe's laughter kept replaying in my mind.

I pulled on a thick sweater and slipped down the quiet corridor toward the ground floor, intending to get an ice pack from the kitchen for Walter's hand.

As I passed his private study, I noticed the heavy mahogany door stood slightly open. A soft pool of amber light spilled across the Persian rug in the hallway.

"Walter?" I murmured, stepping to the threshold.

The room was empty. A glass of untouched whiskey sat on the corner of his wide desk.

Beside the towering bookshelves at the back of the study, a hidden panel had been swung wide open. It led into a windowless inner chamber I hadn't noticed before.

Curiosity pulled my feet forward.

"Walter?" I called out again, softer this time.

No answer.

I pushed the panel open and walked inside.

The breath died in my throat.

The room had no furniture except for a single leather chair facing the back wall.

And that entire wall was covered from floor to ceiling with photographs.

Every single photo was of me.

My knees turned to water. I stepped closer, staring in sheer disbelief.

There was a photo of me at seventeen, laughing on the grass outside my high school, a chocolate ice cream cone melting over my fingers.

There was a shot of me at twenty, sitting by a university library window with a stack of law textbooks.

There was a picture of me curled up on a bench in Central Park, fast asleep in the afternoon sun, my hair tossed across my forehead.

Hundreds of them. Spanning years. Documenting every phase of my life from angles I had never seen, captured by a lens I had never noticed.

I stumbled toward the center of the wall, my hand trembling as it hovered over the prints.

Right in the middle of the collage, mounted inside a polished black frame, hung a yellowed newspaper clipping. Beneath it, written in bold, dark ink directly onto the wall, was a single date:

*October 14 — Ten years ago.*

The door behind me clicked shut.
