BETROTHED TO MY STEPMOM’S HUSBAND

“These are symptoms of pregnancy.” The doctor said to me. I couldn't believe this. “What?” I asked the doctor again, just to be sure. “You are pregnant, Kayla.” He said again, sounding so confident as he handed the result to me. “You are two months gone and more excitingly, you aren't carrying one child.” He told me. I was confused here. “You are pregnant with triplets.” Without wasting so much time, I rushed home. The news, waiting to be spilled out of my mouth. On reaching however, I could sense a strange presence which I went to check. Upon getting to the kitchen, my stepmom, Giorgia, was cooking for my husband and trying to seduce him. She was here while I was away in the hospital. I went speechless, then furious, not wanting anyone to take my man from me. “Don't tell me you want to make a big deal out of this. It is nothing, she just came to cook for me. Nothing more.” He tried to explain. But few days later, the greatest shock of my life happens– Baron handed over a separation agreement to me. “Our separation. Our union ends today. I would rather be with Giorgia than you. Chapter 1

Kayla's POV

“You're not feeling the fever and nauseousness because you're sick, you're experiencing them as symptoms of pregnancy.” The doctor said to me.

I couldn't believe this. “I am what?” I asked the doctor again, just to be sure. “You are pregnant, Kayla.” He said again, sounding so confident as he handed the result to me.

I had never been this excited before. For the past month, I have been feeling very ill. Almost like I had a life-threatening sickness, which landed me in the hospital for over two weeks.

Enough tests had to be done to be sure it wasn't something serious.

“You are two months gone and more excitingly, you aren't carrying one child.” He told me.

I was confused here. “You are pregnant with triplets.” He aired out hurriedly. I could sense that he was just as excited as I was at that. He was friends with my husband, Baron Fergio and wanted the best for us.

“I can't believe this!” I said to him, I was carrying three babies in my womb. I always wanted three kinds, but I didn't know I would have to be going for them at once. Baron was so obsessed about being a dad but unfortunately, we have been trying it for three years now.

“Thank you doctor, thank you. Baron will be so excited.” I said snappily, grinning. All he did was smile. He knew how much Baron wanted a baby. I was twenty- three and he was twenty-five. He always wanted to be a jumping father, having a child before the age of thirty. I was so glad I could give him this.

Baron, my husband, is a billionaire and CEO of his family company, Cruisia, the biggest car brand in the world.

Without wasting so much time, I rushed home. The news, waiting to be spilled out of my mouth.

On reaching however, I could perceive the aroma of food from their kitchen. It engulfed the whole house, feeling like a lot of cooking was going on. I was in the hospital for treatment and expected Baron to order food, he didn't really have time for cooking being a busy CEO. I wondered where this must be coming from.

I didn't even see Baron in the sitting room as usual. Normally, he would be seated there, working, but he wasn't.

I wanted to go to the room to change, but I couldn't look past the smell of food and decided to go see for myself what was going on there.

I even began to fantasize instances, where I would see him cooking for me and all that. It was however a different thing when I entered inside.

It was Giorgia, his ex who had always wanted to come back to him in the kitchen, cooking as she spoke and laughed with my husband.

I stood still, glaring at them both in horror.

What's she doing here?

He put his hands on her waist, while she laughed and stirred the pot.

At one point, she scooped the food and fed him a taste.

“Your food is perfect!” He said to her after having a taste of her food. Something he has never said to me before.

“And Kayla’s?” She asked him. “Yours is better.” He replied. I gasped in shock as I heard him choose someone else over me. “I wish I chose you as my wife instead of her but I made a great mistake by neglecting you.”

“You know we can still be together, especially as your wife can't bear you a child.” She suggested.

My lips parted so wide, my arms crossing over my chest. They weren't aware I was present.

“You just need to divorce her!” She added.

My gasp caught their attention and they both turned to me. Giorgia was shocked to see me. She shrunk at once. I could tell that she wished for the skies to open and absorb her, or the ground to open and swallow her. Either way, she just wanted to vanish from my sight.

Baron on the other hand was not affected by my presence, he pretended as if nothing really serious happened. “Kayla. You're back!” He said. “You never told me that Giorgia came to cook for you while I was away.” I asked him.

“The doctor didn't tell me you were coming home soon so she offered to help since I wanted home food.” He said, trying to change the topic of concern.

I was however not having it. “Don't try to deviate from my question. Why is she here?” I asked again. Now asking more from anger than wanting to know why she was here.

“Don't tell me you want to make a big deal out of this. It is nothing, she just came to cook for me. Nothing more.” He tried to explain. I didn't want to tell them yet about what I heard from her mouth, I wanted him to use his mouth to reply to me.

“But her food is perfect and mine is not? Your hands on her waist and she is feeding you? What do you call that?” I asked, feeling bitter and betrayed. My heart began to shrink. The anger suddenly turned into bitter tears and envy.

“But I love you so much, sacrificed a lot for you all through these years but just a single reconnection with your ex and you're abandoning me?”

“What do you mean?”

“What are you trying to say?” He scolded, pretending to be ignorant.

Then I exploded. “Must I let you know that I've heard all that she said about you marrying her?”

Giorgia gasped, covering her mouth with her palms. She didn't expect me to hear this.

Giorgia, maybe out of guilt, stepped towards me. “Please, Kayla, it's not what you think. I was just helping….” Before she could complete her statement, I sent a hot slap across her cheeks, which sent her staggering.

Baron immediately stepped on and pushed me over. “What the hell, Kayla? Why did you do that?” He asked. “She was just helping me cook because I can't do it myself and this is how you say thank you?” He asked again.

I didn't answer him as I was still very angry with both of them. If this is what I caught them doing and they had been staying in the same house for two weeks, I wondered what more they would have done.

“You know what? For this short period of time that your stepmom has been with me, she has proven to be a better wife material than you.” My husband yelled right into my face.

“She does everything so well and I never have to complain. Maybe if you learnt from her, rather than judge her for what she didn't do, you would actually become a better person.” This was the final blow from him, just before walking away from me, holding her hands.

I stood there for a while, thinking about where this was coming from. Giorgia was dating him in his college days and before he became a CEO, but as soon as he became one, he started neglecting her. He now had a whole lot of tasks on his desk as a new CEO and had no time to be a committed partner. Besides, she may not have been in his class again, but I doubt this is the real reason for him leaving her, apart from the former.

Going back to the sitting room, I saw them together again, this time seated together, watching a movie as they laughed. It was like I didn't exist.

It was berating to me. Giorgia wanted to stand up on seeing me, but Baron held her back. “Do not go anywhere.” He said to her, ultimately making her stay with him, while I watched. “I so much enjoy your company.”

I stormed out of the house when I could not stand them anymore.

I couldn't believe the things I just heard and the way it played out before me. This was supposed to be a memorable day for me, a day to share the greatest good news in three years but it was turning to a doomsday for me.

I was so panicked as to what was left in store for me now that she reappeared.
