My Husband Sacrificed Our Daughter For His First Love, So I Buried Them Both Chapter 1

I checked Lily’s custom blue headphones one last time. "If it gets too loud, stay with Daddy," I whispered. My husband, Andrew, smiled. "I’ve got her. She’s my daughter too." He took our autistic seven-year-old to the Winter Lights Parade while I worked. Thirty minutes later, a notification popped up on my phone. It was a livestream from Andrew's childhood friend, Rebecca. My breath hitched. Rebecca was laughing on a VIP balcony, wearing Lily’s custom blue headphones. "Andrew is just so sweet for lending me these," she told her followers. I called Andrew's phone. It went straight to voicemail. Then, I heard the fireworks start early through Rebecca's video. I watched the crowd surge in the background. My husband had taken the only thing protecting our daughter and left her alone in a crushing crowd to comfort another woman. Now, I packed my bags to leave him forever.

I stood on our front stoop one last time that morning, the wooden steps cool under my feet as I made sure Lily's blue noise-canceling headphones sat perfectly in place. The bright identification sticker on the side still looked fresh, her name written in her careful seven-year-old letters. Next to them sat the small emergency bag, zipped tight with wipes, a spare outfit, her favorite rabbit doll, a pair of spare foam earplugs, her prescribed calming medication, and a few snacks she liked. Lily had been nervous about the Blue Whale Float Parade all morning, whispering that loud noises made her want to hide.

"Mommy, if I put these on and have the bag, I can watch the parade but the bangs won't hurt my ears," she said, her small hands tugging at the headphones.

I knelt down, smoothing her hair back from her face. "That's right, baby. The headphones help with that. And Andrew is taking you. He promised he'd stay with you the whole time."

My voice stayed even, but inside my chest felt tight. Lily had cried earlier when the fireworks popped at the last parade, pressing her face into my neck. She was only seven, after all, and the parade meant everything to her because of the giant blue whale float.

Andrew stepped out from the side of the yard then, his presence steady in a way that still left me wondering about the past. He wore the same calm expression he always did when he talked about Lily. "She's my daughter too, Grace. I promise I'll keep her safe. Don't worry about a thing. Go to work, we'll be fine."

Those words settled over me like a weight I couldn't argue with. I gave Lily one more hug, adjusted the headphones so they covered her ears just right, and kissed her cheek. "Be good for Daddy, okay? Mommy loves you."

She nodded, the headphones muffling her voice a little. "Love you too, Mommy. See you after the parade."

I watched Andrew help her into the car, the parade flyers on the dash, and then I drove off to my office, my shoulders finally relaxing for the first time that day.

Thirty minutes later the push notification lit up my phone in the office. I was reviewing reports when it buzzed, and the name on the screen made my stomach drop. Rebecca's brand live stream. I tapped it open without thinking, the screen filling with her image. She stood in front of the camera, smiling the way she always did for her followers, her voice bright as she talked about the headphones she was wearing around her neck.

The blue ones. Exactly like Lily's. The same identification sticker was visible, catching the light under the live video feed. My hands went numb on the keyboard.

I grabbed my phone and dialed Andrew's number right away. It rang once, twice, then went straight to voicemail. "Hey, this is Andrew, leave a message." His voice filled the line, familiar and cold at the same time. I stood there staring at the screen, the office noise fading around me.

Just as I was about to hang up, the live stream shifted. A loud boom suddenly exploded in the background audio, someone having set off a firework early. The crowd in the video started to panic, people shouting and pushing forward, the sound of feet scrambling and voices rising in fear filling the air.

"Lily, what's happening?" I whispered to myself, my fingers already fumbling for my car keys. I shoved the phone into my pocket and rushed out of the office, the door clicking shut behind me as I hurried through the parking lot.

The drive to the city center blurred together, my hands tight on the wheel. My phone rang again as I pulled onto the highway. It was the hospital emergency department. "Ma'am, please come in right away. There's been a stampede at the Blue Whale Float Parade."

The words landed like a punch. "My daughter was there," I said, my voice cracking. I hung up and kept driving, the radio a distant hum I barely heard.

When I reached the hospital the emergency room was already chaos. A nurse checked my name and told me Lily hadn't survived and that they were bringing her body down. I pushed past the crowd and went straight to the area outside the morgue. The door was closed, heavy and final, a sign on it that read Family Only. I stood there, my hands pressing against the cool metal, unable to see inside. Lily wasn't there yet, and the thought of never having that last goodbye tore through me.

I waited, my feet planted on the cold tile, every second stretching out. Then footsteps echoed behind me. At the end of the corridor Andrew stood there, his face pale and drawn, his shoulders slumped in a way I had never seen before. He looked up as I approached, his eyes red-rimmed and empty.

Just then Rebecca appeared from the side, breathless, her cheeks flushed. She was still wearing Lily's blue headphones around her neck, the identification sticker catching the light. She rushed over to us, tears already spilling down her face, and in a trembling voice said, "I only borrowed them for a few minutes."

The words hung there in the air between us, heavy with everything that wasn't said.
