Chapter 1

The Path Of The Devil Himself

The stench of stale beer, metallic blood, and cheap cigar smoke clung to the damp walls of The Iron Pit. Underground boxing rings never bothered with ventilation, only with violence.

I stood near the rusted chain-link fence, clutching a thermal bag tight against my chest like a shield. Inside were sterile gauze, antiseptic ointment, and a container of still-warm baked ziti. The roaring crowd pressed in around me—a sea of mafia soldiers, debt collectors, and low-level associates betting their week's earnings on blood.

In the center of the cage, Matteo stood victorious over a larger, unconscious man. The referee raised Matteo's taped, bloodied hand. The crowd erupted, slamming their fists against the wire mesh. Matteo, the youngest Capo of the Romano family, pounded his chest in response. Blood dripped from a nasty split above his left eyebrow, trailing down his cheek, but his grin was arrogant, feral, and utterly terrifying.

He wasn't the boy who used to share his strawberry gelatos with me on the sunlit steps of St. Jude's Orphanage anymore. The boy who promised to protect me from the neighborhood bullies had vanished. In his place stood a man trying too hard to be a ruthless mobster, desperate to prove to his older brother—the Don—that he was worthy of his rank.

Matteo hopped over the top rope, tossing his crimson-stained hand wraps into a dark corner. His inner circle of loyal soldiers—Rocco and Dante—immediately closed in, handing him a clean towel and a rocks glass filled with amber whiskey.

"Great right hook, boss. You broke his jaw in two places," Rocco laughed, clapping Matteo on the shoulder before his dark eyes shifted to the shadows where I stood waiting. A cruel smirk twisted Rocco's lips. "Oh, look. The Capo's little lapdog found her way into the kennel."

The laughter around Matteo erupted, harsh and mocking. The sound scraped against my nerves like sandpaper.

I stepped forward into the dim yellow light hanging from the exposed pipes. I wore a simple beige trench coat over a modest dress, feeling painfully out of place among the studded leather jackets, gang tattoos, and scantily clad ring girls.

"Matteo," I said, fighting to keep my voice steady despite the trembling in my fingers. I unzipped the thermal bag, ignoring the predatory stares of his men. "Your eyebrow needs stitches. I brought the first-aid kit, and some dinner. You haven't eaten since noon—"

Matteo’s victorious smile vanished instantly. He glanced at his snickering men, then back down at me. The need to maintain his alpha status in front of his ruthless crew visibly hardened his jaw. His eyes, once warm brown, turned to flat, cold stone.

"Did I call for a nurse?" Matteo sneered, his voice projecting across the suddenly quiet room.

I froze, the small bottle of antiseptic halfway out of the bag. "I just thought... I know you hate the greasy takeout they serve down here, so I—"

"You thought what?" He took a step toward me, towering over my smaller frame. The suffocating smell of his sweat, copper blood, and cheap whiskey washed over me. "You thought because I let you warm my bed a few times, you suddenly get to play the devoted wife? Here? In front of my men?"

My breath hitched. The cruelty in his words felt like a physical blow to my chest.

With a sudden, violent backhand, Matteo struck the thermal bag.

The force ripped it entirely from my hands. It hit the concrete floor with a sickening crash. The plastic container cracked wide open, spilling the rich red sauce and pasta across the filthy floor, mixing instantly with discarded cigarette butts and smeared blood. The glass vial of antiseptic shattered into a dozen jagged pieces, splashing clear liquid over my leather boots.

The room plunged into dead silence. Not a single man breathed.

I stared down at the ruined food. The ziti I had spent two hours making from his mother's old recipe.

"Clean up this pathetic mess and get out," Matteo ordered coldly, turning his broad back to me to grab his glass of whiskey from Dante. "You're a convenient plaything, Bella. Don't embarrass yourself by pretending to be anything more."

