Chapter 4

The lumber arrived on a Tuesday.

I was at the site, reviewing electrical plans with the foreman, when the truck pulled up. Full load. Premium reclaimed oak. The exact specs I'd requested three weeks ago when the supplier told me it would take two months minimum.

The foreman frowned. "That's early."

"Very early," I said.

The driver climbed down, clipboard in hand. "Delivery for Stone. Where do you want it?"

I signed for it in a daze. Watched the crew unload plank after plank of perfect, beautiful wood that shouldn't have been here for another six weeks.

When the truck pulled away, I called the supplier.

"Hi, this is Serena Stone. I just received the oak order for the Prospect Avenue project—"

"Yes, Ms. Stone. Is there a problem?"

"No. I just... you told me two months."

A pause. "We were able to expedite. Sometimes things move faster than expected."

"Why?"

Another pause, longer this time. "I'm sorry, I don't have that information. Is the material acceptable?"

I looked at the stacks of lumber, still wrapped, waiting. "It's perfect."

"Wonderful. Please let us know if you need anything else."

I hung up and stood there, phone in hand, staring at wood that had somehow defied every timeline I'd been given.

Barnaby nudged my leg. I scratched behind his ears and tried to shake the feeling that someone, somewhere, had just moved a very large piece on a board I couldn't see.

---

The zoning issue appeared on a Thursday.

Margaret called me at seven in the morning, voice tight. "We have a problem. The city's flagging the second-floor expansion. They're saying it violates setback requirements."

I pulled up the plans on my laptop, heart sinking. "That's not possible. I checked the zoning code myself. Twice."

"I know. But someone filed a formal objection. Anonymous. Now we're stuck in review."

I closed my eyes. Anonymous. Which meant Hayes. Or someone Hayes paid. Another obstacle. Another delay. Another attempt to make me give up.

"How long?" I asked.

"Could be months. Maybe longer if they push it to a hearing."

I sat down on the edge of my bed. Barnaby put his head on my knee. "Okay. I'll figure it out."

"Serena—"

"I'll figure it out," I said again, and hung up.

I spent the day drafting responses. Pulling code citations. Building the case that the expansion was legal, compliant, exactly what the regulations allowed. I worked through lunch. Through dinner. Until my eyes burned and my hands cramped.

At midnight, I sent the documentation to Margaret and collapsed into bed.

The next morning, Margaret called again.

"It's resolved," she said.

I sat up. "What?"

"The objection was withdrawn. The city cleared us. We're approved."

I blinked. "How?"

"I have no idea. The notice just came through. No explanation. Just... cleared."

I stared at the wall. At the sketches pinned above my desk. At my mother's handwriting in the margins of her sketchbook.

"Serena? You there?"

"I'm here," I said quietly. "That's... good news."

"It's incredible news. Whatever you did, it worked."

But I hadn't done anything. Not anything that should have moved a bureaucratic review overnight.

I thought about the lumber. The expedited delivery. The anonymous resolution.

I thought about Asher Gray's card, still tucked in my wallet.

*When you're ready.*

---

The envelope arrived on a Monday.

Heavy stock. Hand-addressed. No return address.

Inside was a single card, embossed with the logo of the New York Architecture Foundation.

*You are cordially invited to the Annual Thanksgiving Charity Gala.*

And beneath it, in handwriting I was beginning to recognize:

*Strategic visibility. Your name back in the room. — A.G.*

I sat at my desk and stared at it for a long time.

Alana called that night. I told her about the invitation.

"Are you going?" she asked.

I hesitated. "I don't know. It feels like... accepting help. Again."

"It's not help," Alana said bluntly. "It's access. There's a difference. Hayes took your access away. This is you taking it back."

"With Asher Gray's name attached."

"So? You think every man at that gala got there alone? They all have backers. Mentors. Connections. The only difference is nobody questions them for it."

I closed my eyes. She was right. I knew she was right.

"This is not rescue, Serena," Alana said quietly. "This is your name back in the room. Don't let Hayes make you so afraid of being seen that you disappear."

I looked down at the invitation. At the careful, deliberate handwriting.

*Strategic visibility.*

Not rescue. Not control. Just... presence.

"Okay," I said. "I'll go."

---

I designed the dress myself.

No ruffles. No embellishment. Just clean lines and structure. Black silk, cut on the bias, with a neckline that suggested strength without apologizing for it. Architectural. Intentional.

I stood in front of the mirror in my small Brooklyn apartment and barely recognized the woman looking back.

She looked like someone who belonged in that room.

Barnaby sat at my feet, tail wagging.

"What do you think?" I asked him.

He barked once.

I smiled. "Yeah. Me too."

I picked up Asher's card from my desk and ran my thumb along the embossed edge.

Then I texted the number.

*I'm ready.*
