Chapter 1

I thought burying my grandfather would be the darkest hour of my life.

I was wrong.

The memorial hall smelled of damp lilies and melting wax. Dozens of relatives stood with bowed heads, clutching black programs while soft organ music drifted through the speakers. I stood in the front row, staring at Grandpa’s portrait bordered in white silk, my knuckles white against the edge of the pew.

A sharp hum broke the silence.

Above the altar, the massive projector screen flickered awake with a blinding flash of blue light.

"Is someone running the memorial slideshow already?" my aunt Evelyn muttered from behind me. "Marcus, did you cue the technician?"

"Not yet," Uncle Marcus grunted. "Sit tight."

The speakers popped. A harsh, unmistakable gasp echoed across the vaulted ceiling.

Then came the rustle of sheets.

I looked up. My stomach plummeted through the floor.

It wasn't a retrospective of Grandpa's youth. It was a video. Dim lighting, tangled white linen, and my own bare back arching against a headboard. My face turned toward the lens, flushed and breathless, murmuring words meant only for a locked bedroom. Beside me on the mattress was Joe.

The entire chapel went dead silent for two seconds.

Then hell broke loose.

"Turn it off!" Uncle Marcus bellowed, his face purpling. "Unplug the damned projector! Who the hell put this on?!"

"Sweet Jesus," Aunt Evelyn shrieked, covering her teenage daughter’s eyes. "Odessa! What is the meaning of this filth?!"

Murmurs exploded like firecrackers through the pews.

"At her own grandfather's funeral..."

"Disgraceful."

"Look at her. No shame at all."

The audio played on—wet, intimate, raw. My voice begged from the speakers, whispering Joe’s name with an affection that now felt like poison.

My knees shook so violently I had to catch the wooden rail. My skin burned cold. "Turn it off," I whispered, the words catching in my throat. I cleared my dry throat and screamed louder, "Turn it off right now!"

A cousin yanked a cable from the wall. The screen snapped black, plunging the hall back into dimness, but the damage was carved into the room. Fifty pairs of eyes bore into me, thick with disgust.

"Shameless girl," Aunt Evelyn spat, pointing a trembling, manicured finger at me. "Your grandfather built this family's reputation for fifty years, and you defile his casket with your bedroom tapes!"

"I didn't do this," I gasped, looking around frantically. "I didn't bring that flash drive! I didn't touch the system!"

My eyes swept the crowd, searching for an anchor, searching for the only person who could explain why a private recording from our private apartment was playing in a church.

I found him near the marble pillars at the back.

Joe stood tall in a tailored charcoal suit, hands resting casually in his trouser pockets. He wasn't rushing forward to shield me. He wasn't yelling at the technician. He just watched me, his dark eyes flat and empty.

I pushed past my glaring relatives, stumbling down the carpeted aisle.

"Joe," I said, catching his sleeve. "Joe, tell them. Someone hacked our cloud drive. Someone stole that video from your laptop."

He didn't pull away, but he didn't hold me either. He looked down at my hand on his sleeve as if an insect had landed there.

"Nobody hacked anything, Odessa," he said.

His voice was steady. Level. Conversational.

"What?" The breath died in my chest. "What are you talking about?"

"I plugged the drive into the media console twenty minutes ago," he said, speaking loud enough for the entire aisle to hear. "I set it to auto-play right after the opening prayer."

Gasps rippled through the gathering.

I stared at him, waiting for the punchline, waiting for the wry smile he always gave me when he made a bad joke. It never came.

"Why?" My voice cracked. "Joe, why would you do that to me? Why here? Today?"

"Because you needed an audience," Joe replied smoothly. "And because your grandfather doesn't get to rest in peace with stolen money."

Before I could process his words, heavy oak doors at the chapel entrance banged open.

Four men in dark windbreakers and two uniformed officers marched down the center aisle. The gold badges clipped to their belts caught the chandelier light.

"Arthur Vance? Margaret Vance?" the lead investigator barked, scanning the front pews.

My father stiffened. My mother dropped her black purse to the floor.

"I am Arthur Vance," my father said, trying to maintain his boardroom posture. "Officers, this is a private family service. Have some respect."

"Save it for the magistrate, Mr. Vance," the agent countered, pulling a folded warrant from his chest pocket. "You and your wife are under arrest for grand larceny, cross-border commercial fraud, and illegal diversion of public pension funds."

"This is an outrage!" Uncle Marcus shouted, stepping between them. "On what evidence?"

The officer gestured toward Joe. "On evidence provided by Mr. Joe Gallagher this morning. Handover of five years of unencrypted accounting ledgers. Hands behind your back, sir."

The metallic click of handcuffs echoed off the stained glass.

"Joe!" my father roared, straining against the officer's grip as steel bit into his wrists. "You bastard! I treated you like a son!"

"You treated my family like trash," Joe shot back, his jaw tightening into stone. "You bankrupted my father's firm, bought out his patents for pennies, and drove him off the bridge. Did you think ten years made me forget?"

My mother began to weep loudly as an officer guided her toward the exit. "Odessa! Odessa, do something!"

I stood frozen in the center aisle. My parents were being dragged out like common criminals. My grandfather's portrait rested fifty feet away in silent condemnation.

Uncle Marcus turned toward me, his face twisted in absolute revulsion. He didn't look at my arrested parents; he looked at me, standing beside the man who had ruined us.

"Did you know about this?" Marcus demanded, his voice trembling with venom.

"No!" I cried out, tears finally breaking free. "Uncle Marcus, I swear to God, I didn't know anything about his father—I didn't know about the fraud—"

"You brought him to Sunday dinners!" Marcus snarled, stepping into my face. "You brought a viper into our home! You let him into our corporate retreats, into our records, and now you parade your filth before the entire city!"

"I loved him!"

"Shut your mouth," Marcus commanded. He turned to the remaining family members, his voice booming through the rafters. "Listen to me! From this second onward, Arthur and his branch are dead to this family. Odessa Vance no longer carries our name. If any of you give her a dollar, a roof, or a phone call, you are cut off from the trust."

He glared back at me, his eyes dead. "Get out of this chapel. You are no longer one of us."

"Uncle Marcus, please—Grandpa—"

"Get out!"

The cousins turned their backs. Aunt Evelyn sneered and looked away.

My legs gave out. I collapsed onto the carpet, my knees hitting the floor before the altar. The rough wool burned through my stockings.

Footsteps approached. Expensive leather shoes stopped inches from my hands on the floor.

I looked up. Joe was gazing down at me, tall, immaculate, and utterly untouchable.

Three years. A thousand mornings waking up in his arms. Every secret I had ever whispered, every vulnerability I had shared, had been fed into a ledger of vengeance.

"Did you ever love me?" I whispered, my voice breaking on the carpet. "Even for one day?"

Joe crouched down, meeting my eyes. There was no rage in his expression, only a chilling, absolute void.

"This is what your father owes me," he said quietly. "Every kiss, every promise, every night. It was all collateral, Odessa. Nothing more."

He stood up, adjusted his cuffs, and walked away down the aisle without looking back once.

I stayed on the floor, listening to his car engine roar outside in the courtyard.

He thought he had destroyed the Vance family. He thought he had taken his final revenge on the man who killed his father.

He had no idea that the ledgers he gave to the feds weren't the real books—and the person who truly signed the liquidation orders ten years ago was still sitting in this very room.
