Betrayed Wife's Escape from Her Captor

The sound of my heels clicking against the marble floor echoed through the empty hallway as I made my way to our bedroom. The mansion felt different today—too quiet, too still. Kai's meeting had ended earlier than expected, and I'd decided to surprise him with dinner plans at that new restaurant downtown. I pushed open the heavy oak door to our master suite, my smile already forming as I prepared to call out his name. The words died in my throat. Kai stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, his shirt unbuttoned, dark hair disheveled. But it wasn't his state of undress that made my blood turn to ice—it was the woman perched on the edge of our bed, her blonde hair cascading over bare shoulders, adjusting her silk blouse with the casual confidence of someone who belonged there. Estella Wagner. Time seemed to fracture into sharp, cutting pieces. The woman I'd heard whispered about in the shadows of Kai's world, the ghost from his past that I'd convinced myself was exactly that—a ghost.

Chapter 1

Yet here she was, flesh and blood and devastating beauty, sitting on my bed like she owned it.

"Alma." Kai's voice cut through the silence, devoid of surprise or shame. His fingers moved methodically up his shirt, buttoning it with infuriating calm. "You're home early."

I couldn't speak. Couldn't breathe. My purse slipped from numb fingers and hit the floor with a dull thud that seemed to echo forever.

Estella turned toward me, and I saw her face fully for the first time. She was everything I wasn't—ethereal where I was grounded, mysterious where I was open, untouchable where I was vulnerable. Her lips curved into something that might have been a smile if it hadn't been so cold.

"Hello, Alma," she said, her voice like honey over broken glass. "I've heard so much about you."

The casual cruelty of it—the way she said my name like she was tasting something bitter—finally broke through my shock. "Get out." The words came out strangled, barely recognizable as my own voice.

Kai finished the last button and reached for his cufflinks on the nightstand. "Estella, give us a moment."

She rose from the bed with fluid grace, smoothing down her skirt. As she passed me, she paused, close enough that I could smell her expensive perfume—the same scent that had been clinging to Kai's clothes for weeks. "Don't take too long," she murmured to him, her fingers trailing across his chest in a gesture so intimate, so possessive, that it felt like a physical blow.

The door closed behind her with a soft click that sounded like a death knell.

"How long?" I whispered, though part of me didn't want to know.

Kai adjusted his cufflinks with the same methodical precision he applied to everything in his life. "Does it matter?"

"How long, Kai?"

He finally looked at me, and what I saw in his dark eyes made my knees weak. Not guilt. Not shame. Nothing but cold, brutal honesty. "Since she came back. Three months."

Three months. Three months of lies, of him coming home late with excuses about business meetings. Three months of me cooking his favorite meals, planning our future, believing in the fairy tale I thought we were living.

"Why?" The word broke on a sob I couldn't contain.

Kai moved to his dresser, selecting a tie with the same care he'd use to choose a weapon. "Because she's who I've always wanted."

The simple brutality of it stole whatever breath I had left. "Then why did you marry me?"

He paused, tie halfway around his neck, and for a moment I thought I saw something flicker across his face. But when he spoke, his voice was steady, merciless. "Because she wasn't available. You were... convenient."

Convenient. The word hit me like a physical blow, doubling me over as if he'd struck me in the stomach.

"You can stay," he continued, knotting his tie with practiced efficiency. "For appearances. The syndicate expects me to have a wife, and you've played the part well enough. But don't delude yourself about what this is, Alma. It was never real."

Never real. Four years of marriage, of believing I'd found my protector, my hero, my happily ever after—all of it nothing but an elaborate lie.

"I loved you," I whispered, the words scraping my throat raw.

Kai turned to face me fully, and his expression was almost pitying. "I know. That's what made you so perfect for the role."

The role. That's all I'd ever been to him—an actress playing the part of the beloved wife while the real woman waited in the wings.

Estella's laughter drifted through the door, light and musical and utterly without warmth. The sound of a woman who'd won, who'd reclaimed what she considered rightfully hers.

I stumbled backward, my hand fumbling for the doorknob, desperate to escape before I completely shattered. But Kai's voice followed me, the final nail in the coffin of everything I'd believed about us.

"Welcome to reality, Mrs. Cole."
