Chapter 2

For three days, Ethan wore the mask of a saint.

He woke up early every morning, plating my favorite avocado toast with agonizing precision on the kitchen island. He texted me hourly from the office. He even shoved his phone in my face on Tuesday evening as soon as he walked through the door.

"Look," he said, swiping through his empty contact list. "Victoria is gone. Blocked on everything. I swear to you, Bella, it is over."

He booked the corner booth at Le Petit Bistro, the French place I mentioned in passing months ago.

"We need to focus on us," he whispered over the candlelight, dropping a piece of roasted duck onto my plate. "Just you and me. We are going to fix this."

I chewed the food. It tasted like ash. I wanted to believe the warmth in his eyes, but the phantom echo of his voice calling another woman a dirty slut kept ringing in my ears.

Then came the fourth night.

The shower ran in the master bathroom, the rushing water masking the sound of my footsteps. I grabbed his wool coat from the living room sofa to hang it in the hall closet. A heavy weight swung in the left pocket, thumping hard against my thigh.

I reached inside. My fingers brushed cold metal.

I pulled out a phone. It was an older model, encased in matte black plastic. Ethan’s actual phone sat on the kitchen counter, plugged into the charger.

My pulse pounded against my ribs. I tapped the screen. A passcode prompt flashed in the dim light of the living room.

I typed his birthday. Incorrect.

I typed our anniversary. Incorrect.

A memory surfaced. Two years ago, Ethan introduced Victoria at a company gala as his new marketing director. I had found her social media later that night out of curiosity. May fourteenth. She threw a massive yacht party for her birthday.

My thumb hovered over the glass. I typed 0-5-1-4.

The screen unlocked.

I clicked the phone app. The top log showed an outgoing call to a single initial: *V* exactly one hour ago. Duration: twenty-seven minutes. He had texted me an hour ago, claiming he was stuck in gridlock traffic.

I opened the messages. The screen filled with texts sent today.

*V: Wanted to fuck you during the board meeting.*

*V: Is your wife still playing the victim?*

*V: Want to hear you say my name on the phone tonight while thinking of me masturbating.*

My knees gave out. I sank onto the edge of the coffee table, my nails digging into the hard casing of the phone. I scrolled up. The messages stretched back for months.

*Ethan: Yes, Mommy.*

*V: Good dog.*

A fresh wave of nausea hit me. I forced my eyes to read the next exchange.

*Ethan: I can't stand looking at her naked anymore. She’s letting herself go. There's too much fat on her waist.*

*V: Throw her away then. You have something better to use now.*

I did not cry. The tears from four nights ago were completely gone, replaced by a cold, hollow void in my chest. I pulled my own phone from my pocket, opened the camera, and snapped photos of every single message. Every timestamp. Every filthy word.

The bathroom door clicked open.

The shower stopped. Ethan strolled into the living room, a towel wrapped around his waist, whistling a cheerful tune. He froze.

His eyes locked onto the black phone in my hand. The blood drained from his face, leaving his skin a sickly gray.

"Bella," he croaked.

"Mommy?" I asked, my voice flat. "Good dog?"

He lunged forward, dropping to his knees right in front of me. He grabbed my wrists, his fingers trembling violently.

"It is a sickness," he blurted out, tears instantly welling in his eyes. "I have a problem, Bella. I need therapy. I did not mean any of it!"

"You complained about my body."

"She manipulated me! She makes me say those things!" He sobbed, burying his wet face against my knees. "I am a monster. I know I am. But I am trying to fix it. I kept the phone to tell her it was over!"

"You talked to her for twenty-seven minutes on your way home."

"I was ending it!"

I stared down at the top of his wet head. "She asked if I was still playing the victim."

He flinched. The crying stopped abruptly. He lifted his head. The tears were still there, but the panic in his eyes vanished, replaced by a hard, calculating glare.

He let go of my wrists and stood up. He tightened the towel around his waist and looked down at me.

"So what?" he asked. His voice dropped an octave, devoid of any warmth.

I blinked. "Excuse me?"

"I said, so what?" He crossed his arms over his bare chest. "You found the burner phone. You read the texts. Congratulations, Bella. You are a detective. Now what are you going to do about it?"

"I am leaving you."

Ethan let out a sharp, mocking laugh. "Leaving me? Where to go?"

I stood up, gripping the phone tightly. "Anywhere away from you."

He stepped closer, towering over me. "Let us be realistic here. You are a housewife. You have not worked in eleven years. You have no job. You have no savings. The cars are in my name. The house is in my name. My company pays for everything you eat, wear, and use."

"I dropped out of my master's program to support your startup," I said.

"And I paid you back by giving you a mansion," he fired back. "You have not lifted a finger to earn a paycheck since. You think anyone else is going to put up with a boring, aging housewife? I am the best thing that will ever happen to you."

"You think I am trapped."

"I know you are," he sneered. He snatched the black phone out of my hand. "You think you can just walk away? You do not have the spine for it."

"Listen to me," Ethan said, pointing at my face. "I provide a great life for you. If I want to blow off some steam with a woman who actually takes care of her body, I will. Look at the big picture, Bella. Look at everything I give you."

I remained completely silent.

"I will not file for divorce," he continued, his tone turning magnanimous. "For the sake of the last eleven years, I will let you stay. Just keep the house clean, keep dinner on the table, and stop snooping through my things. We can pretend none of this happened."

He waited for me to scream. He waited for me to cry.

I just turned around.

"Where are you going?" he snapped.

"To sleep."

I walked down the hallway, my bare feet silent against the hardwood. I stepped into the guest bedroom and closed the door. The lock clicked into place with a sharp snap.

"You will get over it by morning!" Ethan shouted from the living room. "You always do!"

I walked over to the edge of the twin bed and sat down in the dark. My hands were not shaking anymore. My heart was not racing. The eleven years of love and devotion I had poured into that man shattered into a million irreparable pieces on the floor.

I picked up my phone. I scrolled past my contacts, past the local friends I made through Ethan, past the wives of his business partners. I opened the dialer.

My fingers moved on memory alone, punching in an international number I had not used in a decade.

The line rang twice.

"Hello?" a man's voice answered.

"Dad," I said.

A sharp intake of air echoed through the speaker. The silence stretched for three agonizing seconds.

"My dear Bella," Arthur said. His voice trembled with a heavily suppressed, frantic excitement. "After all these years... are you finally willing to come back?"

"Yes," I whispered into the dark. "I am coming home."