The words hit me harder than his fist ever could. The heat of humiliation flushed my cheeks, burning like fire, but the tears I expected didn't come. I had spent years walking on eggshells, compromising my dignity to stay under his protection in a world ruled by monsters. But looking at the shattered glass and ruined meal, something deep inside me—the dormant pride of a daughter raised on the fringes of the mafia—finally snapped.

I didn't look at the floor. I looked at the back of his head.

"Matteo."

He turned, an annoyed sigh escaping his lips. "What now, Bella? I told you to—"

Smack.

The sound of my palm striking his cheek echoed through the cavernous basement like a gunshot.

The air was sucked out of the room. Rocco and Dante instantly reached for the concealed weapons inside their jackets. The metallic click of safeties being switched off echoed in the dark.

But Matteo threw a hand up, stopping them. His face was turned sideways from the impact, a dark red mark rapidly blooming on his jawline. He looked genuinely stunned, as if a mouse had just bitten a lion.

I stood tall, my right hand stinging fiercely, my eyes completely dry and locked onto his.

"You are no longer the boy I knew," I said, my voice dropping to a frigid whisper that somehow carried across the silent, tension-filled room. "You're just a cheap thug trying to wear a man's suit."

Before he could recover from the shock or his men could react, I turned on my heel. I didn't run. I walked toward the heavy steel exit doors with measured, deliberate steps, keeping my spine completely straight.

Every hardened soldier instinctively stepped out of my way.

I pushed the heavy metal door open with both hands, stepping out into the freezing, torrential rain of the Chicago night.

The cold water soaked through my trench coat instantly, washing away the stench of the fight club, but it couldn't wash away the sudden, terrifying realization of what I had just done. I had publicly humiliated and struck a Capo. I had just severed my only tie and protection in this ruthless underworld. I was entirely alone.

I wrapped my arms around myself, shivering violently as I walked toward the empty, unlit alleyway ahead, desperate to disappear into the city.

I thought I had just survived the worst the night had to offer. But as shadows shifted at the end of the brick corridor and the headlights of three black, bulletproof SUVs suddenly blinded me, the true danger awoke.

The Devil's Handkerchief

The blinding headlights of the three black SUVs pinned me like a spotlight on a fleeing criminal.

Panic, cold and sharp, pierced through the numbness in my chest. I spun around, my wet leather boots slipping on the slick pavement, and bolted deeper into the pitch-black alleyway. My lungs burned with every jagged breath. The adrenaline that had carried me out of the fight club was rapidly evaporating, leaving behind a hollow, terrifying exhaustion.

I stumbled over a discarded wooden pallet, heavily scraping my knee through my dress, before crashing against a damp brick wall. The alley was a dead end. A chain-link fence topped with barbed wire loomed ten feet above me, completely unscalable in the torrential downpour.

I slid down the rough bricks until I hit the wet concrete. That was when the dam finally broke. The tears I had so proudly withheld in front of Matteo and his mocking soldiers poured down my face, mixing with the freezing Chicago rain. I pulled my knees to my chest, wrapping my arms around my legs, sobbing uncontrollably. My waterproof mascara bled into thick black rivers down my cheeks.

I was twenty-two, completely alone, and I had just publicly assaulted a made man in front of his entire crew. I had severed the only connection I had in this brutal underworld. I knew exactly how the mafia worked. Disrespect was paid for in blood.

The low, predatory purr of a massive V8 engine echoed off the narrow brick walls, vibrating in my chest.

I looked up, my vision badly blurred by rain and tears. The middle SUV had slowly crawled into the mouth of the alley, its high beams cutting through the heavy downpour like blades. It wasn't Matteo's flashy, obnoxious sports car. These were armored, government-grade vehicles. The kind meant to withstand a warzone.

Four men stepped out into the rain. They didn't wear the studded leather jackets or cheap gold chains of street-level soldiers. They wore immaculate black suits, their movements synchronized, efficient, and utterly silent. Elite enforcers.

