Chapter 1

Three days before New Year’s Eve, I found the message.

His tablet was buzzing on the marble island in our Fifth Avenue penthouse. I glanced down, expecting an email from Harper Enterprises. Instead, a preview popped up on the screen.

*The baby kicked today. Can't wait for our island trip, Landon.*

It was from Aitana Mendez. My executive assistant. The woman I had personally interviewed, hired, and mentored.

The room suddenly felt very cold.

A moment later, Landon walked out of the walk-in closet. He looked immaculate in his charcoal suit. He was the billionaire CEO everyone in Manhattan feared, the man who had once knelt outside my family home in the Seattle rain for three days just to prove his devotion to me.

I picked up the tablet with shaking hands. “What is this, Landon?”

He didn't freeze. He didn't blink. He walked over to the full-length mirror and casually adjusted his silver cufflinks.

“You went through my messages,” he said. His voice was smooth and even, like he was opening a board meeting.

“Is Aitana pregnant with your child?” My voice cracked. I pressed a hand against my own stomach. I was four months pregnant with our first baby. “Tell me the truth.”

He turned around slowly. There was no guilt in his eyes. There was only a cold, tired irritation.

“Yes,” he said.

My breath caught in my throat. “How could you do this to us? You swore you loved me.”

Landon sighed. He looked at me like I was a child failing a simple test.

“Loving only one person for an entire lifetime is too suffocating to bear.”

The words hit me like a slap across the face. My world didn’t just crack; it turned to ash.

“End it,” I whispered, tears burning my eyes. “Fire her today. Send her away, or I'm calling my lawyer.”

Landon let out a dry, humorless chuckle. He stepped closer, towering over me.

“You won't call anyone, Leila. Harper Enterprises is going public next quarter. The board needs stability. Society expects the golden couple.” He smoothed down his lapels. “We are flying to the private island in the Bahamas tomorrow for the New Year's party. We will smile for the cameras. And Aitana is coming with us.”

I stared at him in disbelief. “You want me to spend a holiday with your mistress?”

“She is my assistant,” he said flatly. “She handles my schedule. It’s non-negotiable. You play your part, Leila. Or you lose everything.”

He grabbed his coat and walked out, the heavy front door clicking shut behind him.

I stood in the silence of the massive apartment. My hands wouldn't stop shaking. I had no prenup that favored me, no board seats, and no family wealth to fight the Harper dynasty. I was alone, trapped, and carrying his child.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the one person who truly loved me.

“Mom?” I said when she picked up.

“Leila? What’s wrong?” Grace Gordon’s voice was warm, but sharp with motherly instinct.

“Can you come with me to the Bahamas tomorrow?” I tried to keep my voice steady, but a tiny shudder slipped through. “Landon chartered a jet for New Year’s. I… I need you there.”

There was a long pause on the other end. My mother had never completely trusted Landon’s smooth charm. But she heard the quiet terror in my voice.

“I’ll pack my heart medication, baby,” she said softly. “I’m coming.”

The tropical heat hit us the moment we stepped off the jet in Nassau. The sky was bright blue, and the ocean looked like glass. But to me, the resort felt like an open-air prison.

The cruelty started right at check-in.

Landon gave Aitana the grand suite directly connected to his own in the central compound. My mother and I were assigned a small, damp bungalow down a winding stone path, far from the main house.

“He’s doing this on purpose,” my mother muttered under her breath as we unpacked her nitroglycerin pills onto a nightstand. Her face was pale from the flight. “Leila, what has that man done to you?”

“Nothing, Mom,” I lied, forcing a smile. “Just business stress. Let’s get ready for dinner.”

Dinner was served on an open terrace overlooking the dark sea. Torches flickered in the evening breeze. Other wealthy guests were already laughing and drinking champagne at the long mahogany table.

Then, Landon arrived.

He didn't walk in alone. Aitana was beside him, wearing a tight silk slip dress that subtly showed off her slight bump. Landon’s hand rested comfortably on the small of her back, guiding her forward with unmistakable intimacy.

Aitana caught my eye. She touched her collarbone and gave me a faint, victorious smirk.

The guests fell silent for a split second, exchanging knowing glances, before resuming their polite chatter. Landon pulled out the chair directly across from me and seated Aitana. Then he sat beside her, never once looking at me.

I felt like an uninvited ghost at my own marriage’s funeral.

I sat with my back straight, refusing to break. I picked up my crystal water glass. My knuckles turned bone-white against the glass, squeezing so hard the rim trembled against my fingers.

Beneath the linen tablecloth, a warm, weathered hand gently covered my wrist.

I looked over. My mother was watching me. Her jaw was set, and her eyes were filled with a fierce, quiet ache.

She didn't know all the details yet. But she knew I was bleeding inside.
