Chapter 1

The full moon cast long shadows across the forest floor as I completed my midnight ritual, the ancient words of the Moonstone bloodline still echoing in my mind. The sacred altar had glowed silver under my touch, accepting another year of Raymond's wolf strength in exchange for the pack's continued prosperity—a sacrifice he never knew he was making.

I pulled my cloak tighter around my shoulders as I made my way back toward the pack house, my footsteps silent on the damp earth. Three years of betrayal had taught me to move like a ghost through my own territory, to be present yet invisible.

Something caught my attention—a weak whimper coming from the edge of our borders. I paused, my senses heightening as I scanned the darkness. There, beneath a gnarled oak tree, lay a tiny bundle of darkness.

I approached cautiously, my heart tightening as I realized what it was. A wolf pup, abandoned and barely breathing, his small body trembling with each shallow breath. His coat was unlike any I'd seen before—pure black with intricate silver markings that seemed to shimmer even in the moonlight.

"Such unusual markings," I whispered, kneeling beside him.

As my fingers touched his fur, something stirred within me—a recognition so deep it bypassed my conscious mind. My bloodline responded to his, a resonance I hadn't felt since...

Since before the betrayal.

I scooped him gently into my arms, feeling his tiny body fit perfectly against my chest. His eyes fluttered open briefly—silver, like mine when I accessed my Moonstone heritage.

"You're safe now," I murmured, cradling him closer as I hurried back to the pack house.

---

I spent the night nursing the pup in my private chambers, away from prying eyes. My fingers worked methodically, crushing healing herbs and mixing them with moonwater while my maternal instincts surged despite years of emotional numbness.

"Shadow," I whispered as his eyes opened fully for the first time, glowing silver in the moonlight streaming through my window. "Your name is Shadow."

He responded with a tiny whine, his small body curling trustingly against my palm. For the first time in years, I felt something other than cold calculation or dull pain.

The moment was shattered by the door to my private den swinging open without so much as a knock. Whitney stood in the doorway, her perfect features arranged in a mask of false concern that didn't reach her eyes.

"Oh, Luna Nora," she cooed, her voice dripping with honeyed poison. "I didn't mean to interrupt your... pet project."

She sauntered into the room uninvited, her eyes immediately locking on Shadow. "What a cute little stray you've found. How fitting—the barren Luna collecting another unwanted creature."

I remained silent, stroking Shadow's fur as he stirred uneasily in my lap.

"Raymond told me to come by and check on you," Whitney continued, running a hand through her glossy hair. "He's so concerned about your... mental state. Especially now that I'm carrying his heir."

My fingers froze momentarily before resuming their gentle rhythm. Shadow's eyes watched Whitney with unexpected intensity.

"It must be killing you," Whitney whispered, leaning closer as if sharing a confidence. "Knowing that while your mate bond may still exist, Raymond's heart—and his seed—belongs to me."

She placed a hand on her stomach in a theatrical gesture of motherhood. "The future Alpha of Silverpaw grows stronger every day inside me."

I felt the familiar burn of her mind-link opening, flooding my consciousness with explicit images of her and Raymond together. The mate bond amplified every sensation, every betrayal.

"Does it hurt?" she asked, watching my face with predatory satisfaction. "Good. It should."

Shadow growled softly, his tiny body tensing in my lap.

Whitney's eyes narrowed. "Your wolf is too weak to produce strong heirs, Nora. Everyone knows it. That's why Raymond came to me."

Something in her expression shifted from cruel amusement to genuine hatred. Her claws extended with a sickening sound.

"You should have stepped aside years ago," she hissed, lunging forward.

Pain seared across my cheek as her claws connected, drawing blood. Shadow erupted in a blur of motion I couldn't have anticipated from such a young pup.

He shifted—impossibly, his small body contorting into a wolf form twice his previous size, eyes blazing silver with ancient fury. His teeth sank into Whitney's arm before either of us could react.

Whitney screamed, blood flowing freely as she stumbled backward. "You little monster!"

The door crashed open again, and Raymond filled the frame, his Alpha aura pulsing with anger.

"What have you done?" he roared at me.

Before I could respond, he turned to Shadow, who stood protectively before me, still in his wolf form despite his youth.

"That creature attacked my Beta," Raymond snarled. "He'll be destroyed for this."

"Raymond," I began, but he cut me off with a single word.

"Submit."

His Alpha command hit me like a physical blow, forcing my head down as my body responded to his authority.

"You will accept Whitney's position in this pack," he continued, his voice cold with power. "And you will get rid of that mongrel before I have him killed."

Shadow's growl deepened, his silver eyes never leaving Raymond's face as if challenging the very foundation of his authority.