One of them opened a large black umbrella, then stepped forward and pulled open the heavy rear passenger door of the center vehicle.

A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out into the night.

Even from twenty yards away, the sheer, crushing aura of his presence made the breath freeze in my throat. I pressed my back so hard against the brick wall I felt the jagged edges bite through my beige trench coat.

Lorenzo Romano.

The Don of the Romano family. Matteo’s older brother, and the single most feared man in Chicago.

Childhood memories flashed behind my eyes like a gruesome horror film. While Matteo had been loud, boisterous, and reckless, Lorenzo had always been a phantom—a silent, obsidian-eyed teenager who had grown into a ruthless king. I remembered being six years old, instinctively hiding behind Matteo’s back whenever Lorenzo entered a room, terrified of the boy whose hands were already stained with the family business. He was the executioner who had slaughtered three rival bosses before his twenty-first birthday, cementing his throne in blood.

And now, he was walking toward me.

His polished black oxfords made slow, deliberate splashes in the puddles. The enforcer holding the umbrella stayed exactly two paces behind him, keeping the torrential rain off the Don’s flawless, charcoal-grey bespoke suit.

I scrambled to my feet, my legs shaking so violently they could barely hold my weight. I wiped my ruined face with the back of my trembling hand, only managing to smear black makeup further across my pale skin. Did Matteo call him? Did the Capo complain to his terrifying brother that a girl had disrespected the family honor? Was I about to be buried under this very pavement?

Lorenzo stopped exactly three feet away from me.

Close up, the familial resemblance to Matteo was there in the sharp jawline and the dark, thick hair, but that was where the similarities violently ended. Lorenzo’s face was carved from glacial ice. His dark eyes—so deep they looked completely black in the shadows—swept over my soaked, shivering frame. He took in my wet hair, my ruined makeup, and the dirty mud staining the hem of my dress.

I squeezed my eyes shut tight, my heart hammering against my ribs. I braced for the cold, unyielding press of a gun barrel against my forehead. I had struck a Romano. Blood demanded blood.

"D-Don Lorenzo," I whispered, my teeth chattering uncontrollably from the cold and the terror. "I... I can explain. Matteo, he—"

"Silence."

His voice wasn't a shout. It was a low, resonant baritone that barely rose above the sound of the hitting rain, yet it commanded absolute, unquestionable obedience. It resonated deep in my bones.

I clamped my mouth shut instantly, a fresh, hot tear slipping down my freezing cheek. I held my breath. I waited for the end.

Instead of drawing a weapon, Lorenzo slowly reached inside the breast pocket of his suit coat. The movement was so smooth, so controlled, it was almost lethal in its grace.

He didn't pull out a pistol. He pulled out a square of dark silk.

He took one deliberate step closer, invading my personal space. The intoxicating, overwhelmingly masculine scent of expensive Cuban cigars, fresh rain, and cold cedarwood washed over me, instantly drowning out the metallic stench of the alley.

Lorenzo didn't hand the fabric to me. Slowly, he raised his large hand—a hand rumored to have choked the life out of betrayers without a second thought—and gently pressed the silk against my cheek.

I gasped, my eyes flying open in sheer shock.

His touch was agonizingly light. The knuckles brushing against my jaw were heavily calloused from years of violence, yet he wiped away the smeared mascara and the freezing rain from my skin with a tenderness that completely paralyzed my brain. His obsidian eyes never left mine, locking me in a dark, mesmerizing gaze that made the rest of the world vanish.

"Tears are a waste of water for a woman who just brought a Capo to his knees," Lorenzo murmured, his thumb brushing slowly against my cheekbone through the silk.

I stopped breathing. He knew. Of course he knew. The Don knew everything that happened in his city the absolute second it occurred.

"I... I hit him," I confessed, my voice barely a squeak.

"I know." The ghost of a smirk, dangerous and impossibly dark, tugged at the corner of Lorenzo's mouth. "It took you far longer to realize his worthlessness than I anticipated, piccola."

