Chapter 1

I was in the kitchen preparing dinner when I heard it—the cruel laughter of children coming from the playroom upstairs. My hands stilled over the vegetables I was chopping, knife hovering in mid-air as I strained to listen. Among the chorus of giggles, I recognized my son Ethan's voice, but he wasn't laughing. He sounded upset.

Setting down my knife, I wiped my hands on my apron and moved quietly toward the stairs. As I approached the playroom, Tommy's voice—Victoria's six-year-old son—rang out clearly.

"Your mom is just a cooking servant! She cleans our toilets!" Tommy taunted, his voice carrying the unmistakable tone of a child who had learned cruelty from adults. "My mom says your dad left because you guys are poor losers."

My heart constricted in my chest. I stood frozen outside the doorway, one hand pressed against the wall for support.

"That's not true," Ethan's small voice replied, wavering but defiant. "My mom is a chef. She makes the best food in the world."

"Chef?" Tommy scoffed, followed by more laughter from the other children. "Chefs work in restaurants, stupid. Your mom just works for my mom because you're poor. My mom says she feels sorry for you."

I'd endured six months of cleaning Victoria's mansion, cooking her meals, and caring for her son while she attended charity galas and spa days. I'd swallowed my pride because Ethan needed stability after the divorce. But hearing my former best friend's son parrot her words made something snap inside me.

I pushed open the door to find Tommy standing over Ethan, who sat cross-legged on the floor, clutching a toy car. Three other children—friends of Tommy's from his private school—formed a semicircle around my son.

"That's enough, Tommy," I said firmly, my voice steadier than I felt.

The children startled at my appearance. Tommy's face immediately transformed from sneering bully to wounded victim.

"Mrs. Chen was being mean to me!" he wailed, running past me and down the hallway. "Mommy! Mommy!"

I knelt beside Ethan, whose eyes were bright with unshed tears. "Are you okay, sweetheart?"

Before he could answer, Victoria appeared in the doorway, Tommy clutching her designer pants and peering around her legs with a triumphant smirk.

"What's going on here?" Victoria demanded, her perfectly manicured hand resting on Tommy's head. "Tommy says you yelled at him."

"Your son was bullying Ethan," I explained, rising to my feet. "He was telling the other children that I'm just a servant and mocking us for being poor."

Victoria's expression hardened, but not with the maternal concern I'd expected. Instead, she looked annoyed—at me.

"Tommy, take your friends downstairs for cookies," she instructed. Once the children had scampered away, she turned to me, arms crossed over her silk blouse. "Sophia, you can't discipline my son. That's not your place."

"My place?" I echoed, incredulous. "Victoria, he was repeating things he must have heard from you. About my divorce, about why I'm working here—"

"Well, it's not exactly a secret, is it?" Victoria cut in, her voice dripping with condescension. "Marcus left you because you couldn't support his ambitions. You couldn't even hold onto your catering business. And now look at you—a single mother with no prospects, living off my charity."

Each word was a knife, precisely aimed at my deepest insecurities. But what hurt most was realizing this woman—who had once been my maid of honor, who had held my hand through my parents' rejection—had never truly been my friend.

"Mom is not a servant!" Ethan suddenly shouted, jumping to his feet. "She's the best mom ever, and she's going to be famous for her cooking someday!"

Victoria laughed—a cold, brittle sound that made my skin crawl. "Oh, honey, your mother couldn't even keep her husband interested. What makes you think she'll ever amount to anything more than this?"
