Chapter 3

"Did you pack the extra propane?" I asked, standing on the front porch.

"Loaded in the back," Julian said. He slammed the trunk of the SUV shut. The metal thud echoed in the crisp morning air.

"And the heavy sleeping bags?" I asked.

"Got them," Liam yelled from the backseat. "Can we just go? Mia keeps kicking my bag."

"Tell her to move her stupid feet!" Mia shot back.

I walked down the concrete steps. I stopped right outside Liam's open window and reached in. I grabbed the collar of his fleece jacket and pulled the fabric higher around his neck.

"Keep this zipped," I instructed. "The wind off the lake gets brutal at night."

Liam grabbed my wrist and pushed it down. "I'm sixteen, Mom. I know how a zipper works. Stop treating me like a toddler."

I let my hand fall. "Just trying to keep you warm."

Julian walked around the side of the car. I held out a thick bundle of aluminum foil.

"Turkey and Swiss," I said. "Extra mustard. Just in case you get hungry before you reach the campsite."

Julian took the sandwiches. He leaned in and kissed my cheek. His lips felt cold against my skin.

"You're a lifesaver, Clara," he murmured. "Enjoy the peace and quiet. Get a massage."

"I have plenty planned," I replied.

Julian climbed into the driver's seat. He rolled down the window.

"Love you, Mom!" Mia called out, not looking up from her phone screen.

"See ya," Liam muttered.

"Have a great time," I said.

The engine roared to life. Julian threw the car into reverse and backed out of the driveway.

I stood perfectly still on the porch.

I watched the red taillights shrink down the suburban street. They turned right at the stop sign.

I started counting under my breath.

"One. Two. Three."

I reached ten.

I spun around, walked inside, and slammed the heavy oak door shut. The deadbolt slid into place with a sharp thwack.

I marched straight to the kitchen island and pulled my iPad from the hidden compartment under the drawer. My fingers flew across the screen, dialing the first number on my list.

"Arthur Gallagher," a gruff voice answered on the second ring.

"Mr. Gallagher, it's Clara Miller. We spoke last month at the country club."

"Ah, Mrs. Miller. A bit early for a Saturday call. What can I do for you?"

"I have a property to liquidate. Four bedrooms, three baths, prime school district. I need a cash buyer today."

"Today?" Arthur scoffed. "Real estate doesn't move in hours, Clara."

"It does when I'm offering it thirty percent below market value," I countered.

Silence stretched over the line.

"Thirty percent?" Arthur asked. His tone completely shifted. The skepticism vanished, replaced by sheer greed. "What's wrong with the foundation?"

"Nothing," I said. "The plumbing is new. The roof was replaced last spring. I just need the cash immediately. Can you be here by noon?"

"I'll bring my inspector and a cashier's check," Arthur promised.

I hung up. I pulled up my next contact.

"Rapid Transit Movers," a woman answered.

"I need a crew at my address in twenty minutes," I stated. "I am paying triple your weekend rate."

"We're fully booked, ma'am."

"Five thousand dollars cash, on top of the hourly fee."

"We'll be there in fifteen minutes."

I ended the call and opened my email, firing off a message to the overseas asset liquidator Sebastian had recommended.

Three hours later, Arthur Gallagher stood in the center of my living room. He held a clipboard against his chest.

"The crown molding is immaculate," he remarked, running a hand along the doorframe. "And the inspector found zero structural damage. Why are you practically giving this away?"

"My husband and I are eager for a change of scenery," I said. I slid the contract across the marble counter. "Sign on the dotted line, Arthur."

He picked up his pen. "No contingencies?"

"None. You take the keys on Monday."

Arthur signed his name three times. He reached into his leather briefcase and handed me a certified envelope.

"Pleasure doing business with you, Clara."

I walked him out to the front porch. The moving truck idled in the driveway. Two men were currently carrying Julian's favorite leather recliner out the front door.

Arthur paused at the top of the steps. He gestured toward the sprawling flowerbeds lining the walkway.

"You kept the garden beautifully," he said. "Those red roses are stunning. My wife loves gardening. She'll be thrilled."

"They require too much fertilizer," I replied.

A crimson blossom had snapped off its stem in the morning breeze. It lay perfectly intact on the concrete step.

I raised my right foot. I planted the sharp spike of my stiletto directly into the center of the bloom. I twisted my ankle hard.

The soft velvet petals shredded against the rough stone. Mud and crushed fiber smeared beneath my sole. A rush of pure, bloodthirsty adrenaline spiked through my chest. No pain. No grief. Just the intoxicating high of total destruction.

"Have a good weekend, Arthur," I said.

I left him staring at the ruined flower and walked back inside.

I bypassed the kitchen and headed straight to the master bedroom. The movers had already cleared out the heavy furniture. Only Julian's mahogany dresser remained.

I pulled open the top drawer and lifted out his heavy display case.

Inside sat his prized antique watch collection. A vintage Rolex. A Patek Philippe. An Omega he bought in Geneva. He polished them every Sunday.

I grabbed a black, heavy-duty trash bag from the floor. I snapped it open.

I didn't take the watches out individually. I simply turned the wooden case upside down.

Glass faces and metal bands clattered violently against the plastic. The Rolex bounced off the Omega.

"Take this bag to the dump," I told the mover walking past the door.

"The dump?" he asked, eyeing the bag.

"You heard me."

My phone buzzed against my hip.

I fished it out of my pocket. A text message from Sarah Jenkins, a mutual friend from the country club.

*Hey Clara. Did Liam mean to post this? I think he meant to restrict his account but it crossed to my feed by mistake.*

I tapped the attached image.

The screen loaded.

Liam stood in front of a sparkling blue lake. He was grinning ear to ear. His arms were wrapped tightly around the five-year-old boy. Mia stood next to them, throwing up a peace sign and sticking her tongue out.

In the background, Julian had his arm around the blonde woman. They were laughing.

Below the photo, Liam had typed a caption.

*The real perfect weekend. Finally away from the nagging.*

I stared at the screen. The corner of my mouth twitched upward. A laugh bubbled up from my throat, harsh and entirely devoid of humor.

I tapped the screen and saved the screenshot to my camera roll.

I opened my email application. I typed in the address for the Board of Directors at Apex Logistics.

Subject line: *Urgent - CFO Financial Misconduct.*

I attached the offshore bank records. I attached the Cayman wire transfers. I attached the property deed for the mistress's house.

Then, I attached Liam's blocked social media post.

*Julian Miller is funding a second family using embezzled corporate capital,* I typed in the body of the email. *He is a liability to your firm. See attached files for complete financial proof.*

My thumb hovered over the blue arrow.

I pressed send.