Little one.

The Italian endearment slipping from his lips sent a strange, forbidden shiver down my spine that had absolutely nothing to do with the cold.

He finally lowered his hand, pressing the warm, cedar-scented handkerchief into my frozen palm. His long fingers lingered over mine for a fraction of a second—a searing, possessive heat against my icy skin.

"Get in the car, Bella," he commanded softly.

I stared at the menacing armored vehicle idling in the rain, then looked back up at the most dangerous man I had ever known. "Where... where are we going?"

"You are done playing in the mud with boys," Lorenzo stated, his eyes dropping briefly to my trembling lips before rising back to meet my terrified gaze. "I am taking you home."

He turned his broad back to me, entirely expecting me to follow. And heaven help me, my feet moved on their own.

The Only Place I Was Truly Safe

The heavy, armored door of the SUV slammed shut, sealing me inside a soundproof vault of leather and shadows.

The engine roared to life, but inside the cabin, the silence was deafening. I sat pressed against the far door, clutching Lorenzo's silk handkerchief so tightly my knuckles turned white. My wet clothes clung to my freezing skin, making my teeth chatter in a frantic, uncontrollable rhythm.

Lorenzo didn’t look at me. He stared straight ahead out the reinforced window as the convoy sped through the rain-slicked, neon-lit streets of Chicago. Without a single word, he reached up, unbuttoned his bespoke suit jacket, and slid it off his broad shoulders. He leaned across the spacious backseat and draped the heavy, warm wool over my trembling frame.

The heat of his body was still trapped in the fabric. The scent of cedarwood, gunpowder, and Cuban cigar smoke enveloped me, instantly grounding my spiraling panic.

"Th-thank you," I stammered, pulling the lapels tighter around my neck. The jacket was massive, swallowing me whole.

He merely gave a slow, barely perceptible nod, his eyes remaining fixed on the street. He was intentionally giving me space. The terrifying, ruthless Don of the Romano family was deliberately keeping his distance to let me breathe. It was a stark, jarring contrast to Matteo, who had always crowded my space, always aggressively demanded my attention and validated his own ego through my submission.

Forty minutes later, the SUVs passed through a pair of massive, wrought-iron gates guarded by men holding tactical rifles in the pouring rain. We wound our way up a long, winding driveway lined with ancient oaks until the Romano Estate loomed into view. It was a sprawling, gothic stone mansion perched on a private hillside, heavily isolated from the rest of the world.

The lion’s den. The absolute epicenter of the mafia empire.

When the armored car rolled to a smooth stop under the grand portico, Lorenzo didn’t wait for his enforcers to open the doors. He stepped out into the rain, walked around the rear of the vehicle, and opened mine. He offered me his hand.

I hesitated for only a second before placing my small, icy fingers into his massive, scarred palm.

He led me through the towering double doors into the grand foyer. The mansion was breathtakingly opulent, but utterly silent and stark. It was entirely devoid of the flashy, chaotic party atmosphere Matteo always cultivated in his penthouses. Lorenzo dismissed a rushing maid and two heavily armed guards with nothing but a single, chilling glare.

He guided me down a long hallway and into a cavernous study. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the mahogany walls, and a massive executive desk sat in the center of the room. A fire was already roaring in the black marble hearth, casting dancing orange and gold shadows across the Persian rugs.

"Sit," he commanded, his voice a low, gravelly rumble. He gestured to a plush, dark leather chesterfield sofa positioned directly in front of the fire.

I obeyed instantly, sinking into the soft leather. I watched with wide, disbelieving eyes as the most dangerous man in the city walked into an adjoining washroom and returned a moment later carrying a white metal first-aid box.

The irony hit me like a physical blow to the stomach. Just hours ago, I had proudly carried a medical kit into a filthy basement to tend to a boy who ultimately humiliated me. Now, the Godfather of the entire mafia was bringing one to me.

