Chapter 2

The co-working space in Brooklyn smelled like coffee and ambition. I rented a desk by the window for three hundred dollars a month. No walls. No door. Just a folding table, a lamp, and a view of the street below.

I spread my mother's sketchbook open beside my laptop and started drawing.

The library project was small. A hundred-year-old building with bad lighting and a leaking roof. The non-profit's budget was almost insulting. But the bones were good. High ceilings. Original woodwork. Windows that could flood the space with light if I could figure out how to open it up.

I sketched by hand first, the way my mother had taught me. Pencil on paper. No software. No shortcuts. Just the design, raw and honest, before I translated it into something a contractor could build.

The work came back to me like muscle memory. The way a line could suggest movement. The way light could carve space. The way a room could hold people without making them feel small.

I worked before dawn. I worked after midnight. Barnaby slept under my desk, his warm weight against my feet.

For the first time in three years, I looked in the mirror and recognized myself.

---

Margaret Hale came to see the preliminary designs on a Tuesday morning. She was sixty, gray-haired, and had the no-nonsense energy of someone who had spent decades fighting for funding in rooms full of men who thought community spaces were expendable.

She stood at my desk and studied the drawings in silence. I waited. My hands were steady, but my chest felt tight.

Finally, she looked up. "This is exceptional."

I exhaled.

"I mean it," Margaret said. "This isn't just functional. It's beautiful. It honors the building. It serves the community. This is the kind of work that changes how people think about public space."

Something loosened in my chest. "Thank you."

"I'm going to make sure people know your name," Margaret said. "I don't care what Hayes Richardson's network thinks. You're the real thing, Serena."

I nodded, throat tight.

Margaret squeezed my shoulder and left.

I sat back down and kept working.

---

The construction site was a mess.

Dust everywhere. Exposed beams. Tarps covering half the floor. The crew was small but good. They listened when I explained why a wall needed to come down or why a window had to stay.

I was in the main reading room, reviewing structural plans with the foreman, when I heard heels on concrete.

I turned.

Hayes stood in the doorway, arms crossed, wearing a suit that cost more than my monthly rent. Iris was beside him in a cream-colored dress and designer heels that had no business on a construction site.

My stomach went cold, but my face stayed calm.

Hayes looked around the space, taking in the dust and scaffolding, and smiled. "So this is where you ended up."

I didn't answer.

He walked closer, shoes clicking. "A community library in Brooklyn. I have to say, Serena, I didn't think you'd fall this far this fast."

Iris touched his arm, eyes wide with performed sympathy. "It's so sad. She used to have such potential."

I watched them. Quiet. Patient. The way you watch something you're about to dismantle.

Hayes stopped a few feet away. "I heard you're working for a non-profit now. What's the budget on this? Fifty thousand? A hundred? That's what you left me for? This?"

"Hayes," I said quietly. "You need to leave."

He laughed. "I'm not going anywhere. This is a public site. I can stand here as long as I want."

I pulled a folded document from my bag and handed it to him.

He opened it, frowning. His face changed as he read. "A restraining order?"

"Effective immediately," I said. "You're not allowed within two hundred feet of me or any location where I'm working. That includes this site."

Iris's hand went to her necklace. Her fingers twisted the pendant.

Hayes's jaw tightened. "You can't be serious."

"I also filed a request with the IRS," I said. "An audit of every joint asset from our marriage. Every account. Every investment. Every transfer. If you or Iris come near me again, I'll expedite it. And I'll make sure every detail ends up in front of a federal investigator."

Hayes's face went white.

I held his gaze. "Leave. Now."

For a moment, he didn't move. Then he turned and walked toward the door, movements stiff and furious. Iris followed, heels clicking too fast, stumbling slightly on the uneven floor.

At the threshold, Hayes looked back. "This isn't over."

"I know," I said.

They left.

The foreman stood beside me, arms crossed, watching them go. "You okay?"

I folded the restraining order back into my bag. "I'm fine."

He nodded slowly. "That guy's your ex?"

"Yes."

"He's an asshole."

I almost smiled. "Yes."

The foreman turned back to the plans. "All right. Let's get back to work."

I picked up my pencil and kept drawing.
