Chapter 2

Marcus broke through the trees in a partial shift, golden fur rippling along his arms and the back of his neck, claws already extended. His eyes locked on Kael's hand still resting against my cheek. The sound that left his throat was not a warning. It was a promise of violence.

Kael did not move. His thumb stayed exactly where it was, warm against my cold skin, as if the approaching Alpha were nothing more than weather.

"Take your hand off her." Marcus's voice came out rough, layered with the growl of his wolf. Rain ran down his face. His chest rose and fell too fast.

Kael's gaze slid to him with lazy interest. "You're late."

Marcus stepped closer. The air thickened with the sharp metallic scent of two dominant males refusing to yield. My own wolf pressed hard against my ribs, torn between the fading bond that still tugged toward Marcus and the darker, heavier pull that had woken the moment Kael touched me.

I should have stepped back. Pack law demanded it. Mate bond demanded it. My boots stayed rooted in the wet needles.

Marcus's eyes flicked to mine for the first time. Something raw and ugly moved behind the gold. "Elara. Come here."

Kael's fingers tightened the smallest fraction. Not enough to hurt. Just enough to remind me they were still there.

"She's not a dog," Kael said quietly. "She doesn't come when you whistle."

Marcus bared his teeth. "She's my mate."

"Is she?" Kael finally lowered his hand, but only to rest it lightly at the side of my neck, fingers brushing the cold mark Marcus had left months ago. The contact sent a slow, dangerous heat under my skin. "This mark is dying. I can smell it. So can every wolf within a mile."

Marcus lunged.

Kael moved faster. One second he stood beside me; the next he had Marcus by the throat, slamming him back against a pine hard enough that bark cracked. Marcus's claws raked across Kael's forearm. Blood welled dark against pale skin. Kael didn't flinch.

"You left her alone," Kael said, voice still almost soft. "You brought another woman into her home. You let her walk the woods at night like she was already discarded. And now you want to play the protective mate?"

Marcus's eyes burned. He shoved hard, breaking the hold, and the two of them collided again in a flurry of fists and partial shifts. The sound of it was wet and brutal-flesh on flesh, the tear of claws, the heavy thud of bodies hitting trees. Rain plastered their hair to their faces. Blood mixed with water on the forest floor.

I stood frozen, heart slamming so hard I could feel it in my teeth. Every instinct screamed to run, yet my feet refused. My wolf watched with a strange, hungry stillness.

Marcus landed a solid blow to Kael's jaw. Kael answered by driving a knee into Marcus's ribs hard enough that the air left him in a harsh grunt. They broke apart, circling, chests heaving.

"She's mine," Marcus snarled.

Kael wiped blood from his split lip with the back of his hand and smiled without humor. "Then why does she smell more like me right now than you?"

The words hit harder than any claw. Marcus's head snapped toward me. The look in his eyes was pure betrayal mixed with something that might have been fear.

I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.

Kael took one step closer to me without taking his eyes off Marcus. "Decide, little ghost. Stay with the male who forgot you existed, or walk with the one who found you when you were already halfway gone."

Marcus's voice cracked. "Elara. Don't. He's the enemy. He's been circling our borders for months. This is what he wants-to take what's mine and start a war."

Kael's laugh was low. "I don't need a war to take what's already slipping through your fingers."

Thunder rolled again, closer this time. The rain thickened, turning the clearing into a curtain of cold water. My clothes clung to my skin. I could feel every drop, every heartbeat, every frayed strand of the bond that still connected me to Marcus and the new, darker thread that had begun to wind around my spine the moment Kael touched me.

Marcus held out his hand. It trembled slightly. "Come home. We'll talk. I'll send Lila away if that's what you need. Just... come home."

The offer should have meant something. Three months ago it would have. Now it felt like a bandage offered after the wound had already gone septic.

Kael said nothing. He simply waited, rain running down the hard lines of his chest, blood still dripping from the scratches on his arm. His eyes never left my face.

I took one step.

Not toward Marcus.

Toward the space between them.

Marcus's expression fractured. "Elara-"

"I can't go back to being a ghost," I said. My voice sounded strange to my own ears-quiet, steady, and nothing like the soft woman who had scrubbed floors while another woman sat at my table. "Not even if you send her away. Not even if you beg."

Marcus flinched as if I had struck him.

Kael's gaze sharpened. Something fierce and pleased moved behind the slate of his eyes.

Marcus's wolf surged forward. Golden fur exploded along his arms. His voice dropped into a full growl. "If you walk away with him, you are packless. You are mate-less. You are nothing."

Kael stepped fully in front of me, shoulders blocking Marcus from view. "She's already more than nothing. She's the woman you were too careless to keep."

Marcus charged again.

This time Kael didn't just defend. He met the attack head-on, and the two of them went down hard, rolling through mud and pine needles. Claws flashed. Teeth snapped. The scent of blood grew thicker. I heard the wet sound of a bite landing, the sharp cry of pain that followed.

I should have run. Every rule of the pack said to run when Alphas fought. Instead I stayed, rain soaking through to my skin, watching the male who had once been my entire world try to kill the male who had looked at me like I still mattered.

Marcus got the upper hand for a moment, pinning Kael and driving claws toward his throat. Kael twisted with terrifying speed, reversed their positions, and slammed Marcus's head into the ground hard enough that the Alpha went still for two full heartbeats.

Kael rose, breathing hard, blood running from a cut above his eye. He looked at me over his shoulder.

"Last chance to choose the safe path," he said.

There was no safe path left.

I walked to him.

Marcus pushed himself up on one elbow, eyes glassy with pain and something worse. "Elara. Please."

I didn't look at him again. I kept my eyes on Kael's face as I stopped in front of him. Rain plastered my hair to my cheeks. My heart hammered so violently I thought it might crack a rib.

Kael lifted one blood-streaked hand and brushed a wet strand of hair from my mouth. The touch was careful. Possessive. Final.
