Betraying The Queen: A Mafia Boss's Downfall Novel Cover

Betraying The Queen: A Mafia Boss's Downfall

For seven years, I laundered blood money and managed a fortified estate for my Mafia Boss husband, Silas, believing we were building a bulletproof life for our son. Then a stranger handed me a baptism invitation for his newborn daughter with a civilian woman named Valentina. His Syndicate trips had been a six-year double life, funneling millions in Mafia tribute to fund her lifestyle with authentic diamonds while I wore cheap counterfeits. My in-laws had even stolen the sacred gold medallion I made for my miscarried twins and gifted it to his illegitimate child. But I am a Mafia Queen, and I do not weep in the shadows. I walked onto their banquet stage and grabbed the microphone before fifty Syndicate bosses. Husband, tell them. How many years have we been married?

Chapter 2

The hotel is a fortress. Its circular driveway is choked with a cordon of black SUVs.

Men in dark suits stand near the entrance, their eyes, flat and watchful, scanning the street. I recognize half of the Syndicate guards stationed at the heavy, revolving glass doors.

I walk directly past them, my gaze fixed on a point far ahead, refusing to acknowledge their presence.

The opulent banquet hall is a shock of light and sound. I am met not by a glare, but by the fractured, blinding glitter of a dozen crystal chandeliers. The cavernous room is heavy with the funereal scent of thousands of white roses and festooned with heavy gold ribbons.

I find her immediately.

Valentina Rossi is positioned near the great floral entrance archway, possessed of a soft, unstudied beauty. With her gentle features and bright, innocent eyes, she lacks the scent of lye used to scrub blood from a car trunk-she seems a creature from another world, one not steeped in our particular darkness.

A tiny infant wrapped in a pale silk blanket is a warm, living weight against her breast.

I walk up to her.

She sees me approach, and her face breaks into a painfully warm, welcoming smile. She takes me for one of Silas's civilian colleagues, greeting me with bright enthusiasm, thanking me profusely for coming to celebrate their newborn daughter.

I lower my gaze to the baby.

A cold, silent pressure builds behind my ribs, a physical manifestation of a betrayal so profound it has no sound.

The infant has Silas's unruly shock of dark hair. She carries the exact hard line of his jaw. The ancestral shadow of his features is stamped upon her, an undeniable forgery.

And yet, I keep my spine straight as a rod of iron. My face is a mask of pure, lethal calm when I casually inquire where Silas might be.

Valentina shifts the slumbering baby in her arms, her voice light as she tells me that Silas just left to pick up his parents.

My heart gives a single, sharp, sickening lurch.

His parents. My in-laws. The Elder Romanos.

It was only last week that I personally had arranged for eight thousand dollars in untraceable cash to be wired directly to my mother-in-law. They had looked me in the eye and told me the police heat was becoming too high. They had insisted they needed to go on a sudden European exile to avoid FBI scrutiny. I had supervised the packing of their bags myself. I had arranged their private, off-the-books transport.

Deaf to the storm in my head, Valentina gestures for me to follow her, leading me to a large, conspicuous round table near the front of the room.

I sit down, my eyes making a slow, deliberate circuit of the people sitting around me.

I see at once who they are. They are not Syndicate men. They are Valentina's civilian relatives and Silas's fabricated corporate colleagues, all of them at ease in this gilded cage, accompanied by their resplendent wives.

They are laughing without restraint and drinking expensive champagne. They talk loudly about Silas and Valentina's storybook romance.

A man who purports to be a corporate associate, sitting directly across from me, raises his glass, proposing a toast to their picture-perfect life. Between sips, he casually mentions that Silas and Valentina have been happily married for over six years.

Six years.

The number lands not like a blow, but like the slow, cold press of a surgeon's blade. My husband has been living a fraudulent, painstakingly constructed double life for six years. He staged an entire lavish, fake civilian wedding while coming home every night to my bed.

The women at the table huddle together, their conversation a rustle of silk and envy about the extravagant jewelry Silas showers upon Valentina. They speak in hushed tones about the heavy, authentic gold necklaces and the fiery diamond bracelets.

Slowly, I glance down at my own unadorned wrists. Silas always held me to a meager base allowance, bestowing upon me cheap, counterfeit gold pieces. He always told me a Capo's wife must maintain a modest profile to avoid IRS tax audits. He swore to me he was saving every penny of his cut for our son's future.

Instead, he was siphoning massive Syndicate tributes and literal blood money to fund this woman's sheltered life.

A phone chimes. It is Valentina's. She answers it on speaker.

I immediately hear Silas's deep voice emanating from the small device. He speaks to her with a profound, gentle affection I have not been shown in years. He tells her he just picked up Mom and Dad and that they are only five minutes away.

The Associates at my table smile warmly at this domestic display. They loudly praise Silas as a fiercely devoted family man who worships the very ground Valentina walks on.

Valentina lowers her phone, a brief flicker of stress crossing her delicate features. She murmurs an excuse about needing to take another urgent call from the caterers.

She turns back to me. With a look of guileless trust, she gently holds the infant out in my direction.

With a sweet smile, she asks if I can hold her baby for just a minute.

My arms move with a will of their own. I reach out, accepting the warm, fragile weight. And so I take the child of the man who has just destroyed my entire life.