Lorenzo didn't hand the box to me. Instead, he dropped to one knee on the rug, right in front of me.

My breath hitched in my throat. The image of this terrifying king kneeling before a broken girl short-circuited my brain. "Don Lorenzo, you... you don't have to do this. I can—"

"Quiet, piccola," he murmured softly, flipping open the metal latch of the kit.

He reached out and gently pushed aside the ruined, mud-stained hem of my beige trench coat and dress to expose the nasty, bloody scrape on my knee from when I had fallen in the alley. His touch was agonizingly slow. I looked down at his hands—the knuckles were bruised, the skin thick with calluses, a jagged white knife scar running across the back of his thumb. These were hands that ended lives. Hands that signed death warrants without a second of hesitation.

Yet, as he took a cotton swab soaked in antiseptic and dabbed it against my torn skin, his movements were incredibly delicate. They were almost clumsy in their extreme carefulness.

I hissed softly, my leg twitching instinctively as the alcohol stung the open wound.

Lorenzo froze instantly, his sharp jaw clenching tight. He leaned in closer and blew a gentle, cooling stream of air over the wound before resuming his work, his touch even lighter this time.

"Why didn't you punish me?" The dangerous question tumbled out of my mouth before my rational mind could stop it. The warmth of the roaring fire and the surreal, intimate nature of the moment had loosened my tongue.

Lorenzo paused, slowly peeling the paper backing off a large gauze bandage. He didn't look up. "For what?"

"For striking a Capo. For hitting your brother." I swallowed hard, my voice dropping to a terrified whisper. "In our world, that's an automatic death sentence. You know it is."

He finally lifted his head. The firelight caught the dark, lethal depths of his obsidian eyes. "Matteo deserved a bullet to the skull for how he spoke to you tonight. Your hand across his face was the greatest mercy he will ever receive in this life."

I stared at him, my heart pounding a frantic rhythm against my ribs. "But... but you’ve always looked at me with such coldness. Ever since we were kids. I thought you hated me. I was so terrified of you I used to literally hide behind Matteo just to avoid your gaze."

Lorenzo applied the bandage to my knee, his large fingers smoothing the adhesive edges with deliberate, agonizingly slow care. He stayed kneeling, his handsome, glacial face only inches from my bare legs.

"I know you were terrified of me," he said, his voice dropping into a raw, gravelly octave that vibrated through the quiet room and directly into my chest. "I am a monster, Bella. My hands have been soaked in blood since I was a teenager, all to keep this family on the throne. You were a single, untouched ray of sunlight in a very dark, violent world."

He slowly reached up, his calloused knuckles brushing against my jawline, gently tracing the path of a dried, blackened tear.

"I let you hide behind my reckless brother," Lorenzo confessed, the absolute authority in his eyes softening into a profound, restrained agony that took my breath away. "Because my hands were entirely too dirty to touch the only clean thing in my life. I stood in the shadows and watched him take what I could never allow myself to claim, just to keep you smiling."

The air completely left my lungs. The terrifying Don—the brutal boogeyman of my childhood—had been harboring a ghost in his heart all these years. It wasn't hatred that had kept him away from me. It was a desperate, agonizing, self-imposed restraint.

"But he broke the rules," Lorenzo continued, his thumb shifting to press lightly against my lower lip, parting them slightly. The brief gentleness vanished, instantly replaced by an overwhelming, possessive fire that made my core melt. "He threw away the priceless jewel I was willing to burn the entire world down to protect. He proved to me tonight that he cannot keep you safe."

He stood up smoothly, his massive frame towering over me, casting a long, dominant shadow that entirely eclipsed the firelight.

"I am done standing in the shadows, Bella," he declared, his voice a lethal, intoxicating promise. "You are done playing house with boys. From this night forward, you belong to the Don."

A deep, unfamiliar shiver of something far more potent than fear raced down my spine as I looked up at the man I had feared my entire life.
