The Mediterranean sun had been perfect all week, casting golden light across the pristine beaches of our romantic getaway. I'd been looking forward to this trip for months—Adam and I finally taking time away from our demanding careers, joined by his close-knit group of friends for what was supposed to be the perfect blend of romance and relaxation. But something had felt off since we arrived. Adam seemed distant, constantly checking his phone and exchanging meaningful glances with Saanvi that made my stomach twist with unease. When I tried to bring it up, he'd laugh it off, calling me paranoid, saying I was letting work stress get to me. Today, I'd decided to surprise him. The group had gone to explore some local markets, but I'd feigned a headache to slip away early. I wanted to set up something special in our room—maybe order room service, light some candles, remind us both why we were here together. My keycard beeped softly as I slipped into our hotel room, already imagining Adam's surprised smile when he returned. But the smile died on my lips before it could fully form.

Business Gala Betrayal Chapter 1

There, on our bed—our bed—was Adam. And Saanvi.

She was wearing his shirt, the same blue button-down I'd helped him pick out for this trip. Her dark hair was tousled, her lips swollen, and she was curled against his bare chest with an intimacy that made my blood turn to ice. Adam's arm was wrapped around her, his fingers tracing lazy patterns on her exposed thigh.

For a moment, time suspended itself. I stood frozen in the doorway, my mind struggling to process what I was seeing. This couldn't be real. This had to be some terrible mistake, some innocent explanation that would make sense if I just thought about it hard enough.

Then Adam looked up and saw me.

The guilt that flashed across his face told me everything I needed to know. This wasn't a mistake. This wasn't innocent. This was betrayal in its rawest, most devastating form.

"Skyler," he said, his voice carefully neutral as he sat up, making no move to push Saanvi away. "You're back early."

Saanvi stretched languidly, like a cat in the sun, and I saw the satisfied smirk playing at the corners of her mouth. She wasn't embarrassed. She wasn't sorry. She was triumphant.

"What is this?" The words came out as barely more than a whisper, my throat constricted with shock and rage.

Adam ran a hand through his disheveled hair, the same gesture I'd once found endearing. Now it made me sick. "Look, it's not what you think—"

"It's not what I think?" My voice cracked, rising in pitch. "I think I just walked in on my boyfriend in bed with another woman. Please, enlighten me about what I'm missing."

Saanvi finally sat up, pulling Adam's shirt more securely around herself—a possessive gesture that wasn't lost on me. "Skyler, you're overreacting. We were just talking, and I got cold, so Adam offered me his shirt. You're being paranoid."

The casual dismissal in her tone, the way she said my name like I was an inconvenience, sent fury coursing through my veins. "Talking? Half-naked in my boyfriend's bed?"

"You're being controlling," Adam said, his voice taking on that patronizing tone I'd grown to hate. "Saanvi needed comfort. Her ex just broke up with her, and she was upset. I was being a good friend."

"A good friend?" I laughed, but there was no humor in it. "Is that what we're calling it?"

Before either of them could respond, the door opened and the rest of Adam's friends poured in—Jake, Marcus, and Lily, all laughing about something from their market adventure. The laughter died when they saw the scene: me standing rigid by the door, Adam and Saanvi on the bed in various states of undress.

"Whoa," Jake said, his eyes darting between us. "Did we interrupt something?"

"Skyler's having one of her episodes," Adam said dismissively, and I felt something inside me shatter. "She walked in on Saanvi and me talking and immediately jumped to conclusions."

"That's not fair," Lily said, but her voice lacked conviction. "Skyler, maybe you should hear them out."

"Hear them out?" I stared at her in disbelief. "She's wearing his shirt. In our bed. How much more do I need to hear?"

Marcus stepped forward, his expression uncomfortable but resolute. "Look, Skyler, we've all seen how stressed you've been lately. Maybe you're reading too much into this. Saanvi's been having a hard time, and Adam was just being supportive."

The betrayal hit me like a physical blow. Not just from Adam, but from all of them. His entire friend group was closing ranks, protecting Saanvi, making me the villain in my own story.

"You're all defending this?" My voice was barely steady. "You're all going to stand there and tell me I'm imagining things?"

"We're telling you that friends help each other out," Jake said firmly. "And that's all this was. You're being paranoid and controlling, and honestly, it's not attractive."

The room spun around me. These people I'd considered friends, people I'd welcomed into my life, were gaslighting me. Making me question my own eyes, my own sanity.

I looked at Adam one more time, searching his face for any sign of remorse, any indication that he would choose me over this charade. Instead, I saw only cold calculation and the uncomfortable realization that he'd already made his choice.

"We're done," I said quietly, my voice steady despite the earthquake happening inside my chest. "Adam, we're done."

I turned and walked toward the door, my legs moving on autopilot. Behind me, I heard Saanvi's soft laughter and Adam calling my name, but I didn't stop. I couldn't stop.

I had to get out of here. I had to get home. I had to get as far away from this nightmare as possible.

But as I reached for my suitcase to pack, my hands shaking with rage and heartbreak, I discovered that the nightmare was just beginning.

My passport was gone. My driver's license, my credit cards, everything that could get me home—all of it had vanished from where I'd carefully stored it in my luggage.

And in that moment, standing alone in a foreign country with nothing but the clothes on my back and the devastating realization of how thoroughly I'd been betrayed, I understood that this hadn't been a moment of weakness or a mistake.

This had been planned.
