Chapter 4

"Oh yeah, what's that?" I ask genuinely curious.

"We could make out." Harrison says with a completely straight face, and I can't stop the giggling that erupts from me.

"You are hilarious." I say right as the bell rings signaling the end of class.

"You got lucky." Harrison says giving me quick kiss on the cheek.

"I have study hall in the library next. Are you by any chance in there with me?" I ask hoping I don't have to go alone.

Harrison frowns at me. "I'm not, but I think Calvin is."

"Oh okay. I'm glad I won't be alone."

"Don't miss me to much babe." Harrison says with a wink and another quick kiss on the cheek.

"It will be hard, but I will try to survive without you." I say giving Harrison a kiss on the cheek. "See you later." I say waving as I turn and head towards the library building.

This is the first time all day I had to walk to a class by myself, and I am not going to lie I do not like it.

"Lilly, Lilly wait up." I hear someone calling my name when I'm about halfway up the hill to the library.

"Lilly." I hear it again and I finally see Calvin running towards me.

"Oh hey." I say waving at him.

"Damn girl you walk like you're being chased by a damn serial killer." Calvin says when he reaches me.

"I do not." I say laughing.

Calvin huffs. "Yes, you do. I have never seen anyone walk so fast to class in my life."

I can't help but laugh again. "Well, I'm sorry."

Calvin links his arm with mine. "Now that I can breathe again, let me escort you to the library."

"Well thank you." I say putting my hand on my chest. "I feel special."

Calvin laughs and we make our way up the rest of the hill making small talk along the way. The library has more people than I thought there would be. "I didn't realize so many people would be in study hall." I say to Calvin when we find an empty table.

"Yeah, they just kind of throw all the extra people in here. The kids that don't have anything better to do."

Calvin says taking the seat next to me.

"Oh, I see. So what do you do in here?"

"Umm, normally play on my phone. When I have homework, I do that, but that's pretty rare." Calvin says with a shrug of his shoulders.

Looking around the room, I see a lot of the kids from my other classes. Most of them ignore me, but some of the girls continue glaring at me the same way they have been doing all day. The bitchy part of me wants to ask what the fuck their problem is. The other part of me doesn't want to start some shit on my first day. I was lucky I found a group of guys to be friends with, the last thing I need is a year-long war with the girls of the school.

The library door swings open again, and I swear he is following me. "I didn't know Ryder was in this class." I say to Calvin who is playing on his phone.

Calvin looks up right as Ryder makes eye contact with me. "Oh yeah, your ass hole stepbrother is in this class."

"Thanks for the warning." I say bumping shoulders with Calvin.

"Anytime baby. Anytime." He says with a laugh, and I can't help but laugh too.

Ryder sits at a table diagonal from me and Calvin, and I can feel his intense glare on me. Why does he keep staring at me like that? It is really starting to creep me out. "Yo, why is he staring at you like that?" Calvin asks and I realize he is staring at Ryder.

I look at Calvin. "I don't know. He was staring at me and Harrison in my last class too. I thought it was just because Harrison was flirting with me, but apparently not."

Calvin nods his head slowly in understanding. "Come on." Calvin says bumping my arm with his.

"Where are we going?" I ask confused.

Calvin stands up and I follow him towards a row of books. He sits in the row with his back to the wall.

"Come sit with me." Calvin says spreading his legs and patting the floor in front of him.

"You want me to sit there?" I ask nodding towards the space between his legs on the floor.

A slow smile spreads across his lips and he nods. I stare at him for a minute before taking a seat in the space between his legs. "Lean back baby." Calvin says as he wraps his arms around my waist and gently pulls me backwards until I am leaning against his chest.

"You want to watch some videos of some past games? I can explain some of the rules of the game so you will know when to cheer for me."

"Who says I am going to have to know when to cheer for you?" I ask turning slightly to look at him.

Calvin narrows his eyes at me and gives me a flirty smile. "You are already wearing Logan's football hoody, so I know you are going to become our new number one fan."

I feel my cheeks heat, I had honestly forgotten I was wearing Logan's hoody. Calvin chuckles in my ear and I don't know what to say. Calvin takes my silence as agreement and decides to show me some of the game highlights from earlier in the season and last year. I didn't think I would like it but not going to lie football does look pretty interesting.

The class period flies by and I don't tell Calvin, but I am pretty excited to watch the guys play at their next game. When the bell rings signaling the end of class Calvin and I part ways. "Have fun at practice." I say as we wave bye to each other.

Before I can make my way out of the building I'm stopped by Ryder when he walks by whispering in my ear.

"Wow, you're really enjoying being passed around huh?"

His question catches me so off guard I am unable to come up with a response before he disappears down the hill towards the football field. What a dick. I am not being passed around by anyone. They are my friends. I continue grumbling to myself the whole way to the main classroom building where my World History class is.

"Hey sexy." Aaron says as we bump into each other in the hall.

"Hey." I say with a little less enthusiasm than I probably would have if it weren't for Ryder being a fucking dick.

"What's wrong?" Aaron asks looking at me with genuine concern.

"Ryder is just a dick."

Aaron nods his head. "What did he do now?"

I roll my eyes. "Nothing it's just something he said after he saw me and Calvin together in the last class."

"Oh, so he's jealous." Aaron says matter of fact.

A laugh erupts from me before I can stop it. "Jealous of what?"

Aaron shrugs. "You are sexy as hell and his girlfriend looks like a crack whore."

I laugh so hard I snort which makes several other kids in the hall look at me. Aaron just laughs. "See even your laugh is sexy."

I smack him on the arm as I try to reign in the laughter. "You are crazy. There was nothing sexy about me snorting."

Aaron smiles. "At least I got you laughing, now come on let's go to class."

Aaron holds the classroom door open for me and gently pushes me towards the back of the room. What is up with these guys and sitting in the back of the room? Are they allergic to the front row or what?

"Sit with me." Aaron says as he pulls up a chair by his table.

"Okay." I say and the teacher comes in the room.

Aaron leans in really close and whispers. "Mr. Wilkins is kind of a dick so if you need to say anything just write it down."

"Thanks for the tip." I whisper back and he winks at me.

The class passes by the slowest of all my classes and Aaron wasn't kidding. Mr. Wilkins really is a dick. Within the forty-five minute class period Mr. Wilkins sent two different kids to the office and gave one kid detention.

Wow. I thought Aaron was over exaggerating, but he was not. I have never been so happy to hear a class dismissal bell.

The steady beep of the heart monitor was the only sound in my mother's hospital room. I clutched her frail hand, watching her chest rise and fall with each labored breath. The kidney disease had ravaged her once-vibrant body, leaving behind this hollow shell connected to machines that cost more than our monthly mortgage. "Mrs. Miller needs the transplant soon," Dr. Chen had told me yesterday. "Her body is rejecting the dialysis now." I squeezed her hand tighter. "Hang in there, Mom. The donor match is coming soon." My phone buzzed against my hip. I almost ignored it—another call from the search team looking for Nikolai would only bring more disappointment—but something made me glance at the screen.
