Chapter 2

Ryan didn’t shout again.

He stared at the broken glass in the trash can, his chest heaving, his jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek.

For three years, his greatest weapon against Vivian had been ice. Whenever she questioned his late nights or asked about the women’s numbers on his phone, he simply stopped speaking to her. He would sleep in the guest room, ignore her meals, and let her suffocate in silence until she crawled back on her knees, begging for a single glance.

He looked at me now, apparently convinced this was nothing more than an ugly plea for attention.

"You're pathetic," he said, his voice dropping into that familiar, condescending drawl. "You think breaking things is going to make me care? You're only humiliating yourself."

I didn't blink. I simply dried my hands on a towel, watching him through the mirror.

Ryan snatched a spare silk tie from the closet rack and looped it around his neck with practiced arrogance. He smoothed the lapels of his suit, sneering at my reflection.

"I don't have time to indulge your breakdown," he said, turning toward the bedroom door. "And honestly? Don't bother offering to fix my tie. Bella did it at the office yesterday, and she actually knows what looks good on me. She has taste."

He paused, waiting for the jab to land. He seemed to expect tears. He seemed to expect me to ask who Bella was.

When I gave him nothing but a flat, predatory stare, his sneer faltered. He scoffed, adjusted his cuffs, and marched down the hallway.

A moment later, the front door slammed with a heavy thud.

*Bella.*

The intern he had hired three months ago. The name had surfaced in Vivian's memories—whispered phone calls at midnight, late-night "emergency strategy sessions," and a sudden obsession with fresh cologne.

I walked into the walk-in closet.

The original Vivian owned rows of pastel dresses, pencil skirts, and four-inch heels designed to make her look like the demure trophy wife Ryan’s mother demanded.

I pushed them all aside.

Deep in the back, I found a pair of straight-leg dark jeans, a soft black crewneck sweater, and a pair of flat white sneakers. I laced the shoes tight, feeling the solid grip of rubber against the floorboards.

This human body was still weak, but balance began from the ground up. I didn't need heels to command a room.

Two hours later, I pushed through the revolving glass doors of Evans Enterprises.

The corporate lobby was an imposing fortress of polished granite and towering steel pillars, bustling with executives in dark suits and scurrying assistants clutching tablets.

I walked straight toward the security barrier.

"Excuse me, ma'am!"

A sharp voice cut through the hum of the lobby. The front-desk receptionist stood up, smoothing her tailored blazer. She wore a heavy layer of makeup and a tight, dismissive smile that told me she had judged my sneakers from thirty feet away.

"Can I help you?" she asked, her tone making it clear she had no intention of doing so.

"I'm going up to the top floor," I said.

The receptionist let out a faint, condescending breath. "The executive floor is restricted access. Do you have an appointment with Mr. Evans?"

"No."

"Then I'm afraid you can't go up," she replied smoothly, tapping her acrylic nails against the counter. "Company policy strictly states that all visitors, without exception, must be logged in advance. If you'd like to leave your name, I can pass it to his assistant."

I stepped closer to the marble desk, resting both palms flat against the polished surface.

"Pick up the phone," I said softly.

The receptionist blinked, taken aback by my tone. "Excuse me?"

"Call the CEO's office right now," I said, leaning in just enough to let the chill in my voice settle between us. "Put Ryan Evans on speaker. Ask him directly if he wants to tell the entire lobby that he's barring his legal wife from entering his building."

The woman’s smile vanished completely. Her eyes dropped to the platinum band on my left ring finger, then flicked up to my face.

She had seen Vivian before, but only as the timid, smiling woman who brought lunch boxes and waited quietly on the waiting room couch.

The woman standing in front of her now had eyes like an executioner.

"Mrs... Mrs. Evans," she stammered, the professional polish cracking in an instant. "I—I didn't recognize you. The casual clothes—"

"The gate," I commanded.

Her hands fumbled across the console. A loud electronic chime sounded, and the glass security turnstile slid open.

"Have a wonderful morning," she choked out.

I didn't answer. I stepped through the turnstile and took the private executive elevator straight to the forty-second floor.

