Chapter 1

On the way back to the pack, I complained to Raiden about Giovanna pushing me to the ground.

He accused me of faking it for sympathy and sent me to the rogue lands for "training."

Two years of hardship left me emaciated, barely clinging to life.

I thought he would come to take me back, but instead, he dragged me out to donate blood for Giovanna.

"Two years of training haven’t humbled you yet? Still playing the victim!"

"Giovanna is severely anemic, and you’re the only one with a matching scent in the entire pack. If you delay and make her condition worse, you’ll regret it!"

He didn’t listen to my explanations and forced me into the car.

He didn’t know that two years in the rogue lands had left me with a rare illness. I had only a month left, and forcibly donating blood would cut that down to five days.

---

Raiden dragged me into the hospital, his aura cold and unyielding. Not a single word of concern passed his lips.

"Doctor! I’ve found a donor for Giovanna!"

When he looked at me, the urgency on his face vanished, replaced by a cold detachment.

"Do whatever the doctor tells you. If you behave, I might consider letting you stay in the pack house."

I gave a bitter smile and nodded numbly.

I wasn’t agreeing because I still held onto some foolish hope of returning to him.

I was just tired.

Two years in the rogue lands, starving, freezing, and kneeling in the snow to copy the Pack Laws had worn me down to nothing.

I had no strength left to fight.

Raiden eyed me suspiciously, staying close as if to ensure I wouldn’t cause trouble.

The blood draw, the tests, the needles piercing my skin—I didn’t even flinch.

I used to be terrified of pain. Five years ago, when the pack faced a deadly virus, Raiden brought me here for a check-up.

Back then, he stood beside me, his aura full of worry.

Now, his eyes were filled with nothing but cold scrutiny.

After the blood draw, I was so weak I could barely stand. My voice was hoarse as I said,

"Can I go now?"

The moment I spoke, my legs gave out, and I collapsed toward the floor.

Raiden’s eyes widened, and he instinctively reached out to catch me.

"Why are you moving around so much right after donating blood?!"

His tone softened slightly when he felt how frail my arms were. "Fine, I brought some soup. Stay in the hospital for a few days. Don’t cause any trouble."

For a moment, I thought I saw a glimpse of the Raiden I once knew.

But that brief warmth vanished instantly.

"Raiden, why are you still here? I want you to stay with me."

Giovanna’s sweet voice called out as she approached us.

Raiden immediately let go of me, putting distance between us.

He naturally took Giovanna’s arm, his aura full of concern.

"You should be resting. I was just making sure she donated the blood you need."

Giovanna clung to his arm, her eyes scanning me from head to toe, feigning surprise.

"Michaela, you look so… unwell. Did the rogue lands treat you poorly?"

Giovanna was dressed in an elegant gown, her scent radiating confidence.

I wore tattered clothes, my face gaunt and pale, a far cry from the Luna I once was.

The bitterness in my heart was overwhelming. I was Raiden’s mate, yet he and Giovanna looked like the perfect pair.

I forced a weak smile, my voice laced with sarcasm.

"You know exactly why I’m like this, don’t you?"

I knew all about the money she’d sent to the rogue lands to make my life there a living hell.

She stepped back, hiding behind Raiden and pretending to be hurt.

"Raiden, does Michaela blame me for something? Is she still angry about two years ago when I saved your mother from her?"

At the mention of two years ago, Raiden’s aura darkened. He shielded Giovanna, his voice low and furious.

"Michaela! If it weren’t for Giovanna, my mother would have died because of you two years ago! Two years of training, and you still haven’t learned your lesson?!"

"Let me make this clear! I’ll never forgive you for what you did two years ago. The only reason I keep you around is to watch you suffer!"

The hospital staff turned to stare at me, their eyes filled with disdain.

As Raiden stormed off, Giovanna’s smug scent followed.

I finally understood. Because of what happened two years ago, there was no going back for us.

The clinic was quiet in the way only a room with a dying woman in it can be quiet. I stood at the side of the treatment table with two fingers pressed to Mara Clark's wrist, counting. Her pulse was slow. Too slow. And under the slowness, something else — a small, wrong flutter that didn't belong in any heart I had ever treated. I looked at the tray on the steel cart beside me. Alivia had prepared it three hours ago. Neat vials. Neat labels. Her handwriting was always neat.

I never loved Ezequiel Mendez, and our union was born out of necessity, not choice. His father, the Alpha of the Silver Moon Pack, sought my father’s warriors, and my father craved the power that came with aligning our family with theirs. For twenty years, I never defied Ezequiel. When he criticized me for lacking the refinement of high-born she-wolves, I learned to play the piano, paint, and master the etiquette expected of a Luna. When he said I didn’t understand the pack’s politics or how to manage its affairs, I studied the pack laws until I could recite them by heart. I never pleaded for mercy when he turned against my family, and I didn’t object when he brought his so-called “Moonlight Princess,” Celine Hall, into our home. The only time I ever asked him for anything was for our daughter, Paislee. She had fallen in love with the same man as Milena, Celine’s daughter. The day I begged Ezequiel, he didn’t grant my request. I brought it up again on the day of the assassination attempt.
