Chapter 2

Back home in the villa on Long Island, everything was a memory of her mother. Her real mother, not a replacement like Brenda. Her mother's paintings, vibrant and full of life, hung on the walls, a stark contrast to the gray numbness inside Eleanor.

She moved like an automaton, pulling a few simple dresses from her closet.

Her hand reached for her phone. The screen lit up with a picture of her younger brother, Leo. His bright, sunny smile was her only anchor in this storm. He was her pride, a brilliant student at Yale.

She dialed his number. It rang twice, then went to voicemail.

A text message popped up. It was from her father.

"Before you do anything foolish, think about Leo's tuition. And his future."

The words hit her like a physical blow. Her breath caught in her throat. It was a threat, a leash binding her.

She stormed out of her room and down to the study. Richard was sitting there, calmly sipping a glass of scotch, a cigar smoldering in an ashtray.

Eleanor slammed her phone down on the polished mahogany desk. "What does this mean? What are you going to do to Leo?"

Richard took a slow drag from his cigar, exhaling a deliberate ring of smoke. His voice was chillingly calm. "Leo's trust fund is under my control. With one word from me, his tuition for next semester disappears. He'll be expelled. His life will be ruined."

Eleanor trembled with a rage that felt white-hot. "He's your son! How could you do that to him?"

"He is my son," Richard said, rising from his chair. He walked around the desk to stand over her, his presence suffocating. "The future heir of Hayes Industries. It is my duty to secure his future. And you, as his sister, have an obligation to pave the way for him."

Brenda swept into the room then, her face a mask of false sympathy. "Eleanor, your father is just doing what's best for you. What's so bad about marrying into the Carlisle family? Countless girls would kill for that opportunity."

The sight of them, a perfectly rehearsed duet of cruelty, made Eleanor's stomach turn.

She knew it was useless. Any resistance was futile. They had her by her one and only weakness: Leo.

For Leo, she would do anything.

She took a deep, shuddering breath, pushing down the fury, the grief, the despair. Her eyes became vacant. "Fine. I'll marry him."

Hearing her surrender, Richard and Brenda exchanged a look of quiet satisfaction.

"That's the right choice," Richard said, his tone softening now that he had won. "As long as you behave, nothing will happen to Leo."

Eleanor didn't look at them again. She turned and walked back upstairs, her spine ramrod straight, like a solitary tree in a blizzard that refused to bend.

Back in her room, she shut the door, her body slumping against it.

She had lost, completely and utterly.

But she didn't cry. The tears had run dry yesterday.

She deliberately reopened her suitcase.

She chose simple, understated clothes in muted colors, but made of the finest materials. They were her silent armor.

She carefully placed a sapphire necklace, a gift from her late mother, into a jewelry box. It was her source of strength.

She picked up her phone again. This time, she didn't look at Leo's picture. She opened the web browser and typed "Julian Carlisle."

The screen filled with headlines about his accident, his paralysis, his rumored cruelty. The accompanying photos showed a dark-haired man in a wheelchair, his face grim and shadowed.

But another, less prominent article caught her eye. "Power Struggle Intensifies within Carlisle Group, Eldest Son Donovan Carlisle Poised to Win."

A plan began to form in the back of her mind, a tiny, intricate seed.

She wasn't just going to marry him. She was going to survive in that family of predators.

She would protect Leo. And one day, she would take back everything that belonged to her and her mother.
