Chapter 1

The penthouse was all glass and steel and golden light. Three hundred people filled the space—producers in tailored suits, actresses in jewel-toned silk, studio executives holding champagne flutes like scepters. The wrap party for Rafael's latest film. His biggest yet. I stood near the windows, watching the city sprawl below, and felt the hum of success in the air. It should have felt like mine too. I'd been there for every late-night script revision, every investor meeting, every moment Rafael doubted himself and needed someone to tell him he was brilliant.

But I wasn't on the call sheet. I wasn't in the credits. I was just Keira—the woman who appeared at his apartment with takeout at midnight, who knew how he liked his coffee, who never asked to be introduced.

The music dipped. Rafael's voice cut through the crowd, amplified by the microphone he'd taken from the DJ booth. "Ladies and gentlemen, if I could have your attention."

I turned. He stood on the raised platform near the bar, backlit like a king addressing his court. His tuxedo fit perfectly. I'd picked it up from the tailor last week.

"I want to take a moment," Rafael continued, his smile wide and easy, "to celebrate someone very special."

My chest tightened. For one foolish second, I thought—

"Estrella Moreno," he said, extending his hand toward the crowd. "Come up here."

She emerged from the cluster of starlets near the champagne tower. Twenty-four years old, legs for days, hair like spilled ink. The female lead of Rafael's film. She moved through the crowd like she owned it, and when she reached the platform, Rafael pulled her close, his arm around her waist.

I stopped breathing.

"Estrella gave everything to this role," Rafael said, his voice warm, intimate, like he was sharing a secret with three hundred of his closest friends. "Her dedication, her talent—she deserves to be celebrated."

The crowd applauded. Estrella beamed, her hand resting on Rafael's chest.

Then Rafael's eyes found me across the room. "Keira," he called. "Come here."

Every head turned. I felt the weight of three hundred gazes, the sudden hush as conversations died mid-sentence. My heels—red-soled Louboutins I'd bought two years ago to celebrate my first day on a set Rafael had promised me, a promise that evaporated a week later—clicked against the marble floor as I walked forward. My custom Valentino gown, midnight blue with a fitted bodice and a skirt that moved like water, whispered with each step.

I climbed the platform. Rafael's smile didn't reach his eyes. It never did when he looked at me in public.

"Keira," he said, his tone light, conversational, like he was asking me to pass the salt, "I think Estrella would look stunning in those shoes. Don't you?"

The room went silent. Not the comfortable silence of anticipation. The stunned silence of a crowd watching something they couldn't look away from.

I looked down at my shoes. The red soles gleamed under the lights. I'd worn them tonight because they made me feel like I had something to celebrate too. Seven years with Rafael. Seven years of building his empire from the shadows, of being the woman who asked for nothing and gave everything.

"Take them off," Rafael said. Still smiling. Still casual. "Give them to her."

My hands didn't shake. That surprised me. I reached down, slipped off the left shoe, then the right. The marble was cold beneath my bare feet. I held the Louboutins out to Estrella.

She took them slowly, her eyes locked on mine. Her smile was a blade. "Thank you," she murmured, just loud enough for me to hear. "I'll take such good care of them."

Rafael wasn't finished.

"And the dress," he added, his voice smooth as silk. "That Valentino is stunning. I think Estrella deserves something stunning tonight, don't you?"

I heard someone gasp. A woman near the bar whispered something sharp and urgent to the man beside her. A phone camera flashed somewhere in the crowd.

I reached behind my neck. Found the zipper. Pulled it down with slow, methodical precision. The gown slipped from my shoulders, pooled at my feet in a waterfall of midnight silk. I stood in my slip—simple, black, nothing special—and picked up the dress. I folded it once, carefully, and handed it to Estrella.

She accepted it with both hands, her smile widening. "Perfect," she breathed.

I looked at Rafael. His expression was pleased, satisfied, like he'd just closed a deal. He thought this was power. He thought I would break.

Inside my chest, something went very, very quiet.

I picked up my clutch from where I'd set it on the edge of the platform. Turned. Walked down the steps, across the marble floor, through the crowd that parted like water. No one spoke. No one stopped me.

I reached the elevator, pressed the button, and stepped inside. As the doors slid shut, I caught one last glimpse of the party—Rafael's arm around Estrella, her holding my shoes like trophies, the crowd already turning back to their champagne and their gossip.

The elevator descended. I stared at my reflection in the polished steel doors. Barefoot. Half-dressed. Alone.

And for the first time in seven years, absolutely certain.