When the silver doors opened, the quiet hum of the open-plan bullpen filled my ears. A dozen paralegals and senior analysts sat at glass cubicles, typing away in hushed concentration.

I bypassed the reception desk outside the corner suite.

The heavy frosted-glass door of the CEO's office was cracked open about an inch. A soft, breathless giggle drifted through the gap, followed by Ryan's low, relaxed chuckle.

I didn't knock.

I gripped the polished metal handle, pushed the door wide open, and let the brass latch strike the wall with a crisp, echoing crack.

The room froze.

Ryan was sitting in his high-backed leather executive chair, leaning back with a smug, self-satisfied grin.

Perched casually on the edge of his massive mahogany desk was a young woman in an emerald silk blouse and a short black skirt. Her legs were crossed, her body angled so close to Ryan that her perfume—jasmine and amber—saturated the entire room.

Her manicured fingers were resting directly against Ryan's chest, carefully pinning a gold company badge to his lapel.

At the sound of the door crashing against the wall, Bella flinched.

She gasped, pulling her hands back as if the metal had burned her, and scrambled off the desk. Her heel wobbled, but Ryan caught her elbow to steady her before remembering where he was.

When Ryan saw me standing in the doorway, the blood drained from his face, instantly replaced by dark, furious scarlet.

"Vivian?" Ryan snapped, standing up so abruptly his leather chair rolled back into the credenza. "What the hell are you doing here?"

Bella recovered faster than he did.

She took a quick, delicate step behind Ryan's shoulder, her wide brown eyes instantly shimmering with unshed tears. She bit her lower lip, pressing her hands together over her stomach in a picture-perfect display of fragile innocence.

"Oh, Mrs. Evans..." Bella's voice was soft, trembling, pitched just high enough to carry into the corridor. "Please don't get the wrong idea. I was only helping Mr. Evans fix his lapel pin before the board briefing. His hands were full with the quarterly reports."

I didn't move. I leaned my shoulder against the doorframe, crossed my arms over my chest, and simply watched the performance.

"If... if my presence made you uncomfortable, or if I caused a misunderstanding..." Bella sniffled, lowering her gaze with theatrical humility. "I can apologize. I really didn't mean any harm."

In the past, Vivian would have panicked at the sight of another woman crying. She would have waved her hands, swallowed her own humiliation, and reassured the girl that everything was fine just to stop Ryan from yelling.

I smiled, cold and sharp.

"Great," I said.

Bella blinked, the practiced tremor in her chin freezing mid-sob.

"You just said you can apologize," I continued, my voice calm, flat, and carrying effortlessly into the executive hallway. "Go ahead. I'm listening."

Dead silence fell over the office.

Beyond the glass door, heads began popping up from the cubicles. Keyboards stopped clicking. Two junior partners pretending to review files near the printer stopped dead in their tracks, their eyes darting between me and the intern.

Bella stood entirely paralyzed, her mouth slightly open, the fake tears clinging uselessly to her lashes. She looked entirely unprepared for an actual apology. The offer had been framed to make me look like an unreasonable, jealous shrew while painting her as the blameless victim.

Ryan yanked at his collar, glaring at the growing audience in the hallway.

"Vivian, stop this right now," Ryan said, trying to force an authoritative edge into his tone while keeping his voice down. "You’re acting absurd. She’s an intern. Don't come into my company and make an embarrassing scene over a harmless gesture."

He took a step toward me, raising his chin, as if expecting me to back down under his scowl.

I didn't step back. I looked directly into his eyes.

There was no warmth in my gaze. No desperate wife searching for affection. There was only the cold, unyielding weight of an Alpha sizing up a threat.

Ryan stopped mid-stride. A chill seemed to ripple down his spine, his words sticking in his throat before he could finish them.

The silence in the hallway stretched until it became suffocating.

Cornered by twenty pairs of watching eyes, Bella’s face burned bright red. She swallowed hard, forced her head down, and squeezed out a brittle, strangled whisper.

"I'm... I'm sorry, Mrs. Evans."

"Specifics, Bella," I said, not shifting an inch. "What exactly are you sorry for?"

Bella's breath hitched.

Beside her, the furious flush on Ryan’s face completely drained away, leaving his skin sick and pale.
