Chapter 1

Serena Vance, an unloved wife, clutched a custom-made red velvet cake to her chest, enduring the cold rain outside an exclusive Upper East Side club. She hoped this small gesture for her husband, Julian, would bridge the growing chasm between them on their third anniversary. But as she neared the VIP suite, her world shattered. Julian's cold, detached voice sliced through the laughter, revealing he considered her nothing more than a "signature on a piece of paper" for a trust fund, mocking her changed appearance and respecting only another woman, Elena. The indifference in his tone was a physical blow, a brutal severance, not heartbreak. She gently placed the forgotten cake on the floor, leaving her wedding ring and a diamond necklace as she prepared to abandon a marriage built on lies. Her old life, once a prison of quiet suffering and constant humiliation, now lay in ruins around her. Three years of trying to be seen, to be loved, were erased by a few cruel words. Why had she clung to a man who saw her as a clause in a will, a "creature," not a wife? The shame and rage hardened her heart, freezing her tears. Returning to an empty penthouse, she packed a single battered suitcase, leaving behind every symbol of her failed marriage. With a burner phone, she dialed a number she hadn't touched in a decade, whispering, "Godfather, I'm ready to come home."

The crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow across the Weaver estate's grand ballroom, their light dancing off champagne flutes and diamond jewelry. I stood in the corner, my white cane tapping softly against the marble floor as I tried to orient myself in this sea of voices and clinking glasses. "Nadia, darling, you look absolutely radiant tonight," Mrs. Harrington's voice dripped with false sweetness as she brushed past me. "So brave of you to come out like this." I smiled politely, though my heart wasn't in it. Five years of blindness had taught me to read people through their tones, and hers screamed pity. "Thank you," I replied, my fingers nervously twisting the engagement ring Nikolas had placed on my finger before his arrest. "I couldn't miss welcoming Nikolas home." The Homecoming Gala was in full swing—a lavish celebration for Nikolas Weaver's release from federal prison. Five years ago, I had sacrificed my eyesight to save him in that terrible car crash. Tonight was supposed to be our reunion, the beginning of our promised future together.

The crystal chandelier cast dancing shadows across the white tablecloth as I sat stiffly in my chair, trying not to fidget. Five years of marriage to Edward Armstrong hadn't prepared me for nights like this—surrounded by Manhattan's elite in our penthouse dining room, where every word and gesture felt like a test I was destined to fail. I stared down at the menu card, the elegant script swimming before my eyes. The letters refused to form words I could understand. My fingers trembled slightly as I reached for my water glass. "Is something wrong, Magnolia?" Natasha's voice sliced through the quiet conversation. She was seated across from me, her red lips curved into what others might mistake for concern. "You look... confused." "I'm fine," I murmured, my Appalachian accent thickening under stress. "Just deciding." "Perhaps I could help?" Natasha tilted her head, her diamond earrings catching the light.

Nicole had entered marriage with Walter, a man who never returned her feelings, bound to him through an arrangement made by their families rather than by choice. Even so, she had held onto the quiet belief that time might soften his heart and that one day he would learn to love her. However, that day never came. Instead, he treated her with constant contempt, tearing her down with cruel words and dismissing her as fat and manipulative whenever it suited him. After two years of a cold and distant marriage, Walter demanded a divorce, delivering his decision in the most degrading manner he could manage. Stripped of her dignity and exhausted by the humiliation, Nicole agreed to her friend Brenda's plan to make him see what he had lost. The idea was simple but daring. She would use another man to prove that the woman Walter had mocked and insulted could still be desired by someone else. All they had to do was hire a gigolo. Patrick had endured one romantic disappointment after another. Every woman he had been involved with had been drawn not to him, but to his wealth. As one of the heirs to a powerful and influential family, he had long accepted that this pattern was almost unavoidable. What Patrick wanted was far more difficult to find. He longed to fall in love with a woman who cared for him as a person, not for the name he carried or the fortune attached to it. One night, while he was at a bar, an attractive stranger approached him. Because of his appearance and composed demeanor, she mistook him for a gigolo. She made an unconventional proposal, one that immediately caught his interest and proved impossible for him to refuse.

I tore through my jewelry box for the third time, fingers frantically pushing aside diamond earrings and pearl necklaces that Henry had given me over our ten years together. None of them mattered now. Only the jade pendant—that exquisite piece of emerald green stone that Henry had presented to me on our fifth anniversary with promises of "until death do us part." "It has to be here," I whispered, my voice echoing in our spacious bedroom. The afternoon light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows, illuminating dust particles dancing in the air as I upended another drawer. The pendant wasn't just jewelry. It was the symbol of everything I believed about our marriage—solid, precious, eternal. The jade had been cool against my skin for five years, a comforting weight that reminded me I was loved, chosen, secure. Now it was gone. "Maybe I left it in the bathroom," I murmured, hurrying down the hallway of our penthouse apartment. The marble floors felt cold beneath my bare feet as I pushed open the bathroom door, scanning the countertops with desperate eyes.
