Chapter 3

Two weeks passed in a blur of preparations I barely understood. James handled everything with quiet efficiency—the venue, the flowers, even my dress. When the ivory silk gown arrived, I stared at it hanging in the closet of his guest room, unable to believe someone had chosen something specifically for me, not for the Carr heiress I'd pretended to be.

The morning of the wedding, I stood before the mirror in a suite at the Four Seasons, my hands trembling as I fastened my grandmother's jade bracelet over the delicate lace sleeves. The woman staring back looked like a stranger—elegant, composed, nothing like the broken girl who'd been cast out just weeks ago.

"You look beautiful."

I turned to find James in the doorway, devastatingly handsome in his charcoal suit. His dark eyes held something I couldn't quite name as they swept over me.

"Are you sure about this?" I whispered, my voice barely audible.

"Are you?"

I thought of the alternative—Gerald Morrison's wrinkled hands, the Carr family's cold dismissal, the emptiness that had consumed me since that night in Father's study. "Yes."

The ceremony took place in a private garden pavilion, white orchids cascading from every surface. As I walked down the petal-strewn aisle, I spotted them immediately—Rey, Jamie, and Zyaire clustered together near the back, their expressions unreadable. Rey's jaw was tight, Jamie adjusted his glasses nervously, and Zyaire stared at his hands.

The Carr family sat in the back row like reluctant spectators. Mrs. Carr dabbed at her eyes with a lace handkerchief, though whether from sadness or social embarrassment, I couldn't tell. Mr. Carr checked his watch twice during my approach.

But it was Isabela who made my breath catch. She'd worn red—a bold, attention-grabbing crimson that screamed look at me even at someone else's wedding. She leaned close to Rey, her voice carrying just loud enough for nearby guests to hear.

"Poor thing," she murmured, her tone dripping false sympathy. "Having to settle for damaged goods. I suppose beggars can't be choosers."

Rey's hand found her waist, pulling her closer, and something twisted in my chest. Not jealousy—I was surprised to realize—but a hollow ache for what I'd thought we'd had.

Then James stepped into my line of vision, and everything else faded. He stood at the altar with perfect composure, his presence commanding without effort. When I reached him, he extended his hand, and I placed mine in his, feeling the warmth of his skin through my gloves.

The ceremony blurred together—words about love and commitment that felt both foreign and desperately hoped for. But when James lifted my veil, his eyes met mine with such unexpected tenderness that my breath caught in my throat. For just a moment, the careful mask he wore for the world slipped, and I glimpsed something real underneath.

"I will," he said, his voice low and certain when asked if he'd take me as his wife.

When my turn came, I looked into his dark eyes and whispered, "I will," meaning it more than I'd expected.

That evening, I stood in the master bedroom of James's penthouse, my wedding dress replaced by a silk nightgown that felt like wearing moonlight. The city sparkled beyond floor-to-ceiling windows, but I couldn't focus on the view. My hands shook as I touched the jade bracelet, the familiar ritual failing to calm my racing heart.

James entered carrying two glasses of wine, still wearing his dress shirt though he'd discarded his jacket and tie. He handed me a glass, then moved to the window, giving me space to breathe.

"The rumors about me," he said without preamble, his voice steady. "They're lies. Carefully cultivated lies that serve a purpose."

I blinked, wine forgotten. "What?"

He turned to face me, his expression serious. "I let people believe I was damaged because it kept the fortune hunters away. The social climbers. The women who saw only my wealth and influence." His eyes found mine. "You married me believing I could give you nothing but protection and a name. That tells me everything I need to know about who you are."

My pulse thundered in my ears. "Then you're not—"

"I'm very much intact," he said, a hint of dry humor touching his lips. "The question is whether you want to discover that for yourself."

He crossed the room slowly, deliberately, giving me every opportunity to retreat. When he stopped in front of me, close enough that I could smell his cologne and feel the heat radiating from his skin, he cupped my face in his hands with surprising gentleness.

"Do you want this, Serenity? Not the arrangement we made, but this. Us. Really us."

I looked into his eyes—dark, intense, patient—and saw something I'd never seen directed at me before. Genuine desire. Not for my name or my family's money, but for me.

"Yes," I whispered.

What followed shattered every expectation I'd harbored. James's touch was reverent yet commanding, patient yet passionate. He worshipped my body with a skill and intensity that left me breathless, proving beyond doubt that the rumors were elaborate fiction. When he moved over me, inside me, I felt claimed in the most fundamental way—not as property, but as something precious.

Afterward, lying against his chest with his arms wrapped around me, I felt safer than I had in weeks. His fingers traced lazy patterns on my bare shoulder, and I closed my eyes, savoring the unfamiliar sensation of being truly wanted.

"There's something else you should know," James murmured against my hair. "About why I chose you."

I tilted my head to look at him.

"Years ago, at a charity gala, there was a young girl who found me hiding on a balcony. I'd just learned some devastating news about my family, and I was... struggling. She didn't know who I was, didn't want anything from me. She just sat with me and talked about the stars until I could breathe again."

My heart stopped. "The Children's Hospital benefit. You were the boy in the corner, crying."

"You remembered."

"You were so sad. I couldn't just leave you there."

His arms tightened around me. "I never forgot that kindness. When I learned about your situation, I knew I had to help the girl who'd once helped me."

I pressed my face against his chest, overwhelmed. All this time, he'd remembered. All this time, I'd mattered to someone.

For the first time since learning the truth about my parentage, I felt like I might actually belong somewhere.
