Chapter 2

Midnight in Valorian City felt different.

The neon lights dimmed into darker shades, the streets emptied, and the city's pulse slowed to something deeper-heavier-like the world itself was holding its breath.

Alec Draven stood at the floor‑to‑ceiling windows of his penthouse, hands in his pockets, watching the skyline. A low storm gathered on the horizon, lightning flickering silently behind the clouds.

He wasn't nervous.

Alec Draven never gets nervous.

But anticipation?

That was new.

Mira would arrive tonight.

If she had the courage to come.

If she wasn't a liar.

If she wasn't another enemy's spy.

If she wasn't playing a game she couldn't survive.

But Alec had seen many things in his lifetime-fear, greed, ambition, betrayal.

And nothing about Mira matched any of them.

She had been calm.

Sharp.

Unpredictable.

A flame that burned quietly but dangerously.

And that bothered him.

He didn't like what he couldn't control.

A soft beep cut through the room.

Alec's jaw lifted slightly.

Penthouse elevator access.

One guest.

No guards.

She came.

Of course she did.

Alec pressed a button, unlocking the private elevator.

The doors slid open with a soft chime.

Mira stepped out.

Black coat.

Hair tousled by the wind.

Eyes steady-even in the presence of Valorian's most dangerous man.

She didn't look afraid.

Alec didn't smile, but something in him loosened.

"You came," he said.

"I said I would."

He moved closer, steps slow, deliberate. The penthouse lights framed him like a shadow carved out of power-broad shoulders, tailored black shirt, sleeves rolled to reveal strong forearms and veins like dark lines.

He looked nothing like the man at the ballroom.

Here, he was sharper.

Colder.

More dangerous.

Mira sensed it.

And she still didn't step back.

"Take off your coat," Alec said.

Mira raised a brow. "No greeting?"

"This is the greeting."

Her lips twitched, amused. "Direct."

"I don't do small talk."

"And what do you do?"

He stopped right in front of her.

"Control."

Her breath hitched-barely, but he caught it.

Mira slipped off her coat, revealing a simple fitted black dress beneath. Nothing extravagant. Nothing expensive. And yet she looked more mesmerizing than any jeweled socialite in the Celestial Tower.

Alec's eyes swept over her once.

Slow.

Possessive.

Claiming.

"Good," he murmured. "You understand simplicity."

Mira tilted her head. "You don't like complicated women?"

"I don't like distractions."

"And what am I?"

He reached up and brushed a strand of hair from her cheek-slow, intentional, letting his fingertips skim her skin.

"A question I haven't answered yet."

Her pulse quickened. He heard it. Felt it.

But Mira held his gaze. "So... what happens now?"

Alec stepped past her, walking toward the glass dining table.

"Now," he said, "we talk."

Mira blinked-almost surprised. "Talk?"

"You offered yourself to me behind closed doors." He turned, leaning against the table, arms crossed. "I don't accept blind offers."

She exhaled softly. "I expected something different."

Alec's brow lifted. "Did you want me to throw you against a wall?"

Mira's cheeks warmed-but she didn't retreat. "I wanted you to act like Alec Draven."

Alec pushed off the table and walked toward her-slow, stalking, predatory.

"Careful," he warned, voice low. "You don't know what that means."

"Then teach me."

Lightning flashed behind them.

He stopped inches from her, his breath brushing hers.

"Why did you come tonight, Mira?"

She hesitated for the first time.

Not out of fear...

But truth.

"I wanted to see if I was right," she whispered.

"About what?"

"You." Her gaze dropped briefly to his lips. "About the kind of man you are when no one's watching."

"And?" he demanded.

"You're worse," she said softly. "And I like it."

Alec's control snapped-just a little.

His hand slid to her waist. Slow. Firm. Testing.

"And what do you think happens if you like a man like me?"

Mira stepped closer, bodies almost touching.

"I break," she whispered.

"Or you do."

Alec's breath stilled.

Bold woman.

Dangerous woman.

His kind of woman.

He lifted her chin between two fingers.

"Let's get one thing straight," he murmured. "If you walk deeper into this arrangement...-"

"I already have." She said while cutting him off...

His eyes darkened.

"Then understand this," he said, voice like velvet-wrapped steel. "I don't share. I don't pretend. And I don't play gently."

"I don't want gentle."

Her honesty pulsed between them, electric.

Alec's thumb brushed her lower lip.

"Tomorrow," he whispered, "things change."

"Why tomorrow?" Mira breathed.

"Because tonight..." he leaned in, lips ghosting hers, "I want to know if you lie."

"About what?" She asked...

"About wanting me." He said...

A tremor ran through her.

And then- She replied.....

"I don't lie," Mira said. "Not about desire."

Alec's grip tightened on her waist.

The storm outside cracked open.

Inside the penthouse, tension ignited-dangerous, intimate, and consuming.

Alec's voice dropped to a command.

"Then come deeper."

And Mira did.

Without hesitation.

Without fear.

Into the beginning of a bond that would destroy kingdoms.

Or build one.

Together.

I woke up in a bedroom that screamed old money, but the body I occupied felt sluggish and fragile. I was now Chris Olson, a man known as a pathetic failure who spent his marriage groveling at his wife's feet for a single look of approval. Elizabeth didn't even wait for me to clear my head before she threw the divorce papers on the nightstand. She stood there in her silk robe, eyes cold as ice, demanding I sign them before breakfast so she could finally go public with her "White Moonlight," Greg. "You're walking away with nothing," she snapped, her voice full of the disgust she'd harbored for years. She reminded me that my family had disowned me and that I'd be on the streets within a week without her charity. As I sat up, a metallic, garlic-like scent on my breath confirmed a terrifying truth: the Olson family hadn't just disowned me; they had been micro-dosing me with arsenic for years. They wanted me weak and mentally unstable so they could split the inheritance without a fight. The original Chris would have cried and begged for her to stay, but I just looked at her like she was a target. I realized then that my "loving" family and my "faithful" wife had been watching me die in slow motion, and neither of them had lifted a finger to stop it. I signed the papers without reading a single line and walked out with nothing but a duffel bag and a rusted sedan. I didn't need her alimony; I had already called her greatest rival, Adelia Cherry, to discuss a merger that would rock the city. "I'm not here to save this marriage," I told Elizabeth as I moved into the mansion right next door to hers. "I'm here to bury it, along with everyone who thought they could poison me and get away with it."
