Chapter 4

I was so unfortunate. After suddenly losing my hearing, my company, which I had painstakingly founded, lost several major orders in a row and was on the verge of collapse. But somehow, I was also fortunate. My husband, Franklin, and my best friend, Sucy, stood by me through thick and thin. When the company was in crisis, they didn't hesitate to quit their jobs and joined my company to help me manage it. After a tumultuous year, the company finally got back on track. Franklin tried to persuade me to take a break at home. "Honey, your deafness might be due to excessive stress. Why not take some time off and relax? Maybe you'll get better," he said, echoing Dr.Jason's words. But Dr.Jason had actually suggested I see a psychologist, not just take a rest at home. I was puzzled and hesitant, but Sucy chimed in, "Come on, don't be so hard on yourself. I'll take good care of the company." Thinking that I had been working non - stop for years and now the company was stable, I finally agreed. Two years have passed in a flash since then. Every day for these two years, Franklin would make me a warm glass of milk. If he couldn't come home due to work, he would ask Sucy to do it. Then, he'd watch me take my medicine and go to sleep before he attended to his own business. I was so grateful to them. I even prepared a guest room for Sucy to stay in regularly, worried that it was unsafe for her to go home too late. Sucy often hugged me in front of Franklin. "This is how I show my love for you," she'd say. Franklin would then pretend to be jealous, signing to me, "Hey, I'm jealous!" and then give me a kiss. I really loved those moments. It felt so warm. The man I loved most and my best friend were by my side, and my company was running smoothly, which I could tell from the piles of documents Sucy brought for me to sign every once in a while. I was truly a happy woman. If only I could hear... The thought of my deafness always made me a bit frustrated. But then I'd remind myself that as long as I could keep this happy life, not being able to hear wasn't such a big deal. At Franklin's persuasion, I spent more time cooking, painting, cleaning, and decorating at home, becoming a perfect wife. Franklin was overjoyed. One day, after having too much to drink, he even sent me a message, "Honey, it would have been so much better if you had been like this earlier." Something was wrong. He would never dare to talk to me like that. I suspected that he was having an affair with my best friend, Sucy. This wasn't just baseless paranoia. That message he sent me was the key that unlocked everything. Franklin didn't know that my success in starting a business wasn't just because I was good at dealing with people. I was also extremely observant and had an intuitive sense. Years ago, there was a boss who wanted to do business with me. But he had a reputation for being sleazy, and I was a well - known female entrepreneur. He clearly had other motives besides just business. I hired a private detective. I found out that he was keeping several female students as mistresses besides his wife. Once I had the photos, the deal was done. Until he was arrested five years ago for tax evasion, we maintained a stable and proper business relationship. All of this was thanks to the glimpse I got of the remarks and phone number on his incoming call during our dinner. Franklin had no idea how observant I was. So, he didn't realize that he had already aroused my suspicion. Even though I was deaf, my eyes were still sharp. I suspected that he was having an affair with Sucy. A year ago, I would have never thought of such a thing. Back then, I truly believed I was living a happy life. I had a reliable husband and a best friend who loved me wholeheartedly. When my company was on the verge of bankruptcy and I lost my hearing, they didn't abandon me. Instead, they stepped up to support me. I was so grateful that I even transferred a portion of the company's shares to Sucy. I thought she would be over the moon. Her background wasn't great, and her career had always been unstable, full of ups and downs. She had lost three jobs in one year. Her professional skills weren't outstanding either. When she came to help in my company, she mainly served as a communicator and messenger. I made the major decisions, she relayed the messages, and Franklin carried them out. So, although I was grateful, I knew their capabilities were limited. The shares I transferred were already a huge token of my gratitude. But that day, I was disappointed. Sucy just forced a smile, put away the transfer papers, and excused herself to get a drink. As she passed by Franklin, I saw something in the mirror's reflection. She said something to Franklin. I couldn't hear what it was, but I memorized her lip - movements clearly. From that day on, I started learning lip - reading.
