Chapter 1

The crystal chandeliers of the Plaza Hotel's Grand Ballroom cast a golden glow over the Winter Gala, illuminating three hundred of New York's corporate elite in their finest evening wear. I adjusted a centerpiece of white roses and silver branches, my fingers trembling slightly as I scanned the room for any imperfections. As Brand Ambassador for Hart Enterprises, the success of this event fell on my shoulders—even if my name appeared nowhere on the program.

Across the room, Lucien stood with his arm wrapped possessively around Lilith's waist, both of them laughing with the CEO of Meridian Technologies. Lucien's tuxedo was impeccably tailored, emphasizing the broad shoulders I once traced with my fingertips in the darkness of his apartment, before he was CEO, before Lilith. Before everything changed.

'There you are, Alyssa.' Lilith's voice cut through my thoughts as she approached, her crimson gown flowing behind her like spilled blood against the marble floor. 'You look... tired.'

I forced a smile. 'Just ensuring everything is perfect for tonight's presentations.'

'Always so dedicated.' Her words dripped with honey, but her eyes remained cold. 'Come with me. I've brought something to help.'

I followed her to the preparation room, my heels clicking against the floor in rhythm with my racing heart. Lilith closed the door behind us and revealed an antique porcelain tea set from her designer handbag.

'My special herbal blend,' she said, pouring steaming amber liquid into a delicate cup. 'For calming nerves. You look like you need it.'

I hesitated, but Lilith's eyes narrowed slightly. After three years of working under her scrutiny, I'd learned which battles to fight. This wasn't one of them.

'Thank you,' I murmured, accepting the cup. The tea had an unusual bitter undertone beneath its floral scent, but I drank it quickly, eager to return to my duties.

Lilith watched me finish with a satisfied smile. 'Better get back out there. Your welcome speech is in forty minutes.'

By the time I took the stage, a dull ache had settled in my lower abdomen. I gripped the podium, forcing myself to smile as I welcomed Hart Enterprises' valued partners and clients. The pain intensified with each sentence, spreading through my body like fire.

'As we celebrate another successful year—' A sharp cramp doubled me over mid-sentence. The microphone amplified my gasp of pain across the ballroom. Three hundred faces blurred before me as I clutched my stomach. Warmth spread between my legs, and I looked down in horror at the dark stain blooming across my navy dress.

'Alyssa!' Lucien's voice seemed to come from far away as he rushed toward the stage. The room spun around me as I collapsed, my knees hitting the hardwood floor.

Through the haze of pain, I heard Lucien barking orders: 'Call an ambulance! Clear the room! Angela, prepare a statement about Ms. Reed's sudden illness.'

His arms lifted me, but even in my agony, I noticed his eyes darting around the room, assessing the damage to the company's image rather than focusing on me. His phone buzzed continuously in his pocket as the paramedics loaded me into the ambulance.

'The baby,' I whispered, reaching for his hand. 'Lucien, I think I'm losing our baby.'

His face paled, but before he could respond, his phone rang again. He glanced at the screen—Robert Hart, his uncle and senior board member.

'I need to take this,' he said, stepping away to answer.

In the sterile hospital room, the doctor confirmed what I already knew. I had been six weeks pregnant. Had been. When I mentioned Lilith's tea through my tears, Lucien's expression hardened.

'You're upset and looking for someone to blame,' he said, checking his watch. 'Lilith would never do something so... extreme. She didn't even know you were pregnant.'

'Neither did I, until tonight,' I whispered. 'But she might have suspected—'

'I need to get back and manage this situation,' he interrupted, squeezing my hand briefly. 'The board is concerned about how this looks. Rest, and we'll talk tomorrow.'

He left me alone with the antiseptic smell and the hollow ache in my womb, his cologne lingering in the air long after the door closed behind him.

Seven days later, Diana slipped into my apartment with my laptop from the office. 'I told them you asked for work files to review during your recovery,' she said, her eyes filled with concern. 'How are you really doing?'

'I'm fine,' I lied, opening the computer. As I searched for the quarterly presentation files, an email notification appeared—Lucien had forgotten to log out of his account on my laptop.

My finger hovered over the close button, but something made me hesitate. I clicked on a folder labeled 'Board Restructuring—Confidential' instead.

The encrypted emails between Lucien and his uncle Robert revealed everything: plans to reinstate Marcus Carlson as board chairman, explicit instructions to keep the Reed family scandal buried, assurances that my role would remain ceremonial regardless of my contributions.

My hands stopped trembling as I read the final line: 'The Carlson alliance must be maintained at all costs. Alyssa serves her purpose, but she must understand her place in this arrangement.'

Something cold and resolute settled in my chest where grief had lived for the past week. I closed the laptop and looked up at Diana.

'I need your help,' I said quietly. 'And I need to contact Kellen Marshall.'
