Chapter 5

Melvin wiped snow off his mouth and stood, brushing himself off with that sick grin.

"Just a little 'hot compress.' Don't worry—you won't be cold much longer."

"I never did anything to you... why are you doing this to me?"

"No reason? You—"

Before he could finish, Sally and the others showed up.

The second Melvin spotted them, he dropped the villain act and clutched his stomach like the victim.

"Peyton... I was just trying to give you hot water, warm you up. Why'd you kick me?"

Sally rushed over, ready to defend him, but he stopped her quick—probably scared she'd notice the ugly bruise he'd carved into my ankle.

"It's fine, Sally. Don't blame her. She's delirious from the cold. She hates me—I deserve it."

"Melvin, you're too kind. But kindness on someone like Peyton? She'll never appreciate it. I'll make this right for you today!"

She stormed past him, heading straight for me.

Then she caught sight of my ankle and stopped cold.

"Your... Your foot... what happened? It was just bruised before. Now it's swollen and black—"

I pointed with the last of my strength. "It... It was him—"

He cut me off smooth. "She means I checked her earlier."

"I found her like this," he said, acting all serious. "Must've gotten worse when she slid down the slope."

Then he glanced around, voice slow and heavy. "One thing's clear—Peyton's too busted to hike out. We need to decide what happens next."

Sally's eyes went wide. "You mean..."

"Exactly. We can't haul her down. And if the rescue team finds her, everything we did today blows up. So... we end it here. Say she fell into a crevasse."

Melvin made it sound like some tragic kindness.

The others backed off, faces twisted with fear and doubt.

He doubled down. "Unless you're cool with losing everything—your jobs, your names—you'll stick to the plan."

That sealed it.

Wayne, still wavering, cracked. "We'll do what Melvin says. It's... for Peyton's own good."

Once he caved, the rest followed.

Melvin yanked a rope from his pack, tossed it to Wayne. "We all do it. Together. That way, no one bails."

The rope slipped around my neck—ice-cold.

They moved in, step by step, fear and cruelty tightening like a noose.

I couldn't breathe.

Then—WHUP-WHUP-WHUP. A chopper roared in, getting louder by the second.

A blinding searchlight ripped through the storm and locked on us.

A voice blasted from a loudspeaker, furious and godlike. "Stop!"

They froze.

Above, an orange rescue chopper hovered, blades tearing through the blizzard.

Faces went ghost-white. Nobody dared move.

Ninety-Nine Times, Then No More Novel Cover

This was the ninety-ninth time I caught my husband, Chase Vargas, with another woman in our five-year marriage. I stood in the hotel doorway, numb, tired of the cheap perfume and his cold, familiar eyes. But this time, his mistress, a blonde woman, hissed, "He told me all about you. The pathetic wife he's stuck with because of some business deal. He said he can't stand the sight of you." Her words, meant to hurt, were things I already knew, things Chase had made sure I understood. Still, hearing them from a stranger felt like a new humiliation. She lunged, scratching my face, drawing blood. The sting was a surprising jolt in my numb world. I wrote her a check, a routine part of this pathetic scene. Then my phone rang. It was Chase, calling from across the room. "What are you doing? Are you making a scene? Clean it up and get out. You're embarrassing." He thought I had orchestrated this, that I was the embarrassing one. The betrayal was casual, complete. "I'm tired, Chase," I said, the words finally coming from a place I thought had died. "I want a divorce." He laughed, a cruel sound. "A divorce? Elena, don't be ridiculous. You love me too much to ever leave me." I hung up. He then handed me a signed divorce agreement, telling me his true love, June, my adopted sister, was back. He wanted me to play the dutiful wife for her welcome-home concert. My heart, which I thought had turned to stone, felt a final, crushing blow. He wasn't divorcing me because I wanted it. He was divorcing me for her. I signed the papers. The ninety-ninth time was the last time he would do this to me.

She faked a suicide attempt and framed me. Alistair didn't even give me a chance to explain. "If she doesn't survive this, I will destroy you." He roared those words over the phone, openly declaring he would spend the night guarding her hospital bed. The very next day, Cordelia's secret son publicly attacked me and my child at the kindergarten gates, pointing at me and screaming that I was a thief who stole his father. For five years, I swallowed my pride and let his family strip me of my dignity, only to realize I was nothing but a temporary placeholder for a ghost. He actually thought he could just toss me the empty title of "wife" while giving his heart and his nights to another woman. I finally woke up from this pathetic joke. I didn't shed another tear or beg him to look at me. Instead, I calmly opened my tablet and searched for the most ruthless divorce lawyer in New York. The war was about to begin.
