Chapter 2

The guards staggered back, shielding their faces from the spray of red wine and shattered glass.

I didn't waste a single second. I shoved past the nearest guard, slammed my shoulder into the heavy exit door, and burst into the raging storm.

The freezing rain hit me instantly, soaking through my clothes in seconds. Lightning split the sky, illuminating Lily’s tiny form collapsed against the iron gate. She was trembling violently, her small hands still clutching the bars, her knuckles stained with washed-out streaks of red.

"Lily!"

I dropped into the flooded driveway, tearing off my wool trench coat and wrapping her shivering body inside it. Her skin was burning hot against my fingers, but her lips were blue, her small frame convulsing in violent shivers.

"Mommy..." she whimpered, her eyes rolling back as she lost consciousness.

I scooped her into my arms, ran to my beat-up sedan parked down the drive, and threw her into the back seat. My hands shook on the steering wheel, but I forced the accelerator to the floor, speeding into the torrential night toward the nearest public hospital.

An hour later, the harsh fluorescent lights of the pediatric emergency room buzzed overhead.

Lily lay in a metal-framed hospital bed, an oxygen mask strapped over her small face and IV lines taped across both of her bruised, bandaged hands. The monitors beside her beeped in rapid, erratic rhythms. The doctor had already given the diagnosis: an acute respiratory infection worsened by prolonged cold exposure, accompanied by high-fever convulsions.

"Daddy..." Lily muttered into the mask, tossing her head weakly against the pillow. "Please... don't throw Lily away... Lily will be good..."

My chest contracted with a pain so intense it nearly took my breath away.

I sat by her bedside, gently encasing her cold, needle-marked fingers between my palms. I leaned down and pressed my forehead against her knuckles, letting the rhythmic beep of the monitor ground me.

Every lingering tear I had cried over the past seven years evaporated. The soft, accommodating woman who had bent over backward to please the Miller family died right there in that sterile room. In her place, only cold, sharpened resolve remained.

Dawn broke gray and lifeless across the hospital windowsill.

The silence shattered when the room door was kicked open, the wood banging violently against the adjacent wall.

Brenda marched in, dressed in a fox-fur collar and clutching an alligator-skin handbag. Her face twisted into an ugly sneer the moment she laid eyes on Lily.

Without a word of greeting, Brenda snatched a manila folder from under her arm and hurled it directly onto Lily's blanket.

Two documents spilled across the sheets: a legally stamped *Petition for Dissolution of Adoption* and an official intake letter from the city's public welfare shelter.

"Sign them," Brenda snapped, her voice ringing off the tiled walls. "Right now."

I didn't touch the papers. I kept my hand wrapped securely around Lily's, not even shifting my posture. "Get out."

"You listen to me, Evelyn," Brenda hissed, leaning over the foot of the bed with venom in her eyes. "You’ve spent five years playing house with this nameless trash, blocking the family lineage. Chloe is carrying a real boy. A true Miller heir. Do you think we’re going to let a gutter rat from an orphanage share even a single cent of our family’s estate?"

She jabbed a manicured fingernail toward the papers. "You have three days to return this little bastard to the orphanage. If you drag your feet, I’ll have social services drag her out of this bed by her hair."

"Are you finished?" I asked quietly, looking up at her with dead eyes.

Before Brenda could screech another insult, the door swung open again.

Mark stepped into the room.

He looked entirely unaffected by the previous night, his bespoke Italian suit pressed without a single wrinkle, his gold cufflinks catching the fluorescent light. He walked over with an air of complete authority, looking down at Lily as if she were a stain on an expensive rug.

He pulled a leather checkbook from his breast pocket, scribbled across a slip of paper, tore it out, and flicked it onto the bedside table.

It was a personal check for one hundred thousand dollars.

"That should cover her medical bills and whatever nonsense you need to settle her back into the system," Mark said, his voice smooth and utterly devoid of warmth.

I looked at the piece of paper, then back up at the man I had called my husband. "What is this, Mark?"

"It’s a lifeline, Evelyn," he said, adjusting his tie. "You’re an orphan with no family backing and no career. You’ve lived off my money for seven years. If you cooperate, send the kid away, and let Chloe move into the main villa without a scene, I won’t divorce you. You can keep your title as my official wife."

A dry, bitter laugh almost escaped my throat, but I kept my face entirely still.

"Keep the title?" I echoed softly.

Mark smiled thinly, a condescending smirk playing at the corner of his lips. "Consider it my final act of mercy. Be realistic. Without the Miller name, you're nothing but an unemployable housewife. Take this sick stray and walk out that door, and you won't last three days before you’re begging for scraps on the street."

He truly believed it. In his eyes, I was a helpless stray he had plucked from obscurity, completely dependent on his wealth to survive.

I let go of Lily’s hand, tucked the blanket gently around her shoulders, and stood up.

I picked up the hundred-thousand-dollar check from the nightstand.

Mark raised an eyebrow, clearly expecting me to fold it away and thank him for his generosity.

Instead, I gripped the paper with both hands.

Right in front of his face, I tore the check in half.

Then into quarters.

Then into tiny, jagged shreds.

Mark’s smug expression instantly vanished, replaced by shock and mounting rage. "What the hell do you think you’re doing?!"

I stepped forward, grabbed the front lapel of his tailored jacket, and forcefully shoved the handful of shredded paper straight into his breast pocket.

"Take your dirty money and get out," I said, my voice dangerously calm, every word razor sharp. "Don't foul the air my daughter breathes."

Brenda gasped in outrage, while Mark grabbed my wrist to shake me off. I didn't flinch. I stared straight into his furious eyes until he ripped his hand away, his chest heaving with humiliation.

"You ungrateful bitch," Mark snarled, his face dark with fury. "You think you have a choice? There’s a mandatory board meeting at the family estate tonight. If you aren’t there on your knees begging Chloe for forgiveness, I will strip you of every asset and make sure you never work in this city again!"

He spun on his heel and stormed out, Brenda trailing close behind, throwing curses over her shoulder before slamming the door shut behind them.

The room fell quiet once more, save for the soft hum of the oxygen machine.

I walked over to the door, locked it from the inside, and drew the blinds.

Then, I reached beneath the collar of my shirt and pulled out a silver pendant resting against my chest. I twisted the hidden latch on the back. The metal casing clicked open, revealing a tiny, black microchip.

I removed the SIM card from my phone, slotted the encrypted chip into the tray, and powered the device on.

A sleek, unfamiliar interface loaded in seconds, bypassing standard cellular networks and connecting directly to a private satellite link that had remained dark for seven long years.

I tapped the single stored contact and brought the phone to my ear.

The line connected on the very first ring.

A deep, powerful voice answered from across the ocean, thick with restrained emotion. "Evelyn? Is it really you?"

"Father," I said quietly, looking back at Lily sleeping peacefully on the bed. "It’s Evelyn."

The man on the other end exhaled a shaky breath. "Tell me what you need, sweetheart."

"Initiate full asset recovery," I said, the coldness in my voice absolute. "Pull every investment, freeze every joint venture, and call in every loan. By tonight, I want Miller Tech’s capital completely cut off."
