Bride of Revenge Chapter 1

Chapter 1: Public Betrayal

“Sign the papers and get the f*ck out of my house.”

His voice was soft. It was steady and monotone the same pitch he employed when finalizing unsuccessful takeovers. The words pierced the stillness of the Valerius Penthouse like a blade slicing through silk shattering the peace Eliza Thorne had guarded for three years.

Damon Valerius avoided her gaze altogether. He rested against the dark quartz countertop, his stance relaxed yet filled with ruthless assurance. He flung a pile of documents—divorce papers—onto the twelve-foot marble surface. They came down with a gentle, mocking thump next to a vase of white orchids untouched.

Through the floor-, to-ceiling windows Veridian City sparkled in the darkness, a labyrinth of influence and desire. This evening it seemed like a trap.

Eliza remained motionless. She donned the ivory dress selected by his grandfather’s attendants, the type of attire anticipated from the spouse of a man in power. At once it seemed like an outfit, for a part she had already been dismissed from.

Damon had returned. Three weeks earlier he had been saved from the brink of death restored through the intensive medical treatment that money could provide. The first definite choice he made was to wipe out their entire history.

He let go of the bar. Moved in a gradual curve around the table restlessness evident, in each step. When his gaze eventually locked with hers—ice-blue. As piercing as shattered glass—they felt cold and detached devoid of any warmth she had once hoped for.

“Are you looking for a lawyer, Eliza?" His voice remained calm and polished, the one he employed during critical negotiations. "The settlement is quite favorable. The trust fund. The two Hamptons estates. The quarterly payout for half a decade. Plenty, for a woman who contributed her family name.”

The message was obvious. The debt had been cleared. She represented a deal, a risk that had been compensated.

Eliza avoided glancing at the documents. Instead she locked eyes with him. Maintained the gaze. For three years she had been the barrier preventing his family from falling. She had weathered murmurs, media scrutiny and the harsh condemnation of a town convinced she was a fortune-hunting spouse wed to an ailing man. She wasn't about to fail at this moment.

“My family name " she murmured softly "is the reason your grandfather’s scheme succeeded. It’s what kept Valerius Capital stable during the crash before your accident.. Did his last orders lose their significance the instant you regained consciousness?”

She brought the truth back to his attention. Their union had served as protection. Half a decade earlier when the international economy collapsed and the Thorne holdings almost sank their secret connections nearly dragged Valerius Capital down well. It was solely the families merger—mandated by the ailing Grandfather Valerius—that rescued them both.

Damon sneered. A brief icy noise saturated with disdain. He raised a silk napkin. Brushed away an unseen smudge, from the marble as though even the atmosphere repulsed him.

“My grandfather was safeguarding his possessions from the bankruptcy of your family. He sought a demonstration of solidarity. You delivered it. Your actions were not driven by loyalty. They were driven by survival.”

He walked over to the window, the city lights casting him as a figure, against the glass. "You stayed on the line while I was asleep.. In exchange you leveraged my name to stay afloat. The debt is settled. As soon as I woke up, your value vanished.”

He didn’t look back. His tone held the same cold definitiveness.

“You acted like an insurance contract, Eliza.. That contract has been terminated.”

The strike struck hard like iron, against the chest. The pair of Valerius attorneys—Ms. Keller. Meticulous and Mr. Finch, lanky and quiet—remained motionless as observers of her public downfall.

Eliza shut her eyes briefly to take a breath. The marriage had exhausted her. She trusted its significance. Safeguard the legacy. Maintain the stance. I wish for his healing. Honor the man she came to know through tales and her fathers sorrow.

However Damon noticed none of those things. To his eyes she was a woman who fought her way into a survival contract.

He was unaware of the reality. That she was compelled into this marriage by the individuals who destroyed her family.

The ache, within her, didn't shatter her. It toughened. It turned icy and pierced a diamond emerging through strain.

She moved closer to the table, her pale dress gliding softly across the marble. She ignored the settlement. Instead she took the pen. Wrote: Eliza Thorne.

Her handwriting was consistent and confident. She pushed the documents over to Mr. Finch.

“I have no interest in the Hamptons estates or the trust fund " she stated quietly. She raised her gaze to Damon’s back resembling a statue of pride. "Inform Mr. Valerius that I insist on the instant dissolution of the marriage agreement. Keep the money. I can manage on my own.”

Damon shifted his gaze, a flash of surprise crossing his expression. He hadn’t anticipated autonomy. He had anticipated pleading, anxiety, reliance.

“Is this meant to convey anything?" he inquired. "Some effort, at respectability? A show of ethics?”

Eliza maintained his gaze. Gray eyes locking with ice. She offered a dry smile.

“No, Mr. Valerius. I’m not claiming the superior position. I’m just severing all connections. You believed you were terminating a policy. You weren’t.”

She moved toward the elevator abandoning the orchids, the marble and the heaviness of his disdain. She did not glance back.

When the elevator doors shut, isolating her from the penthouse the guise of the wife disappeared. Eliza rested her head on the wall. Her breath escaped in a measured flow.

He believes this has ended. He believes he has prevailed.

“You initiated a conflict, Damon " she murmured to the image of the woman staring back at her. ". I alone understand precisely where to hit.”

Her initial gesture of rebellion was fulfilled. The five years she sacrificed were not lost—they became wisdom. Influence. Opportunity. Tactics.

He had broken the woman who was standing next to him.

At this moment he was set to confront the foe he created.

You think you ended the desperate girl, she thought. But I’m done being who you needed. Now I make them pay.
